Lexia's blog thing

Okay, so keeping a journal seems like a really good idea at the moment. I've been losing about a pound a day for the last week. I know that's too much. I'm on about 1300 calories a day BUT have taken to going swimming 3 times a week whereas before I did nothing. Not a thing. Nada.

Can't go swimming today. Really gutted about it actually, even though 2 weeks ago I would have shuddered at the thought of going! Basically, my mum was going to come with me, so we could take turns looking after my daughter in the pool and doing lengths. Unfortunately my little one has developed quite a bad cough so it's best she doesn't go. Oh well, will have to wait until Friday now. I've also found a great exercise in the form of a PS2 dance mat! Get's me moving, anyhoo.

Breakfast was All bran and SS milk, half a banana (I'm not going silly about half portions or anything, it's just that the other half was brusied beyond recognition!) and a kiwi fruit.

Lunch. Hopefully a ceasar salad from the supermarket. And a yog.

Dinner. Home made chili con carne on brown rice.

Snacks will be fruit/crispbreads

I'm not following any particular diet. Like a lot of folks here I seem to be cutting out bread, butter, and potatoes. Still eating rice, white and wholemeal. It's really hard to lose weight by cutting out biscuits, cakes, soda, junk food, chocolate etc., because I don't actually EAT biscuits, cakes, soda, junk food, chocolate etc! Well, junk food, I love pizza but probably have that less than once a month. So, I'm going for reduced portions and NO vodka. Oh, and swimming. And dancematting. (and going to bed at 8pm because I'm bored stiff!)

I joined fitday. Wow, what a great site!! Even though lots of measurements are in 'cups' and I've no idea how much is in a cup cos we don't use them here (UK).

Where did my weight gain come from? Mostly from having my daughter. Actually, not from having her but from sitting on my bum for the next six months pretty much constantly breastfeeding her! (it seems). Then, weight went absolutely crazy last year, totally out of control even though I eat healthily. That's when I was finally tested for hypothyroidism and put on levothyroxine. What a relief. I suppose I ought to get re-tested regularly if I want to lose all this weight.

This is a very disjointed diary entry. Just like my thoughts. :)

First of all: a pound a day- holy hunnies!~ I'm a titch jealous. Not gonna lie. Lol...
Second- what the heck is a yog?? :)

Your off to a really good start, keep up the portioning and exercising! Have a great day tomorrow!

lol, thanks Jess. I know it sounds good, but I'm gonna get used it and when it stops (which it will) I'll be gutted!

Sorry, was being lazy... yog = yoghurt. :)

Still 219 this morning. Which is fine of course. Mind you, my scales only go up and down in lb incremements so it've never gonna be totally accurate anyway. No biggie. Will have to invest in a tape measure because those results are really the ones I'm looking for.

I know how important breakfast is, but was wondering... do I need to have breakfast as soon as I get up for it to be the most beneficial? I woke up at 7 this morning, did the usual routine, got daughter to pre-school, then went to the supermarket and had breakfast when I got back, about half ten. I hope that's okay.

Breakfast: special flakes with skimmed milk
Lunch: Caesar salad and crisbreads with cheese spread.

No idea what to have for dinner.

How do other people manage to diet when they have kids?? I really don't want her to have to eat all low fat food cos she needs to have fat (I know I do too) but I certainly can't afford to cook two different meals twice a day. I guess that's why I'm on the 'eat smaller' portions diet! The main thing I've stopped doing is scoffing up her leftovers! I also know that I give her way too much in her portions so I'm gonna have to cut hers down too. Either that or just chuck away her leftovers, which I hate doing!

Right. I've now upped my calorie intake to 1,700 per day, and will continue with the swimming 3x weekly. I don't have a car so walk everywhere anyway...

I've also decided to NOT weigh myself everyday but do it once weekly. Or maybe twice weekly. It's like an addiction isn't it!

I was thinking, when I lived with my mad ex, about 6 months later I realised that I was fitting into jeans that had been too small for me for years. Looking back, I was eating regular meals and NOT drinking alcohol. So, I know that this is the best way for me to go. I know the weight will come off by itself, albeit painfully slowly. The only reason I put on weight after my shock discovery was because I got pregnant! I could have been slim by now... waaah! but then I wouldn't have my beautiful daughter now so it's all okay.

