Lift, Train, Fitness

the 2 day kayaking is uni week 10, it is start of week 3 on Monday when I have Botany and Bird ID in the wetlands, then the following Monday is kayak training. This is in addition to the academic side of the subject which covers a wide range of survival skills and safety for leading groups in outdoor adventure camps for recreation, education and therapy.

Ages away yet. That's ok. We won't be away at the same time. Your course sounds really good.

I hate to be a group leader for as much as a walk around the zoo but the stuff you're learning sounds awesome!

Just saw the health notice, a woman in town has been confirmed with the virus in town after travelling back from London.

It's not a good time for travel. I'm sorry that I'm missing out on seeing friends, family and the beautiful Australian beaches, but I'm glad that I'm not (by however small a chance) taking any risk at all of spreading the disease.

You, thank goodness, are too sensible and well-informed to be at risk - and I suppose she is already in quarantine, and everyone who travelled with her, also. Will this impact on Littlie's playgroup/kindergarten/whatever?

(On another note - the world's gone silly over toilet paper - not here, and not in South Australia, but... in so many other places in the world! I was reading about Los Angeles this morning. :( )

There have been fist fights in supermarkets in Aus.

When I done some shopping yesterday it was a good thing we didn't need to buy any as there was none in any of the shops, bloke on the checkout at ALDI said the TP crowd cleaned them out when they opened that morning.

With my Asthma, an being super susceptible to bronchitis and other lung infections, I need to be careful.

I saw that fistfight on the news last night. Australia is going bonkers!
I have Asthma, too & am susceptible to lung infections. We do just need to be careful, without being totally bonkers.

I'm sorry - that was an unthinking remark of mine - I'm glad you will be careful (and you, too, @Cate).
Why toilet paper, of all things? Does anyone know?
I think that it's something people know will last, is relatively cheap to stock up on, and is easy to know how to use. Water and dried pulses would probably be better if someone was thinking about a long-term lockdown, but that isn't necessarily thought of as easy to know how to use.

I don't normally pay much attention to the fitness tracker that is always running on my phone, but it looks like I walked over 6k in the swamp in the rain at uni this arvo (1667 calories), The activity was all during that time as I was in bed with flu symptoms till lunchtime. Now for an early night. hope to feel better tomorrow as I have an online assessment to do.

Hope you'll feel better in time for your assessment.

I hope you recover quickly, Tru. Have you thought of testing for you know what? I sneeze a lot with my allergies and will be going on a plane next week. I also wear a mask when going into public toilets where those stinky "deodorisers" often are. I hope people don't think I have it.
Love the Banksia pic. Did you get any leeches on you in the swamp?

considering the effect on those of us with underlying conditions, I would be feeling a lot worse, but I am staying at home as much as possible.

No leeches, my lower body was fully covered and had Aerogard on. I was rather muddy and soaked through on my drive home. Part of the info sheets for later trips includes precautions against leeches. As part of my prep I am also starting to put together a hiking specific light first aid kit. The info sheets say I should have a personal one, but no info as to what should be in it, so I am going off existing knowledge, and adding things that purchased "kits" don have like cold spray that kills ticks without them injecting more crap into you and a pack of second skin which is awesome for blisters, I will also be adding a good snakebite bandage.

Hubby thought I looked very military when I trudged wet an muddy into the house wearing cammo gear last night, the pockets I picked open in my trousers worked well, being just the right size for the subjects field journal in one, and binoculars in the other.

I would be interested to see how your kit looks when you get it together. I'll get some cold spray sometime.

It has been raining on and off for days, and keeping an eye on the cyclone developing off the Queensland coast.

Walked 7k at Uni yesterday

With studying OAE (Outdoor Adventure Education) this semester, the outdoor trips go ahead regardless of weather conditions because as possible future adventure leaders we are supposed to learn more from experience than just simply book learning for the subject. No matter how much you read about surviving and keeping others alive and safe in some conditions is something that needs to be experienced to fully comprehend what it is that needs to be done.

One example used in tutorial is a local mountain which is a tourist hotspot, easy to access etc. apparently there is 6 rescues a week because the proper precautions are ignored.

This is the single day hike I need to do in a couple of weeks
