Making It!

I have used alot of those calculators and I think what they say is healthy I just don't see. I think build has a lot to do with it. some people are small framed but then people like me that have a large frame just not gonna look right at such a low weight....

Hey same here I am 5"4 and I say 150 would look good on me
because even tho I am short I have a large frame also so 125-130
I would look sick! I have had some people say 160 I would look fine
but 160 sounds like alot for a 5"4 woman.
Ellen goodluck to ya,your doing good so far have a gr8 night,Tammy:)

Hi Ellen...just reading through your diary and I noticed you mention your from Wisconsin...where are you from? I am from Fond du Lac....used to live in Sheboygan/Sheboygan Falls area. Well your doing great! Keep up the good work!

Looking at that calculator, I wouldn't agree with it for me. Depending on what it means by "wrist". I come out as ideal weight 109 or 112 lb with upper range 115 or 117lb. However just looking at things like the relative proportions of my body (disregarding fat), length of fingers etc, I'm clearly on the big boned side of average. Also I've had my bone density tested and know it's relatively very dense. I reckon ideal for me is on the up side of any range - and my BMI range is mid range at 114 with an upper limit of 127.5 lb. That's heaps more than that calculator would have said.

I think it was accurate when it said my muscular development was weak.

I think it's pretty important not to expect to be lighter than you should be. I started when I was young, fitting just past the middle of what was supposed to be normal on some chart I found - about as low as I could be on your calculator and not be under. So I was slim for me. From hip bone to hip bone I was dead flat. My waist was 24". My thighs were a little over average. That's my natural shape. However, I thought I should be at the lowest bit of what was "average" on that chart and kept dieting and cheating and substituting chocolate calories for healthy calories until I had yo-yoed myself into an overweight young person, and am now obese. I don't recommend that!!

I like that perspective felici. I appreciate it. I guess I figure I will know when I hit the "right" weight for my body, but sometimes numbers can be intimidating!

So I'm going to try tracking my calories all day. And I think that I need a new scale. I think my old one is a little too....old? Any suggestions on good brands of scales?

Breakfast:
Bowl of Cereal w/Milk ~ 200 Calories
Glass of water

Good luck to everyone else today!!

I don't know anything about brands of scales. Personally I really like digital readouts with at least one decimal point because it cuts down the arguments inside my head about whether anything has changed and if I'm going up and down. However, the cheap digital scales I bought myself at the supermarket cost maybe $20.00 to buy and then $15.00 a time to replace the batteries in - about once every 6 months. Then someone put a carton of drinks on them so they stayed on - didn't do the batteries much good. So you might want to think about those issues.

I don't like your calculator! LOL. According to it, I'm 5'7" and it says I should be 119pounds. No thank you! Everything else I've seen puts someone at my height and age at 135-155, I think. I'll start by aiming at 155, and when I get there, maybe think about another 10 pounds or so.

Welcome to the forum!

Yeah I did end up getting a new scale...I like it pretty well. Will make sure not to drain the battery with setting something on top of it!

tx-Thanks! I guess I won't go by the calculator!

So I'm doing pretty good so far today:
Breakfast-
Protein Bar-140 Calories
Two cups of coffee  - 20 Calories

Lunch-
Ham Sandwich = 240 Calories
Half of a skinny cow ice cream -75 Calories

So I'm at about 475 Calories so far today...need to get some water in there!

I am so ready to make 2007 my year. 2006 was pretty uneventful and honestly I did not get much done at all! I'm ready to turn that around though. I just have this very positive feeling that 2007 will bring good things to me. I don't know why! But I think it will be great. There is a lot coming up for me this year...and I want to embrace all of it.

Here are some resolutions:
Get a job
Of course, lose the rest of this weight
Graduate high school
Go to college
Allow myself to relax and be more social
Try one new activity a week
Go out and DO more
Do a few "charity" runs this year---never done one!

I think those are some pretty okay resolutions for me. I'm excited for this year and I cannot wait to get going! Happy new year to all of you! Hope you all are able to start it out on a positive note!

