Making Monty

I am sick of this general feeling of being unhealthy. My body aches, I'm tired, and I find myself always "thinking" about that feeling of being whole and healthy. So I am going to change that. With that comes losing some weight and exercising more. I've tried losing weight before only to become bored with it, and I end up stalling. This time I want to make the process of leading a healthy lifestyle enjoyable...and truly enjoying to process and the benefits.

It sounds lame but I want to be one of those people who does yoga in the morning, goes on long runs, and leads a more natural, healthy lifestyle. The thing is, I always find myself thinking about being that kind of person but as of now...I haven't.

There isn't a lot of weight to lose...maybe twenty or so pounds. I'd be fine with that. I just want to FEEL better. I owe it to myself to do this. No concrete plan is in place...it's more like a thinking thing. Every decision I make throughout the day regarding my health and well being...I want to consciously think and make the right ones.

Maybe I'm shooting in the dark here but it's worth a try.

So Day 1 of my endeavor towards ultimate health. I found these questions in the newcomers section and thought they'd be a good start.

1. Answer these questions before starting your diary.

-- How much weight do you want to lose?
About 20 pounds, give or take

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
I don't really have a strict timeframe, but by the time I come home from school for the summer would be nice, so about 4 months, putting me at the beginning of May.

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?
Exercise and diet...and maybe slowing my pace down a little bit. I want to enjoy life.

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
I'm going to be honest with myself here...NOT my friends. They are a conglomerate of bad habits and they just encourage them in everyone else. So while I'm at school, it's mostly going to be up to me.

-- How realistic is your goal?
Pretty realistic I think.

-- When will you start?
Last night!

1. What is your current height and weight?
I am a shrimp...5'1 and 134 pounds.

2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
114 sounds nice. I think it's be good for me.

3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
Hopefully having reached my goal!

4. Why do you want to lose weight?
Because I'm trying to improve my health and with that comes a bit of weight loss. Plus I want to look better and feel good about myself.

5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
Nope.

6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
Rushing. School keeps me very busy and sometimes I get lazy with my health.

7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
Not one that's an emergency...yet. But my weight has been yoyo-ing since I've been in college from losing 6 pounds to gaining 5...so that's not great.

8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
Just the way I carry out my day and spread my work out. I just need to see the bigger picture.

9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
Two summers ago I was 145 and lost about 15 pounds. I've kept most of that off, but I was really determined that summer. I ate really well and exercised a lot.

10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
I didn't lose as much as I would have liked because I got to a plateau and gave up.

11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?
I'm not sure if anything hasn't worked.

12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?
Yes, I've done that before. It works.

13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
Unfortunately no. I'm usually a slave to the cafeteria at school.

14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
Once every other week or so we get sushi.

15. What are your three favorite foods?
Sushi, Potatoes, and Soup.

16. What are your three favorite restaurants?
Any good sushi place, and many Mexican places.

17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
Think about what I'm eating, eat slower, eat fresher.

18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?
I'd be able to focus more on school then and wouldn't daydream about my dream bod all the time!

19. Do you eat when you are not hungry?
Sometimes, especially when we go to the cafeteria later in the night.

20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
Sometimes.

21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
Nope.

22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
Nervous maybe, but more like a calm nervous when I don't realize that I'm nervous.

23. Do you eat as a reward?
Not usually.

24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
Never when I'm on the computer, sometimes when I watch TV, but I rarely watch TV anyways.

25. What do you normally eat for a meal?
Depends on which meal! At school usually I'll just opt for a sandwich and some soup.

26. What type of snacks do you eat?
I try to eat fruit but sometimes that somehow turns into candy.

27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
Towards the end of this semester I slacked off but I am getting back into running and hopefully some pilates and small weights.

28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
School gym usually.

29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
Running is number one hands down, pilates, yoga.

30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
I've worried about my weight and tried to lose weight my WHOLE life. I am sick of it consuming me so I'm going to consumer it, for once. I want to be done with feeling like I'm close to being happy with my weight, but not totally yet.

31. Do you have rewards for certain goals?

Eh, not really. Nothing specific. Maybe new clothes when I start to lose!