Yeah. That's a plan. (I think).:)

mmm, made a delicious lentil and bacon soup for lunch. Even my daughter scoffed it up so that was a bonus. Cheap too.

NO idea how many calories that was, am guessing around 300 but it seems to be all 'good' calories, if you know what I mean. I've decided that I'm gonna weigh myself on sunday mornings only. Yeah, right, see how long that lasts.

Well, I've now been 'officially' on a diet for 13 days. And I'm chuffed that I'm doing so well. Trying not to think of it being a diet though... more like 'healthy eating' and the only reason I'm weighing stuff and counting calories is because over the years I've completely lost sight of portion sizes. I intend to stop counting when I'm more used to it all. Still, no alcohol, no crisps and no butter for 13 days. :eek2:

My daughter starts primary school in Jan 2009. I am NOT going to be a fat mum on her first day there. :)

Hey lexia, big welcome to the WLF!

How old is your baby now? My little girl is 15 months.

You're story is very similar to mine, except for the excess weight caused by the thyroid. That would be AmyRB's department. You should definitely stop in her diary as she has the same exact problem, having gotten a thyroid problem while pregnant. She's also very well versed in healthy eating and exercise.

As for me, I became overweight when I was pregnant, though I was already about 10 pounds too "chunky" for about 1 year prior to that. I finally lost all my pregnancy weight about 1 year later, but I'm still working on the excess now.

As for the breakfast, I personally think its a good idea to eat it, but I think its up to you to decide when you want it as long as its probably prior to 11am or so as it otherwise turns into lunch (meaning breakfast was skipped). I wouldn't worry too much about a detail like that as you already have so many other changes to juggle and perfect.

Thanks for the welcome Blancita! My daughter is now 3 (going on 13) :boxing:

Will check out AmyRB as it would be nice to see how other people deal with this thyroid problem, thanks for the nudge!

218 this morning, so upping my calorie intake to 1,700 seems to be working, either that or it's just a blip, probably too early to tell! I'm just so impatient!

Please, if anyone reading this has any advice I would love to hear it! What I'm doing wrong, what I should be doing better, etc. I've been a good girl and read all the stickies! (hence increasing my food) But I really am a newbie, in that this is my first time serious dieting. Sure, I've restricted for a few weeks here and there when I've been a pig and not been able to zip up my jeans. But... aiming for a 164?? First time. :eek2:

So far everything is going well. If I lose 1½lbs per week I can be at/near my target by my birthday. That just seems such a long way to go, but I'm trying to remind myself that if I don't start now, come next June I would be furious with myself that I didn't start 8 months ago and could have finished it all already!

That was as clear as mud wasn't it. I know what I mean. :)

Sounds like you have a good plan, calorie counting and using fitday and all. What exercise are you doing?

Definitely worth getting this started now, cuz not only would you wish you started sooner but you may even be heavier at that point. Time to nip things in the bud and get in this for the long haul, til you reach your goal.

We're pulling for you!

Glad to hear you hit a pound :) And thirteen days and counting on that stuff is awesome! Its been almost two years since I've had a pop or anything from a fast food restaraunt...Like you said- after you get used to it, you don't hafta count anymore :)
Have a great day :D

Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments. :)

The only (only?? lol) excersise I'm doing is going swimming 3x weekly. Which is plenty for me because I've done zero exercise for years!

Average swim is.. 1.1km. Just worked that out, wow! (Which is 44 lengths of our local pool)

I'll pop back later to check how everyone else is doing, right now my arms feel like lead!

I've been at this over 18 months already... and it does seem never ending at times... but tell yourself that it isa lifestyle change - not a diet -and this will form new habits that will stay with you for the rest of your life...

Just keep going one day at a time, and you will be at your goal before you know it...

