Lungs and shortness

Quick question.

It's been a few years since I have consistently RAN at least a mile or more and I am starting out running a little more again since I have basic training in May I want to be prepared to be able to run 2 miles with easy effort. However, today in the gym I ran on the treadmill one mile and while running I noticed a burning feeling in my lungs like I used to get when I ran awhile playing football with friends and what not. This burning feeling then had excessive mucous build up in my throat and I was wondering if I started slowly running more and working my endurance and stuff will this burn start to fade away and allow me to breath easier? I hope its not asthma as I was never diagnosed with it but my mother does have it and she smokes. If you all know of this feeling and can say, Hey its ok, just take it easy and consistently run and keep it up and you will get better and your lungs will have an easier time with breathing and running altogether. Let me know! THank ya!
