Dude, listen to yourself. You ran a 5:15 marathon and are wondering if pot has a negative effect on your running performance? 5:15 sucks. Take your goals into consideration, if you want to run marathons well, pot isn't helping. Also, this is a BODYBUILDING FORUM, NOT A RUNNERS FORUM!

Before you start making a big mistake with your whole 14 posts, and gettin rude with people here I'll just stop you now. His question had to do with does smoking marajuana have a negative effect on his recovery time... I think that fits the "bodybuilding" SECTION of the FITNESS FORUM very well. Recovery has everything to do with bodybuilding. His concerns shifted to running as well which is allowed in a single thread. Because therefore he will not need to make a new thread. Stop with you negativity of telling people that "5:15 sucks blah blah."

Oh and to back up SMax here's a picture for you....

Keep the ignorance out, or don't post.
BTW this thread is very informative.

I just smoked 5 joints yesterday at a party. w00t.

I haven't ever used marijuana, but my mother is one of the top medical consultants in my state. One of the facilities she is consulting for states that marijuana affects neurological functions almost exclusively - thus the elated feeling and increased metabolism. Because of this, she says that marijuana would have very little impact on helping out your muscles relax after a workout. Really, it wouldn't do a whole lot any other time either.

Marijuana is quite a bit cleaner than tobacco, when grown properly. Although many studies show that marijuana's effects on a person are not hugely detrimental in a short period of time, these studies are all conducted with the most pure forms of marijuana that can be obtained. Many research facilities maintain a small stock of the plant for such purposes. The point is there's no telling how clean your supply is, and therefore, you can't take such studies as a hard truth. Just something to keep in mind, because your pot might not be as clean as you think.

okay, couple things first. yes, i did a search, but no current threads answered my question. also, i am not interested in people's opinions on whether marijuana is morally okay or not. i'm also not interested in people's subjective opinions on whether or not marijuana is "bad" for you physically or mentally. everyone has an opinion and opinions are usually strong when dealing with subjects such as this. i don't care about opinions, i'm looking for hard facts and personal experiences.

so here's the deal. i've used marijuana regularly for about 10 years now. i work out 5 days a week, which involves running roughly 60 miles (per week) and intense circuit training and weight lifting. i ran my first marathon last june (grandma's) with a pretty decent time of 5:15.

this bring me to my actual question. i occasionally smoke marijuana after working out and/or running. (never before or during.) does anyone know if doing so decreases muscle recovery time? it feels as if my muscles become more relaxed much quicker than if i don't get high after. or is there a negative effect in that it lowers your metabolism therefore making it so you burn less calories after working out than you would normally?

are there any informed people out there with insight into this?

It all comes down to how much weed you have after you workout. You have to answer your own question based on the research, what the health people say, etc. You are already aware of the affects of weed based on research. Too much of anything is not good for you or any of us, and as long as you can handle yourself and do not do too much, you should be okay. Same goes with working out... and maybe instead of doing weed after you workout, you could do it on days you do not workout (just a suggestion). Make sure you do drink water after your workout though to fresh up your system.

Keep in mind everybody that there are tons of different research and some prove to be right and some prove to be wrong; however, everybody is different and we all react, act, and things affect us in different ways. Drunkeness or being high or tobacco smoking for example - it can kill one person or give health problems to one person, but not to another. Even somebody who has never smoked or drink their whole life, can die at any age. I don't smoke, I have maybe smoked weed only a couple times in my life (had a couple of puffs just to feel mellow), and I don't drink alcohol; however, this does not mean I will live until I am 100 or not not have any health problems.

Alright I dont know if anyone else has posted this I didnt want to read through 3 pages of post so Ill throw in my 2 cents. I do smoke herb, not near as much as I use to maybe 1 or 2 times a week. Marijuana helps you with deep breathing, increases your appetite, and helps to relax muscles. If you want to enjoy marijuana and not worry about lung health consider eating it, its a different high a huge body buzz. You could make brownies or any number of food with it or just eat the buds, be sure to eat some fat and warm the buds in the microwave for like 10 seconds. You could also consider buying a keef grinder and getting empty gel caps and putting the keef inside. I hope I helped and didnt restate old info.

I skimmed this thread, so if someone already stated what I'm about to state, I apologize. Smoking, whether that be cigarettes or marijuana, causes vasoconstriction. The vessels tighten, or constrict, reducing blood flow. You are reducing the perfusion of blood to your brain, muscles and tissues each time you light up. Doing this directly after a workout is a very bad idea, because you want healthy circulation and oxygenation to your muscles so they can grow. Hope this helps.

actually, no, it doesn't help. as i've stated previously, i was curious about the effects of MARIJUANA on reovery, not smoking.

Also, this is the bodybuilding section, not the runners section

yes, my question was about the effects of the active ingredient in marijuana as it relates to muscle recovery, not running.

...and i thought 5:15 was a very good time for a first marathon.

smoking weed makes me really weak and my head spin in the morning, i think weed is 100% bad if you are trying to build your body or to do and kind of training. Well, thats just me

Aside from this thread being completely retarded, does everyone here know that smoking weed is illegal? Just thought i'd throw that out there.

Its not illegal everywhere either, and until the 1930's or 1940's, it was totally legal in the USA too.

But, this thread isn't about the legality of weed, or whether alcohol or cigarettes are worse than weed but somehow remain legal as long as you are 'of legal age'.

For the record, many articles and videos exist with people like Arnold and Lou puffing on joints after training. For the relaxation, for the mild pain reducing effects, and for the munchies...so they could pound down the 6,000+ calories they needed to stay HUGE.

I’m surprised no one has brought up vaporizers. I “smoke” out of one once or twice a week, and I have to say that it’s not only hella better for you, but also gives you a more efficient (use lose less for the same, important to poor college students such as myself :) ) high as well. They're a bit more expensive then your average piece, but well worth it.

Again we have the wonderful responding to threads months old. There are plenty of new threads.

Why is it suddenly that when people get on a forum they revert to some sort of elementary level writing style?

p.s. Yes there are chemicals in weed. You think they stick it in the earth and just water it and it grows?
