Hi all!

My name is Laney and I am a freshman in college. I suppose that I am here because college is a lot harder in terms of health than I expected. There is very little motivation to stay healthy when you surround yourself with friends who are succumbing to unhealthy eating and exercise habits as well. So I turn to you all for support. While I have not reached the "Freshman 15" I am well on my way if I do not start to be careful. It's crazy how easy it is to eat loads of sweets int he cafeteria. So, I want to start being much healthier. Hope to see you all around!!

Hi Laney!

I'm new here too, and I'm also in college so I know exactly what you're talking about! I'm the only girl living with two guys (that should sound like a dream) who don't cook, so there's always takeout in the house. Are you out on your own as well?

~Welcome!~ :)

What are your goals?

What will your meals be like?

Exercise?

I'm Stacy btw..lol.. I'm 34... I have a lil sis in college right now.

I worry about her often! I hope she is eating right..She is under weight!

She received a basketball scholarship..{She's in Abilene, TX}

She was like me at that age..Just a tall/lean toothpick! :rotflmao:

Ahhhh...those were the days. :D

Once again, WELCOME!

~Best Wishes~

Hi Laney,

Take it from someone who used to be thin and got to be really big - if you start weighing yourself regularly you could stop yourself from getting a major problem. I certainly wish that I had started weighing myself every day when I was young.

If you are not naturally a "going to a gym" or "doing sports" type of person - then the best advice I could give regarding exercise is to get a pedometer. I wear mine all day long. They are cheap and you can monitor how many steps you do each day. Lots of authorities recommend that we should try to do 10,000 steps a day.

Take care
Best wishes

Wow! So welcoming =) It's nice to have that, I really appreciate it. I am actually attending an out-of-state school and came here knowing nobody. Also, I'm in the dorms as well and have a meal plan through the university. While this might seem like a bad this it's also a blessing because they do really provide us with healthy choices...it's just that there are just as many if not more unhealthy choices to counter those.

My goals I suppose are to lose about 15 pounds. I actually lost six when I first came to school and have gained it all back...so I'm back at the start. I currently weigh about 130 and while that might not seem like a lot, I'm pretty short at about 5 ft. tall...

I guess it's a little difficult for me to count exact calories but I can guess. I just want to physically write down everything I'm eating so that I keep track of it...usually I pop some chocolate down and don't think twice.

I actually do enjoy going to the gym...I have a membership to the school's and my friends and I get together and go. My hope is to go about 5 times/week. Usually when I go, it is in vain as I've eaten so badly throughout the day, working out doesn't really have too much of an effect.

So...for today...

Breakfast:
1 bowl of Special K w/ Skim:about 120 Calories
1 Cup of black coffee: About 10 Calories
2 glasses of water: 0 Calories

Lunch:
Spinach Wrap: About 600 Calories
Corn: 100 Calories
Mini Wheats: About 200 Calories
Water: 4 Glasses
*Wow, so this is when writing things down is good. I felt like I ate good but didn't realize how many calories I was consuming! I guess now I have room for a small dinner and my lesson is learned!

Snack:
Fuze Drink: 10 Calories

Totals:
Calories: 1040
Water: 2 Glasses

Work Out:
Treadmill/eliptical/weights/abs: About 500 Calories

Goals:

Short-Term:

Drink 8 glasses of water each day at least
Work out 5x/week
Take vitamin daily
Keep on top of school work to reduce stress and all night studying.

Long-Term: (By December 15, 2007)
Lose 15 pounds
Get into a regular sleep pattern
Stop getting sick! (This is unbelievably hard in the dorms...I've been sick on and off since the beginning of school!)

Thanks so much again for the great support...I'm loving this place already!

Hi

If you can keep on with your plan and write out your food up front like that each day - I am sure you will get to your target very soon.

I am concerned that you keep getting sick. Is this because there is a lot of cold / flu about?

In addition to a multivitamin I take garlic oil and fish oil which might help. Also if either me or my husband feel a cold coming on we take echinacea to help fight it off.

Take care

Hey Laney
Good to see that writing things down is helping you out! And I like that you have short term and long term goals! They're all great things to work towards, and I should definitely keep the homework one in mind :p

Woo! Sorry to have a delay, been busy just trying to get my schedule worked out and I think I'm in good right now.