Hey Lexia! I though I'd return the favor and stop by your diary to see hwo you are doing. Swimming is an excellent workout. I wish there was a pool here I could go swim laps in. Have you thought of incorporating weight lifting into your plans? This will also help speed the weight loss and will change your body shape as you go. Even though I have have only lost 13lbs the past year due to the thyroid problem, my body has changed drastically from the weight lifting. I was so flabby after I had my daughter and had a spare tire around my waist. Now, only 13lbs lighter, I am toned and have NO love handles or spare tire. I have gotten my "athletic build" back and am now working on getting the body fat off. I am just now what my husband considers "thick". Same body from when I was 130lbs, just thicker. Just ask Blancita about this. She has also been a big advocate of weight lifting for years.

Anyways, I hope this helps. Good luck with everything!

Maleficient, thank you for your words of wisdom . I am trying to think of it as a lifestyle change and the foods I'm eating now I would be quite happy to have for the rest of my life.. I've not really felt as though I've been depriving myself. I get times when I'm really peckish and so I have something! and it's still within my calorie range. But yes, you are right.. I know the weight will come off eventually, it has to!

Thanks Amy! That's good to know, I've always thought other people view swimming as a bit of a lightweight excersise! I've been pondering weights as I've seen so many folk here go on about the benefits. I can't use a gym (lack of money and childcare) but I guess I could make some weights... I've lots of empty 2ltr water bottles and there is lots of sand in the sandpit...? Do you think that would do to start? :rotflmao: Thanks for the advice though, it is appreciated.

Okay, not posted anything for a few days, although have been reading the boards like a mental person.

Aquired some new scales and they showed me to be 3lbs heavier than the last lot. Rather than taking away 3lbs every weighing (tempting!) I just upped my ticker and held on! So, instead of the 218 I thought I was, I had to 'go back' to 221. Grrr. Anyhoo, after a week of being like that I am finally 219 (again) Still, I'm quite proud of the fact that I've just carried on with my 'lifestyle change'

I eat absolutely loads! or at least it feels like it. I've also discovered 'weightwatchers' yogurts, and the dessert recipe are out of this world! Especially the lemon cheesecake one.(and only 60 cals...!) Fuck, if I'd known that they weren't rank I would have got them years ago. Oh well, you live and learn, I guess.

I must have read everyones diary this last week. I would like to thank you all for the encouragement they have been giving me. I know I should write something on every one I read, even if it's just to acknowledge them. But I haven't. Honestly, I'm just shy, not rude. :)

Ha! Whatever works! I use my daughter for lifts and ab workouts. She giggles the whole time and she weighs 23lbs so it's not a bad little workout. I do this if I get home late from work and don't get to the gym. This way I spend time with her and burn some calories. You could get a stability ball. They're only $13 at Wal-Mart and you can do tons of workouts with it.

Still, you're doing a great job and getting results from it. You should be very proud of that. Good luck.

Amy

Ooooh Amy, you know I never thought about a live weight before...!

*goes off to check daughters weight*

mmm, 42lbs, maybe not.. although it was a fantastic idea! :)

Gym ball is good, I'm keeping an eye out for one, unfortunately we don't have wal-mart here but I could always try e-bay, at a push. Thanks!

what was I this morning? oh yes 215lbs. Yay! My mini goal is to get to 199 and get rid of that bloody awful 2! I've read lots of posts by various peeps all saying that a tape measure is the best thing to use to judge progress. So that's what I'm doing.. once a week. Arrrrrrgh it was depressing the first time I did it! Still, I managed to get an old pair of jeans halfway over my bum this morning, a month ago I couldn't get them halfway past my thighs. Every little helps. :rotflmao:

Still haven't been hungry.. I think I said before that I guess I'm at an advantage because I never ate junk food or drank soda before so it's not something that I particularly miss.

None of my friends have noticed any weight loss yet. Boooo! 19lbs gone (I think) Oh well, I'm sure they will eventually.

Off to lurk.

I thought Wal-Mart was everywhere! :) You could check amazon.com, they usually have good deals.

Your friends will notice soon, 19lbs is alot of weight so I'm positive you can see a difference in you. Congrats on getting the jeans up higher. I can't wait to get back into my old levi's.

I'm off to work on some work stuff. :( Have a nice evening. What time is it there?
