And as much sugar as freshly pressed orange juice.
Oh lord, I believe it. I skipped the OJ this morning at brunch!

That made me laugh about it being too sad. That's sometimes how I feel about my sad size of desserts but it is starting to feel more normal now.
Lol yeah definitely sad having slightly smaller portions, but I do think over time I'll adjust to it. I think gaining weight what I thought of as a "normal" portion size crept up and I didn't even notice. I also have a serious habit of going back for seconds!

Oh, heavens! o_O Too blinking true!
I remember once being taken out for dinner and the gentleman opposite was quite startled that I was up for a third course - or more garlic bread, or whatever it was - I just remember his surprised but still gracious and hostly face, signalling to the waiter that more food would be welcome. That was an early hint that my appetite had shifted away from what most people consider normal. And seconds! Yes, that's me, or was me... I'm gradually recalibrating. :)

Yes me too! Also for me it was about metabolism changing. There was a time in my life when I could eat anything and everything and remained thin, so that was a big change for me over the past few years.

@aiminglow --love that story with you and the gentleman out for dinner!

I never had that date experience but it's been said about me that I never let free food pass me by! Yeah it's so easy to let your appetite slowwwly creep up. The trick is getting it to creep back down and stay there >.<

Update for today:

Dec 14, 2019
Weight: 242 lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 16 oz caloric drink / 20 mins walking
Food: 1090g*
Drink: 14 oz
Exercise: 20 mins walking

*includes an estimate from brunch this morning

Feeling pretty OK about today, breaking out of the 240s feels just around the corner! Also I kept the food and drink under the weight goal, although it was probably richer food than I normally eat. (Unfortunately in my system the type of food is not accounted for, which of course is the primary drawback of going by food weight alone.) However, when I did my walk tonight I felt more energetic than usual, which makes me think I should keep it up!

Feeling more energetic is a major plus! I was a kid in the 80s and around where we lived standard soda glasses were 0.15 l...

150 mL?

That's a sip and a half!

Weight/ Goal for today:

Dec 15, 2019
Weight: 242 lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 16 oz caloric drink / 24 mins walking

It was a little too easy to hit the 20 minute mark yesterday so I'm boosting the goal up a bit :)

You are doing very well, good for you.

I understand the portion problem, left to my instincts mine are always way too big. I am sure I have shocked a few folks along the way, but have been mostly oblivious to that.
Weight: 242 lbs
You are pretty close to me, I am currently at 239, but am new to the 230s. You might join us (mostly me at the moment) in the 200 to 250 lb club, we could use the company https://weight-loss.fitness.com/threads/club-200-250.113321/page-2 and its a good place to work on getting out of. These are clubs where folks are not encouraged to overstay their welcomes!

Mega,

When I first started I also struggled with knowing when and how often to weigh. I settled on claiming an "official" weekly weight, I get there by weighing first thing in the morning Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and then post the average as "official" on Wednesday. It helps with the normal ups and downs. For a while I tried weighing myself several times a day, that was informative, I think I learned a lot about how weight fluctuates and what effects it. Don't do that so much anymore, and having the official weight keeps me from fretting over the occasional up bounces I see when I do weigh more often.

The more important thing is not when or how often you weigh, if you stick with your plan you will lose fat every day. That is absolute and what really matters. Your water content varies and that makes your weight vary, and its not so important.

You are doing well, and getting the hang of things, keep at it.

Rob's averaging plan is a good one - I'm not so organised, myself, but it really makes sense to take a longer-range view rather than to focus on single scale-checks.

Thanks for the encouragement, LaMaria and Cate! And thank you for your post, Rob. Averaging out a few weights does sound like a good plan. I'm going to stick to daily weigh-ins for at least another week, just to gain confidence that my plan is really working. After that I might well adapt some sort of averaging scheme for recording weights.

I have many old excel charts showing daily weight data from when I've tried losing weight in the past, so intellectually I understand how to look at the long term and ignore fluctuations. But emotionally it's still a little jarring to see a number go up (or not go down) on a daily weigh-in. In the past that's led to a "well this isn't working" approach that leads to going off a diet.

Honestly what's helping me most with that right now is all the support I'm seeing on this forum! Posting my progress and seeing the page numbers in this thread tick up really make it feel like this is a long-term project and not some "diet of the month" thing.

That being said... here's tonight's update:

Dec 15, 2019
Weight: 242 lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 16 oz caloric drink / 24 mins walking
Food: 963g
Drink: 22 oz
Exercise: 30 mins walking

Like yesterday, the food was a little richer than normal. But I came under my 1200g goal so I can't be too hard on myself. The drink goal was totally blown, however. This time of year my weakness is egg nog!

Again, thanks to everyone for your support and kind words :)

Yes I can relate to that!

That's so great. I like the idea of this being a long-term project as well.

I find the day today fluctuations do my head in. I'm glad you are finding the forum support encouraging. This just might be what you need to help you stick with it long-term & that would be a good thing.

I can see that, it was for me at first also. Then I tried to think of it as a kind of science thing, what was the effect of time of day, what I had drunk or eaten, what I was wearing. I found things like I can lose as much as 2 lbs just sleeping overnight, I almost always weigh the least in the morning. My clothing weighs more than I thought, the sandals I have on right now weigh a little more than a pound. I also found that I tended to weigh a little more on days I drank a lot of water, clearly water weight not fat. We all have to find what works best for us and do it, you are feeling your way along and will find what makes you feel best, I am sure.

Absolutely true for me as well.

Keep up your good work.

I'm scared to go a whole week without weighing in. I can deal with a daily fluctuation but if I weigh myself after a week and don't see any progress I'd be super discouraged.

Thanks Rob- I've noticed too that I lose a couple of pounds over night, so I always weigh myself in the morning before eating anything to get the "true" value. Congrats on breaking through to the 230s, btw!

Weight/ Goal for today:

Dec 16, 2019
Weight: 242 lbs / 110 kg
Goal: 1200g food / 20 oz "caloric drink" / 25 mins walking

The number hasn't budged in a few days, but I'm 3 lbs down from where I was last week! Feeling good about that! Bumped the drink up to 20 oz, because I had a 10 oz glass of milk already and it makes me too thirsty to put it any lower. Will readjust for tomorrow :)

Goal: 1200g food / 20 oz "caloric drink" / 25 mins walking
Food: 906g

Hit all my goals and feeling good! Now to decide if I'm weighing in tomorrow or if I'll wait until Monday and switch to a weekly weigh-in... hmm...
