Knife fighting

hey I was just wondering about knife fighting and defending against knife attacks. Whats is the best way I can learn either one.

best knife defence: Turn around and run like hell, no point fighting someone with a knife if you dont ABSOLUTLEY have to, nomatter how good you are it doesnt take much for a person to manage to slash you with a knife.
other than that.. i guess you should take some kind of martial art, most of them have knife defence.

well i m not exactly into knife fighting but videos ive seen of knife fighting dont just appeal to me.

they are either to difficult to execute in a real environment or they are too complicated in their structure to be able to recall in a fight

id go for something thats simple, easy to execute and has a simplified structure for every offence and defence

there are many good schools that seem to fit the above criteria and are probably effective (in my opinion)

oh ok jw because a week ago i turned 18 and got myself a diablo knife and i remembered my sensai ran a drill with me when i was 2 mounths into tenchi kenpo. I am also aware of the fact that most cases the knife is also turned on you and used against you.

Yeah, but there is a martial art specifically geared towards knife fighting. Very impractical stuff. What are the odds that you have a knife, he has a knife, and you both know how and agree to knife fight?

though I'm still learning empty handed combat i still feel as though learning how to properly handle a knife and how to defend against knife attacks would be very useful indeed. Ive read a few issues of blackbelt magazine that talk about knife attacks and defending against a knife well I live in Boston and though it may seem like yuppies paradise but there are alot of bad parts to it but isnt every major city like that.:D

best defense against a knife attack?

a skeleton laced with adamtanium, with 3 razor sharp claws. Couple that with super strength, animal keen senses and a healing factor, you'll be fine.

I had a friend who was great a martial arts expert, and knife fighter, he was good...and had numb-chucks that had blades on them, kind of creepy when he started slinging at me and stuff, but it was kind of kool....still nothing id get into lol

That's not what I was getting at. He was interested in knife fighting...if you want to learn knife fighting, then learn from the best. Aside from that, the arts of Silat, Escrima, and Arnis are more than just bladed/stick arts, they have a lot of empty hand stuff. But hey, if ya carry a pocket knife around, it can be handy to know how to use it or at the least if you have practiced against knives, if someone pulls out one, you at least have a greater advantage than never have had practiced against knives at all. It has a lot to do with the psychological advantage someone has when pulling out a blade...you take that away from them...then you take the blade away from them.

I can only relate from personal experience of having had a blade pulled out on me once but learning what I have learned came into great use at this moment.

Of course I think most of us will go through our entire lives and have very few, if any, confrontations.

Sorry evo, I had this thread up on my screen for hours before I can back and replied. It was meant as a reply to the topic...Ryofire and Karky's first posts.

i can relate to evo us pisces need to stick together lol. but yea I am familiar with Silat ive seen it used in the video game Mortal Kombat Deception and have had some thought of taking it up in the past and will still keep it in mind until then and speaking of nunchukus currently I am on youtube watching the original TMNT cartoons brings back memories doesnt it? :)

and believe it or not I'm watching an anime version on it to find it just type in teenage mutant ninja turtles into the search engine and enjoy it is very interesting to finally see the anime version of it and to those who point out the obvious, YES, I do realize that this has nothing to do with knife fighting

thx for that link Lei I'll read when I have some spair time ok. Its a dangerous world out there but only if we make it that way.

well i dident mean a martial art with only knife defence:p but doesnt most arts have some kind of defence system against knife attacks?

This is true. Also Lei I never mentioned this but for some reason your avatar reminds me of Fredrick Douglas why him don't ask.

Frederick Douglass? The African American legend?

My avatar is Boxy Brown...a cardboard box with a drawn on face with an afro...From Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Karky, yeah, I know you weren't just talkin bout them, but I was just bringing up the subject of those knife-fighting schools specifically.

wow I havent watched that show in a long ass time, but still Fredrick douglas was the man after reading his narritave I tottally admire him. He as well as Bruce Lee(even though thats completly off subject and the fact that I'm going off the subject with a forum that posted) were truly Legends

Hey guys, Im new here so ill be bumping an old thread.

I love knives, I collect them. I dont train religiously in knife fighting though, I just made sure that I know how to use them properly and defend myself incase its a matter of life or death. Otherwise, I would run even if I have a knife. Its not worth getting stitches if you ask me =)

I guess nothing beats training with a pro in kali, arnis and eskrima, or modern knife fighting. Books and videos would also work if you could find a partner to train with.

Here are two sites with really nice articles on self defense and knife fighting to help you get started.
