Lagniappe's Journal: Yikes. I'm FAT!

I'm feeling psyched. .... Even though I'm losing weight, I feel like I probably need to eat more calories and get more exercise for everything to be in balance.

Yuppers... more calories and possibly a bit more exercise, dollface. It's all about creating a calorie deficit. Do you also weight train? If not, you may want to look into this, because it'll definitely help you to lose quicker and more efficiently.

By the way....

:jump::jump:Congrats on Hitting Onederland!! :jump::jump:

Thanks MGB. You always give good advice. I can't really do the gym thing at this point. The "Curves" here doesn't provide child care (and I do NOT want to go to a co-ed gym the way I look now). My husband doesn't get home until around 8 at night this semester so he can't be much help in child care right now. My stepson does have some weights I can use, but they are just those little 10 or 15 lb barbell thingys. I guess that's better than nothing, right? I'm planning to use those with my Body Electric workout tape but just haven't dug them out from under his bed, yet.

You're probably talking about resistance training? I hear people talk about that and I'm not real sure what it is, but I guess it's using machines. I'm hoping to get my son into part-time pre-school next spring and that might be my chance to get into a program at Curves depending on how much it will cost. I'd like to do it, it just doesn't seem feasible right now.

Hey girl,

you know, Curves is a great environment for women who are just starting out with resistance training. (They use hydraulic machines for their circuit training.) However..... after some time, your muscles start getting used to the same ol' routine that they don't work as hard as before. Free weights, on the other hand, are fantastic for a few reasons: 1. cheap, 2. you can do that at home.. woohoo!, 3. more movement to work the muscles, 4. it'll maintain the muscle you have now during your weight loss. 5. versatility. 6. you can keep an eye on the little one. If you're just starting out: 10 and 15lbs can be a bit too heavy. You can try purchasing 3, 5, 8 lb weights.. depending on your strength as it is.

oh and before I forget:

weight training- dumbells, weighted bars, etc
resistance training- Curves (hydraulic forces) or even those Pilates resistance bands
strength training- aerobic exercise, pilates, yoga.. blah blah

In a nutshell, mami.. ;) have a great day.

Sometimes I feel like I get enough exercise just pushing my luck... but I'll do the weights too :)

I'm leaving tomorrow morning for 4 days in New Orleans. I figure there's a 75% chance I'll have gained back ALL the lost weight by the time I return. Who can pass up Cafe Au Lait & beignets at Cafe Du Monde? Shrimp and Garlic Fettucini at Irene's? Pizza at Angeli's? A fried oyster po-boy at Liuzza's? Tiramasu ice cream at Angelo Brocato's? More importantly, can I?

I must (must) listen to the voice in my head that says, "No, you're NOT really going to eat THAT, are you????"

Argh. Just shoot me now.

Girl, please.... this is what you do..... ok... are you paying attention? ;) On a separate sheet of paper try to figure out how you can eat every single thing, but in smaller portions, so that it fits in your calorie allotment. It's as simple as that. You don't have to run away from the fettucine... if anything, eat half of it and get the rest boxed. The same goes for the rest. It's not about depriving yourself of everything you love... it's about figuring out what you can fit into your daily caloric intake. :) Baby steps, girly. You'll do just fine, hun. Most importantly, just enjoy yourself on your trip.

PS Thanks for the "shrinking face" post at the before
and afters. haha I totally forgot about that thread.

You're right. I know you're right. I don't have to eat like a pig even though it's what I've done best for the past few years. There's lots of things I can eat guilt free, even in New Orleans. I'll just be sure to keep a bottle of water with me, and my stash of granola bars so I won't be tempted to knosh all day.

Thanks!

Best suggestion I can think of. I have never been to new orleans but I am betting as it's tourism is based on food it's a lot like CHi town so do what we do when we go there lol. Tell your DH that you are really happy with the weight you have lost and you want to be able to keep it up while on vacation. Tell him the way to do this is to share meals ie/ get everything you would usually get but (again I am assuming Chicago portions in new orleans) get 1 order between you and split it. You get all the joy and half the calories :). This worked for me last summer but you have to like the same things obviously. It gets to be like a game cause if you get shrimp and there is 5 pcs its rock paper sicsors for the fith pc. :) good luck and your doing great so far

Need2BSmaller: That's a great suggestion, thanks. We do like much of the same food although he tends to put a lot more salt and tabasco on his food than I do. He is supportive of my diet but at the same time, he is one of those "enjoy yourself, it's later than you think" types. The last thing he'd dream of doing is passing up a good meal just to lose a couple of pounds (lucky for him, he doesn't have a weight problem). I imagine there will be a certain amount of good-natured, subtle -- but unmistakeable --- pressure for me to feed my face as per the norm. I do hate for him to feel I'm being a stick-in-the-mud.

Maybe I'll just tell him I'm not very hungry, get a salad and steal bites from his plate :)

Better a stick in the mud then stuck in the mud :) you will be fine. Just keep in mind that your still working to lose don't think if I gain a few I will jsut lose them again thats when you get in trouble on vacation. Think about this if you can go to new orleans and still lose a lb by portion control you can do anything when it comes to weight loss.

