Hey all, I'm MegaDeuce and this is my weight loss journal. After many years of being heavier than I want to be, I think including some other people who are on the same path would be a good idea!

About me: 34 M living in North Carolina. Recently moved to a new city and gained about 20 lbs in a year and a half. My current weight is 245 as of this morning.

How much weight do you want to lose?
My goal weight is 197, so I ultimately want to lose 48 lbs. However, my intermediate goal is to lose half of that, 24 lbs.
What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
I know it's harder to shed weight as you progress, so I'm splitting my ultimate goal into a series like this: 48 lbs = 24 + 12 + 6 + 3 + 1.5 + ...
I'd like to reach my first goal of losing 24 lbs in four months. Today is Dec 9th and my birthday is April 10, so if I can make significant progress by then I'll be pretty happy about it.
How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?
Portion control and increasing my activity level. This is a long term project, so any changes I make need to be something that I can live with. I've tried extreme calorie cutting but it's not sustainable. To log portions and exercise I have a daily entry paper log book. I'm using a scale to track the portion sizes in grams, as well as any caloric drinks I take in. I'm also logging any exercise. I'm setting daily goals too.
Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
My girlfriend and hopefully inspiration from this forum :)
How realistic is your goal?
I think my goal is completely realistic. Ultimately it's a question of determination and self-discipline.
When will you start?
Today!
Dec 9, 2019
Weight: 245lbs / 112 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 12 oz caloric drink
Will update at the end of the day.

Hi Mega and welcome to the diaries! 24 pounds in 4 months sounds reasonable to me and won´t require extreme calorie cutting. Best of luck!

Hi MegaDeuce,

I'm just new here too (started a couple of weeks ago) I've found this forum to be really great for all the extra support to stay on track with goals.
Looking forward to hearing your progress!

Great to be starting a whole new diary - I'm really looking forward to reading your tale of brilliant progress. I think you've got this in the bag, actually. :)

Thanks aiminglow! Just got your username lol

Update for today:

Dec 9, 2019
Weight: 245lbs / 112 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 12 oz caloric drink
Food: 1147g
"Caloric Drinks": 16 oz
Exercise: 32 mins walking
Feeling good about staying in my goal for food today (my average intake is 1300g). Went a little over with the drinks but that's OK. Looks like there isn't a way to edit posts(??) So will update my progress tomorrow night :)

Hi, MegaDeuce & welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have a really sound & doable plan & having support sure does help. Welcome to our part of the world :)

There's a 15-minute edit window; after that only mods have The Power. Something to do with spam.

Thanks for the welcome, Cate :) And thanks for the explanation LaMaria. If we can't edit past 15 mins then I'll make a "goal" post in the morning and a result post in the evening, since that's when I stop eating for the day lol.

Weight & Goal for today:

Dec 10, 2019
Weight: 243lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 12 oz caloric drink / 30 minute walking

I did lose two pounds since yesterday but I'm well aware that the body naturally fluctuates by up to a couple pounds so I won't get too excited. Also, including an exercise goal since I didn't put one in yesterday.

Hey Mega, good to see you have a diary now, and it looks like you are off to a great start!
After many years of being heavier than I want to be, I think including some other people who are on the same path would be a good idea!
It is, or it has been for me anyway, this is a anonymous place where you will find a lot of friendly helpful folks with the same or similar problems to yours. You can pretty much say or ask anything and find people willing to help or discuss it with you.

I am looking forward to reading about your success.

Thanks Cate! And thanks AlligatorRob. I feel like it's going to give me a better sense of accountability. I think I've always had the *tools* to lose the weight, just not the self-discipline.

Update for today:

Dec 10, 2019
Weight: 243lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 12 oz caloric drink / 30 minute walking
Food: 927 g
Caloric drink: 24 oz
Excercise: 10 minutes walking.

Feel a little guilty about not getting the full 30 minutes in. I timed what I thought was a pretty good walk and it ended up being 10 minutes. (Yesterday was a combination of two 15 min walks) Also-Had an extra soda with lunch which bumped me up to 24 oz. I feel like that's OK occasionally as long as I don't regularly go over.

Food intake wasn't intentionally low, I just didn't have my usual bowl of cereal for breakfast, and liquidy foods tend to add more weight to my totals.

Do you track your calories and nutrient intake as well or do you just track the weight of the food?
Sounds like you've had a successful second day.
I like having walking as part of my routine as well.

Hey Liza :) no I'm not tracking calories or nutrients. I've done calorie counting in the past, but it's (obviously) a lot more involved. Doing calculations, looking at packaging, warming up google every time I eat something unpackaged. My working theory is that weight tracking can help with portion control, and that I'll be more likely to stick to something that's a little simpler :) At some point I might switch over to a weight-watchers style point system, which might be more accurate.

Goal & Weight for this morning:

Dec 11, 2019
Weight: 243lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 12 oz caloric drink / 20 minute walking

Dropping the "walking" goal down to 20 mins for the moment, going from 0 to 30 minutes might be too much of a jump.

I'm very curious to see how you get on with your diet-by-weight. I guess I'd expect volume units would correlate better with satiety but then things measured in cups can be so different depending on how finely they're chopped.

That makes sense--good to keep things simple! I'm using a pretty good app that is good for calculating everything for me but it's still a bit of a pain trying to measure everything all the time!

I like that you adjusted your walking goal to something more realistic for you. It's good to be open to adjustments!

Thanks, Liza! What I like best about it is that there's (almost) no estimation involved. I have a kitchen scale and I just balance my plate on top of that when I serve myself anything. Back when I was calorie counting I used the fudge factor to cheat a bit. You know the whole "Oh well maybe I'm at 1500 right now but it could be 1400 so I can probably get away with this extra cookie"

Looked up my BMI as a percentile today... 74th percentile for Americans, which means if I meet four random people, three of them will have a smaller BMI than me. (To get up to the top 1% you need a BMI above 50.6 if I remember correctly).

Update for today:

Dec 11, 2019
Weight: 243lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 12 oz caloric drink / 20 minute walking
Food: 1232 g
Caloric Drink: 12 oz
Exercise: 18 min walking

Feeling pretty good about today :) Had a smaller portion than I normally would with my dinner (about 75% as much), and I managed to get an almost-20 minute walk in despite realizing at the last minute I hadn't done any walking for today. Pretty cold outside, I think I'm just now starting to thaw out from that one.

Wasn't going to do it, then I thought: "how can I justify *not* taking a 20 minute walk when I post in my journal thread?"

Great work! And an excellent reason to keep an online diary :) Did your dinner taste good and satisfy you?