OK, so new year today! The challenge has started and my goal is to lose around 8 pounds. I would have done ten but I don't think it's reasonable for me to lose ten pounds in a month when I don't have tons to lose to begin with. TOM just had to start too  so maybe I'm still retaining some water with my weigh in today. It's official though...I gained 4 pounds between Thanksgiving and now. It was up to 136 at one point..so thats a six pound gain. I've lost two of those so now for the other 4 and more. I'm right about where I was when I stopped dieting over the summer. I managed to get down to 130 but yeah. I think that this is just one of those "hills" for me. It's the toughest area for me to get out of mentally because I honestly can't remember the last time I weighed lighter than 130. For some reason I'm thinking that this is just where my body settles at. I know that's not the truth though because 130 is the high end of my BMI...technically I'm 4 pounds overweight right now. Could be worse, I know this...but it's SO psychological for me! If I make it down to 126 by the end of January, I think I will have beaten my mind. And that is really important. I'm really going to get serious about my water intake now. I just feel tons better when I'm getting enough.

Right now, I'm just getting everything in order for the "new year". I've spent the better part of the day cleaning...instead of working out I scrubbed and rearranged and but everything in order. I haven't been too hungry today either, which I'm totally alright with. I've consumed around 600 calories today leaving room for a nice supper. I don't feel too bad about consuming too little today because TOM just makes me feel blahhh. I do enjoy reassuring myself that I'm just "bloated" right now. Cleaning will continue for the rest of the day...and then it's back to work on courses and daily workout tomorrow. Maybe I will pull a miracle and lose a lot of weight this week...!

Well, sorry for the length, just wanted to write it all for awhile. I'm still feeling great about this year. 2007 looks good. Take care!

Good start to the year Ellen. I keep promising myself that today I will scrub and arrange too. I have been doing better with my eating than my housework though!! Well Christmas is done, holidays are done. Time to get stuck in huh! :)

Thanks, felici! Yes, the new year brings with it the need to "finally get this done" attitude and it seems to apply to all areas of life! Good luck with your scrubbing and rearranging! And keep up with the good eating!

Well I have been doing pretty great this week so far. It's funny that I say that because I haven't really exercised at all. But my eating has been awesome and my water intake is improving. Yesterday, you could say I did a bit of impromptu exercise when I walked around a new mall for a few hours checking things out...that counts...right?

Anyways, towards the end of my mall trip, my head started hurting a bit. When I got home I just went to lay down. I woke up a few hours later to a pounding headache. And then I was nauseous and felt completely horrible. I'm thinking it was a touch of a 24 hour flu or something. I'm feeling much better this morning...maybe because of the fact that I'm down another pound.... I don't expect that to sustain, but I plan on trying my hardest. It's only Wednesday and I've already met my weekly goal of dropping two pounds. Now I just have to attempt sustaining that, and continue to eat well. I don't feel like doing my normal exercise today as I'm still a little lightheaded and weak feeling. However, I know I should, so even if I don't go running, I know that I can at least walk a few miles on the treadmill.

On another note, January 1st was the first sunny day we had since Christmas Eve. And it has been sunny everyday since January 1st...I'm going to take that and read it as a good sign for 2007. :)

Hope everyone is doing well!

Woohoo: Reason to be excited!

I just got into my college of choice!

(Even more of a motivation for this weight to go!)

Congratulations on the acceptance! That's fantastic!

And don't sweat the exercise too much if you still don't feel good. Being light headed will only make things worse.

Congratulations on getting your college!! That is such a big deal!! What do you plan to study? Will you have to move away to attend?

Congrats on the weight loss too. It's nice for you to see things turning around.

Thanks you guys. I did a little too much celebrating today...oops! But I did end up running 2.5 miles which is okay.

I have no idea what I want to study...and yes I do have to move away! Not too far, just to Chicago...but that's still "away". I'm pretty excited about it! It will be quite an experience being in such a big city!

Yeah that is really big!! Do you live in a city now, or in the country? You must have a ton of special events between now and college starting.

Well done for the run! I have hardly ever done that because of mostly always not being fit enough - but doesn't it give you a great buzz! :D

I do, I love running. People usually can't understand how it is something to be enjoyed but I just love it.

I live right outside of a city now in the 'burbs. But it will be lots of fun to be in the city right there and all. I'm definitely looking forward to the fall!

As for my diet....these past 2 days have been not so good food wise. But I'm going to change that today. Yikes. Hope the rest of you are doing well!
