Marsia's Diary

I am pretty shocked that my husband J is actually doing what I asked. I guess it's the way I asked, and he realized he does need to start taking care of himself. I am really relieved, because I feel like we turned around his workaholism to some degree before he completely buried himself in it.
I am so glad your friendly "intervention" worked, Marsia, xo

Thanks, Cate, me too!

Thanks Marsia yes they did go cycling but I think I might be better lol as son will be road racing . I will hopefully get out with him soon .
Good thinks going better for you x

Well, I have been listening to lots of videos by Dr. Berg, a proponent of intermittent fasting and low carb diets. He has a quiz to see what body type you are in his system, and I am the insulin resistant type he calls the Pancreas Body Type. "This type has a series of symptoms: belly fat, nervousness, poor memory, craving sweets, being tired after eating, being sluggish throughout the day, achy joints, worsening of vision, and difficulty to go on a long period of time without the need for a snack." This is uncanny how many of my symptoms it nails. So the cure is a low carb diet with lots of leafy greens for potasium and intermittent fasting, which has been hard to do because I feel shaky if I try to fast. I bought one of his books on the body types, too, and what each type particularly needs.

So I loaded up on healthy fat yesterday (ate a big bowl of Thai coconut chicken soup I made in the new crock pot gadget which I love) and skipped breakfast this morning. I just ate a big lunch (kimchee, tons of zucchini, a salmon patty, and a kale shake) and I am fine so far. The hard part is going to be no snacking between meals. I think I'll grab some nuts so they count as part of this meal because I adore nuts and know I am going to want to snack on them later.

Took my mom to the doctor for about the 3rd time in 3 weeks because her blood pressure is so high. He said that if her blood pressure doesn't come down, next time he's sending her to a cardiologist. So I am making most of her food for her because she has zero understanding of nutrition and if she did understand it, she is so forgetful, it would go in one ear and out the other. We just came from the grocery store where I picked her out salad things for when she wants snacks, and I took her for her favorite walk on the cliffs over the ocean. The sun even came out, and I ran up and down the steps to the ocean every time we got near stairs so I got a little exercise.

Cate, hope you are having a lovely time with your sister! Hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

That´s a lot on your plate. I hope it helps.

Health issues with parents are super stressful. Pamper yourself a bit and don't forget to unwind and relax. That is super interesting about the body types. I kinda sound like you ...

Thanks LaMa and Jenni! I am feeling a bit stressed about my mom. She has never taken care of her health, so it actually is a relief that she will just let me make extra food so she eats well. She is diabetic and allergic to all the dust in her house, but it is such a mess in there, it is super hard to clean. So I am going up to her house to vacuum so she doesn't drink liqueur to try to combat the allergies instead of get the house clean because she does not remember that having liqueur is very bad for her diabetes. She is also depressed and wants me to entertain her more, but we don't get along that great, so I am hoping to take her for a walk every day instead of try to sit around and entertain her (which is what she really wants me to do).

I think one of my sources of stress is that I don't do much stuff for myself because there is just so much to do without adding taking care of me to the list. But I am going to have to do a better job at that because I have been getting so scattered and not able to get anything done. I just feel like I am keeping the house and property sort of kept up and keeping everyone fed and dishes done, and patent stuff done, but not much else. It's like I don't have any traction.

Actually one of the body types Dr. Berg talks about is a stress type, and I identify with that, as well. His test is interesting if you would like to do it for fun, Jenni Body Type Quiz .

My kid is home from school with a little cold/flu today, so we are just going to hang out and relax.

Yup, I'm the pancreas body type too!

The walk with your mom sounds like a good idea. I really dislike having to entertain others, even those I get along with!

Jenni, thank you so much for saying that! I live with the world's biggest extrovert who Loves entertaining, so I often wonder if it is abnormal not to like to. I love doing things with people, but sitting around talking about the things I have done or they have done, I just don't get into it very often, especially if I have to clean the whole house to do it! I had a eureka moment and told my mom how J (hubby) can not work with people talking in the next room, so I'll invite her over for dinner and things like that when he is not working. This is actually true, and this means J and my daughter can entertain, and I can cook, which I love to do. We used to do that more, but my mom likes everything in serving dishes, which means a ton more dishes, so I'll tell her she can have dinner without all the extra dishes for me to wash.

