Makes no sense to me.

ok, one of my throwers coaches wrote us a new routein a few days ago and his bench sets make no logical sense to me. Its the standard "8-6-4-4-1+".
The thing is say, my max is 280 so ill do about 210-220-235-245-260 as my 1+. I got in to an argument with him today cause he says i should be able to do my 1+ set about 8 times! thats freakin nuts!!!!!! I know im saposta do it to failure but 8 times is about 3x past failure. am i right?


p.s.-can anybody explain what an ice bath does to ur muscles, like why it helps?
 
you should try and "excdr" his expectations!

haha, im not trying to get out of it or anything or try to swing at my coach. i guess i really am just asking about the 1+ swt. I like the 8-6-4-4 part but doing 8 reps at the end seems really hard and could led to injury? just my thoughts

I don't know the scientific explanation, though I'm sure someone on this forum does. But, as far as I've heard, icing down your muscles will prevent soreness the next day.
 
is it 1+ as in 1 rep max? or 8 repps? I dont understand what you're saying.

The cold will gorge your muscles and other tissues with blood.
 
like, the 1+ i guess is just the way says to mean for us to lift to failure for our last set. He wants to lift by our self until we fail but he expects it to be around 8x that it takes us to fail. thats what is wierd