As for getting sick...I'm not sure? It just seems that when I start to get better I end up sick again a few days later.

Anyways, I've been really good about working out. That's the plus side of being in school, there is always someone willing to tag along to the gym with me. I've been mixing cardio and weights a bit. Today was mostly cardio though. I ran 5 miles on the treadmill. Running is probably what I enjoy most...I'm fortunate that I saw the benefit in running when I was in middle school and so I began running then. The downside is that I seem to go in spurts of a few months where I will run a lot and then I won't. It's something that I'd really like to keep up...as a lifestyle. I've been craving my daily run lately. I love that feeling.

Eating...ehhh. I'm really trying to work on it.

I will try to keep a more detailed account of my days from now on. Really appreciate all of the support!

Well done for running 5 miles on the treadmill. Keep it up and the weight will be off in no time at all.

Take care

Thanks!

Today:

Breakfast:
1 bowl of Special K with Skim Milk: About 180 Calories
1 Banana: 120 Calories
1 Glass of Water: 0 Calories
1 Cup of Black Coffee: 10 Calories

Total: 310 Calories

I plan to go to the gym later after all of my classes and such. I'm really just feeling amazingly positive about adopting a new, more productive lifestyle. It's so easy to get lazy in college as I've discovered but I don't want to be that person. A healthy lifestyle to me just means a good balance. When it comes down to it, I'm confident that I'm capable. The motivation for me is wanting to go home for winter break and having everyone notice how happy I am. I've never been this happy before, and I think I needed to get to this point where I'm comfortable with myself before any significant change would become possible. Now I just need to work on sleeping more and drinking less coffe.

Hi Laney, just thought I'd stop by. I just started a diary and figured I should start making friends here!

I think it's awesome that you are trying to step it up while in college. I am a senior and high school, and this is my second round of weight loss. I'm like 135, and I want to get down to 120, so we have similar goals! I am so nervous that I will crash and burn in college, so I love to see people like you!

Hope you had a great Wednesday!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! Agh, I'm really sorry about not keeping it up around here...I'm really going to try. School just has me so busy. After the next 24 hours though, life will be a lot easier. (Two exams and two papers to get through by 10am tomorrow morning...umm help?) Haha, anyways...I haven't been working out as much as I'd like to lately...but I think walking all over campus and putting all my energy into school and having some kind of social life makes up for it...a little. I am down to 127.8 now, though. Which I am happy about. I was up and down for awhile but I'm there now. I'd really like to get to 120 before I go home for winter break...we will see how that goes, though.

Hope you are all well!

Hey Laney!

Good to see you again! How many courses are you taking this semester? i'm only taking 1, but i've been taking 6 per semester for the last 3 years- what a difference!! it'll be crunch time for me soon, i have a research paper due at the end of the month... *stressful* lol

good to see you're getting closer to your goal- keep up the good work!

Hey there, I'm taking 5 courses this semester (and regretting it!). Actually it hasn't been so bad, except when exams and such fall on the same day. I'm learning, though. Today I got a paper back and received a 4.0 on it! And I think I did really well on the exam I took today and the paper which I handed it. This week has been crazy stressful with two papers due and two exams all within 24 hours...I'm glad it's almost over. So amid all of the stress...I was happy to get on the scale this morning only to find...

I was down to 126.4!!! I was really proud of myself. Part of me thinks that the stress just sped up the weight loss though and that it will come back on. But I actually treated myself to a big lunch today, dessert and all because I was just so stressed this week. I truly felt it was deserved. (Plus I was stark mad hungry having skipped breakfast due to waking up late!) But things are going much better than I anticipated they would be. I'm feeling quite good.

No more exams until December now. Yikes! The end of the semester is coming so fast!!! I'm looking forward to taking courses over the summer to ease the load of classes throughout the year. It will be nice. Today was really exciting though because it started snowing this morning! Just a dusting of a few flurries but Lord it made me excited. I love nothing more than cold weather, jeans, and sweaters. I'm so looking forward to going home for break and curling up by the fire. Anyways, hope you are all well!