Wow, sorry about you also being the pancreas type. Insulin resistance is so hard! But I am determined to get back to healthy so I can get out of this constant state of fighting to lose every single pound! This is my second day of intermittent fasting, and though I am moody and tired, underneath that I am energized. So I think this could work for me. What do you think of Dr. Berg's premise that it isn't being overweight that is the problem, overweight is a symptom of screwed up hormones from commercial produce and other foods, stress, and too much sugar messing with hormonal balance?

I have a little of whatever bug my kid has, so we are watching BBC shows on art and sitting around the wood stove being warm and cozy. It's very nice to sit around and relax! Just had one of two meals for the day, and it was a massive 700 calorie meal. I feel so stuffed and happy!

Hi Marsia,

Wow, you do so much for your mom, you are a saint! About the intermittent fasting, I read a blogger called James Clear. He said something about, once you fast for a certain amount of time, you burn off more calories than if you spread the same amount of food more evenly. So he doesn't eat after dinner, and skips breakfast. That makes for enough time between dinner and lunch the next day to dip into the fasting phase. I don't know if that's what your plan is, just thought I'd relay what he said.

Hi Jack! What James Clear is talking about is what I am trying. The advice I read was to work up to eating in a 6 hour window if you are male, and an 8 hour window if you are female. So I am doing the 8 hour window and combining breakfast and lunch. Third day so far, and though I am at the same weight, my legs are a little thinner - pants are a bit loose in the legs. Cate is a big intermittent faster, and inspired me to try it.

I am the only child in my family, so it is up to me to take care of my mom. It's really nice of you to say that I am saint-like, but really she did all this stuff for all our relatives, so it's my turn now. Hopefully there will be someone there when I'm old and batty and need a little help!

Today I made the hugest most wonderful salad with everything imaginable in it and home made dressing. Then I made some delicious roasted red pepper soup for sort of a second lunch, and may have a little snack before bed. I made a new recipe - chia pudding with monk fruit sugar (which is my favorite zero calorie sugar so far) which I can take out of the fridge for brunch tomorrow. Sounds strange, but I hope it's good, because with eating no flours or starches for thickeners, it's hard to have things like puddings.

Not much going on today. I have the flu a little, so just cooked and took naps. I remember laughing in my sleep, so had a nice time in my dreams, I think!

Roasted red pepper soup sounds delicious! Other than that: just because other people have been known to self-sacrifice in the past it doesn´t mean you don´t deserve mad recognition for what you´re doing. And you really are going above and beyond.

Marsia reading about your body type I am pretty sure I am the exact same . Sluggish after sugar , vision and all the rest . My belly fat is huge and feels like it appears overnight lol . I will do that quiz . Thank you

You need time out for yourself . I'm really busy too but I don't have anyone to care for other than the immediate family but I still get overwhelmed . Took a night off everything last night .
I love the sound of your chicken soup . Sounds so lovely .
Sounds like a lot of us here need more self care

Hi LaMa! Thanks for all the acknowledgement! I didn't really think about things like you are pointing out. Maybe that's why I am not getting much done!

Petal, I wonder if we are the same type. It seems like people who exercise and eat pretty well, but have a really hard time losing weight like us might all be the same or similar types. Glad you took a night off, it sounds like you really needed it! It is actually feeling pretty good to take care of myself by learning to do intermittent fasting and to eat really healthy food. It feels cleansing, and hopefully at the end of this, I'll have energy again like I used to, or at least almost like I used to!

Well, it's late here and I think it's nighty-night time for me!

Well guess what I'm the pancreas body type too . It's no surprise. Marsia I'm not going to buy all the stuff he promotes though so I'm just going to follow my husbands diabetic diet plan I think !
