lower left stomach pains while running...

I just dont get whats going on. I am very inshape and have been running 3-5 miles every other day for the past few years. This happened a few years ago and I ended up quitting running for a while and havnt had it since untill the past 3 days in a row I could barely walk back to my house it hurt sooooo bad. I also do Yoga a few days a week so i am on a very strict stretching routine. i have been doing a lot of research and most forums say cramps happen on the right side, not a whole lot on the left. but it does almost feel as though i tore a muscle. The thing thats really wierd is that I walk for .5 before i start actually jogging to warm up a little, then ill take what seems like 20 steps then my side feels like it was torn open by a foreign object and then i will strech and walk it out and as soon as my foot hits the pavement to jog, it stabs again but worse. sometimes it hurts so bad i cant catch my breathe...has anyone else had any experiance with this cramp? or do i need to make a visit to the doctor? Lately i have been doing a milage builder program and have not had any problems till now, do you think i really did tear a muscle or pull somethingin my stomach?

Not to sure perhaps it would be a good idea to see a doctor.

It may be a pulled muscle, or more likely a cramp, or it may also be referred pain from inside your abdomen such as your appendix which is refered on the right side as you describe.

I know most people have said cramps happen on the right side, but I've always felt them right below my ribs on my left side. Even during the mile as a kid in elementary school, I can only remember them occurring on my left side.

I cannot say the pain was ever bad enough for me to have to stop running. I always put off the pain as to maybe food in my intestine, nothing like a sharp stabbing though, =/ ouch.

Just to let you know though, your not the only one with pains on the left side of things!

same here..
always on the left side for me :)

I was just wondering if you ever figured out what this was. I know exactly what you're talking about. It happened to me when I was running track in high school, and it would be well into the season so I had been running consistently for quite some time. I always said it felt like someone had stabbed a knife into my side and was just wiggling it around. Mine was on my left side as well... and I definitely couldn't keep running because it hurt so badly. Sometimes I could barely even keep walking.

Whenever I run now I'm always nervous about it coming back.... so since you posted have you had anymore insight as to what caused the cramping???

LLQ pain is usually caused by constipation. If you run while you've got a colon full of.... you're going to cramp up. Just a possibility. :)