OK, so my first day:

Breakfast-
One bowl of organic cereal with skim milk. 160 Calories

Snack-

Rice Cake 35 Calories

Exercise:
30 minutes of pilates.
*These past two days I've actually developed a pretty nasty cold and cough so I probably won't do much cardio until I get rid of this thing. Maybe I will just try to do more pilates.

So I'm not going to keep track of what I'm eating today or yesterday because I've come down with a really bad cold or something so I haven't been eating much. Tomorrow I'll probably be back on track, and if I lose weight it'll likely be a fluke. But I am drinking lots of liquids so that's good. This is kind of a bust, starting off my diary like this but tomorrow this will hopefully be a bit better.

Hi Monty. I dream of being superactive too. Sleep seems like such a waste of time sometimes but I seem to need it. Anyway, its good that we can always turn to exercise to feel better. Nothing like a yoga class and a good workout to feel the endorphins. I'm sure you can get to your goal weight in a few months time. Luckily you don't have too much to lose. Welcome to the forum. It totally helped me last year when I joined and I lost 20 in four months.

Hey thanks! That's really motivating for me to hear. Twenty is about what I hope to lose and hearing that you did it in the amount of time I want to is really great! I'm still trying to get over this cold but am about to go out to lunch so I'll get something down there. I'm still at about 134 as of this morning so at least I haven't gained!

One of my biggest challenges is going to be cutting out my diet soda consumption. I always rationalize this by saying there's no calories in a diet cola...but I know they aren't a good choice. So I'm trying to switch to more tea and water.

Anyways, haven't eaten anything today yet but I'm about to, and actually have somewhat of an appetite today!

OK, so back on track.

Lunch:
A cup of soup: About 170 Calories
Two small chicken pieces: About 200 Calories
Two glasses of water

Snack:
A few Mini Quakes: 60 Calories
More water

Total: 430 Calories

Could've been way worse...

Hi Karebare! Thanks for stopping by.

So...I'm still sick, but I am down to 131.5? I haven't been keeping track of everything I'm eating but I've been watching myself. Today I'm going to let myself not think about it at all...the last day of 2007 should be fun and worry free for me. I had pizza for lunch and some chocolate...I can deal with that.

However, once 2008 hits....In about 10 hours, I have decided something.

I am taking one year to myself. I am not worrying about anything really besides improving on myself and just making it the best, most complete year yet. I am going to be completely healthy and see where I can end up in one year's time. This probably sounds so lame and I know that this time of year is a total cliche, but I'm ready to just get rid of old habits, self-doubts, and wrong thinking. So 2008 is going to be my year to really do something with myself, and that is a promise that I am making right now.

Happy New Year, everyone!

So, 2008 is upon me and I am totally ready for a lifestyle change. I also got a boost last night when a guy called me gorgeous. That just doesn't happen to me, ever. Maybe that's shallow of me, but it felt nice!

Anyways...today's food (it starts with lunch because...it simply did not wake up in time for breakfast!)

Lunch:
Egg Beater wrap with cheese:
240 Calories

Dinner:
Subway turkey & ham sub
About 300 Calories

Snack:
Half of a packet of weight control oatmeal 80 Calories
Banana 100 Calories
Cup of black coffee 10 calories

Total:
730 Calories

Way lower than I should be at but time was hard to come by today.

I'm feeling great at the end of the true first day. Feeling totally motivated about heading in a new direction and ready to get there. I will try to make it around here more and get to know people some more. The holidays are a busy time as you all know! Take care, happy new year!

I am down to 129 lb somehow! I bet a lot of it is just water weight, so it will likely come back, but that's exciting at least. I am one pound away from having the weight on my driver's license be honest. :blush5:

Wow! So the scale is being really kind to me lately and is telling me that I'm down another half pound today! I'm not sure what's going on...I haven't even been exercising...just eating decently. Although I am becoming way better about going out to eat and choosing the more healthier options on the menu. Yikes, 5.5 pounds down already! This is very exciting to me...I almost don't believe it. I haven't been writing down every morsel that I eat, and I don't think that I will until I reach a plateau and want to kick start my weight loss.

Hope everyone else is having a fabulous 2008 so far!