That's it, in a nutshell. I have tried dieting a couple of times before, and I don't have trouble during the week. It's STICKING with it on the weekend that always screws me in the end. I'll be really good Monday through Thursday, and then Friday night my husband will say, "Let's go out for sushi" or something (my favorite food) and I'll end up eating enough for a sumo wrestler, plus having 3 or 6 cocktails, and then it's all over. I'm a lost cause for the entire weekend, and when Monday comes I've completely lost my focus, my discipline, etc., and it can take me weeks or months to get my groove back. I hope that what will be different this time is that I have a more specific "plan" that I follow (sugarbusters, which requires me to completely avoid certain foods that I've actually really lost my taste for now) and I have this forum to keep my rear in gear :)

Thanks for the feedback!

thats a really good point that I had not thought of. If you staying at a motel with internet access you shoul dlog on for a good dose of WLF before you go out it will help keep you focused as well :)

I had that in mind when I made reservations. The place has wi-fi and I'm taking my laptop, so I'll definitely be logging in a couple of times a day. At this stage, it is definitely necessary for me to keep that reinforcement going :)

Hey you,
I wrote in your introduction and finally was able to find your diary!~
Sounds like your doing great hun!

I hope your trip goes well, or is going well!

You can do it!

{Could also make yourself some mini goals re: this.. Once you write them down you may have more control bc you'll want to get home and check them off and then share with us!}

You can make mini goals relate to anything!

Check menus on-line before going out and have a game plan before you even get there. :)

So far, I've been good. Had sushi last night but I didn't eat rolls. but sashimi instead. Also had miso, marinated squid salad, and some baked salmon stuffed with snow crab and topped with a little eel sauce. (sounds yummy, right?) Today, I just had some bacon and green tea for breakfast (but man, those raspberry scones looked GOOD); and a corned beef & swiss on rye. Tonight will be Mexican food and I can probably just have some fajita-something with no tortillas. We walked about 3 miles today. My dogs are barking and I smell like a less-than-genteel southern belle, but we're having a great time. Thanks for all the good vibes. At this rate, I think I'm gonna waddle through successfully. Lousy wi-fi connection here so I can't really post much more than this but will catch up with visiting you guys on your journals when I get home.

Hi

Finally got round to checking by your diary - you popped into mine a few days ago.

It looks like you are doing well. I hope that you are managing to stay strong during your trip away. Whilst holidays and treats are all really nice - in some ways it is a real nuisance being tested when you have things running nicely and successfully as you have.

I see that we are very similar weights now - you are just a few pounds ahead of me in the direction that we are all aiming for.

I posted a reply to your message in my diary a few days ago - but you might never have seen it. I am still very much getting in the swing of how these diaries work. Here is a copy in case you missed it :

Hi Lagniappe

Thanks for your positive comment and good luck to your friend with PCOS.

I really cannot believe how well this attempt is going. Everything before has failed so badly since I got PCOS - that is how my weight got up so high.

Tell your friend about the walking thing - it has really worked so well for me. I really wish that I had known about this years ago.

I really cannot say whether it would have worked quite so well for me when I was younger though as it is possible that my hormones are altering because of my age - I am 48 now so the menopause may not be too far away.

PCOS is such a nightmare - and with anything hormonal you can live your life on an emotional knife-edge. I saw a specialist once and he summed it up as "life is not fair for PCOS ladies".

They say that the only real thing to help PCOS is losing weight - but you put on weight easier than normal people and find it harder to lose weight. I find that I put on weight with some foods much more excessively than the calories would ever indicate. I have not seen anything scientific about it but I know that if I weigh myself every day I can see it happening on days that I have been saintly.

There are a lot of health risks associated with PCOS - dramatically more likely to develop a whole heap of things:

A woman with PCOS is 7 times more likely to develop diabetes than a woman of the same age and lifestyle who is not a sufferer; 7.4 more times at risk of a heart attack and 4 times more likely to suffer from high blood.

Much worse for me than the joys of morbid obesity - I found infertility to be the hardest to handle.

The excessive body hair is certainly a drag. Tell your friend to get lasered while she is young. A lot of people do not know that laser does not work on grey or white hairs. I had electrolysis for nearly 20 years, get lasered now and still have an ongoing problem.

Best wishes
Margaret

Take care
Margaret

I'm back. I had a great time and apparently (according to my scale) gained 5 lbs. I don't see how this is possible! I walked my ass off, literally -- at least 3 miles each day, even in the rain. I stuck to my diet most of the time, although I had a couple of spectacular failures (yeah, that cheeseburger at 1 am at Checkpoint Charlie's was a Bad Idea). But 5 lbs!!!??! ARGH!

I'm hoping that some of this is fluid retention since it is that TOM that all women are acquainted with. I feel like a water balloon.

But, no matter. I am back on the wagon, and having my Kachi cereal and green tea for breakfast, and I'll get this extra 5 lbs off. I figured I'd gain some weight, I'm just disappointed it was THIS MUCH! Bleh...

Hope you are all fine! Will be visiting Journals and catching up on things today!

Bah.... don't frett it, girl. If anything, it's probably from either the high sodium in the foods you ate or yup... TOM is coming to visit soon. To alleviate the sodium drinks lots of water. As for TOM, just keep in mind that during this time, your body burns 250-300 calories MORE due to menstruation process. Use that to your advantage, girl.. and you'll see the scale drop. ;) Welcome back.....
