leg presses

i am one of those people who have medical issues with performing squats therefore i do leg presses. my question is realistically how heavy do you have to go with the leg press to be effective.? i use loads in the 850-900 range but sometimes i feel like it's too much to get really good form. can you build the quads using lower weight loads and higher reps.?
 
The amount of weight will vary from person to person. You want to be lifting in the 6-12 rep range with enough weight so that you are close to failure on the last rep. I.e. you will be lifting heavier weights in the lower rep ranges and vice versa.

Only you will know what your body is capable of.
