Dear WLF,
Hi all! Here is my story.
I am 23, female, and from Norfolk, England. I went to university in Birmingham, and since then have been travelling the world with my fiance.
I have never been obese, but since my early teens I have been a little overweight, and struggled to keep it under control. In my first year of university I gained a lot, and hit 168lbs, my highest ever weight, when I determined to sort it out once and for all.
I am far from a newbie on this forum, though I'd be flattering myself to think that anyone remembers me, I have been away for a year and I know this is a VERY busy forum!!
I first joined WLF in September 2006, and wrote regularly until December hit(read CHRISTMAS!! The wrecker of healthy lifestyles). I came back in January 2007 and did quite well until June, when I was last around... a whole year ago.
When I decided to come back to WLF, I though about changing my "name" etc, and starting completely from scratch, but I've just had a look at my old diarys and there is still stuff there I can learn from, and I don't want to waste the foundations I built then.
So, now it's time for an update... what have I been doing in that year! Some of you may remember that, as I was last writing, I was planning an epic round-the-world trip. Well, I have been travelling since last September and it has been an incredible, life changing year, I have seen and learned so much. In a nutshell, we (D and I) left our hometowns in England, and travelled across Russia, China, South East Asia, India, Australia and South America. So, I have (kinda) had an excuse for not being around!! (OK, not much of an excuse, I know internet cafes are everywhere!) We are now in Mexico, our final 'stop'. We fly home to England in four weeks.
And of the many wonderful things that have happened this year, the best is that D proposed... we are engaged!
We have a fairly active 'travelling style', we do a lot of hiking, most recently the rather strenous, three and a half day Inca Trail in Peru, that involves three mountain passes. Having said that, it can be weeks between hikes, with no exercise other that walking round towns (of which, admittedly, we do a lot!) Also, it can be very hard to control diet on the road. I don't mean to make excuses, there are MANY times I could have made a healthy choice and didn't, but in some countries (eg Chile, Argentina) it's very hard to find healthy options in cafes, and it is quite unusual that a hostel have kitchen facilities. I have REALLY missed doing my own cooking this year!
Anyway. The result being I now (as usual) weigh more than I would like to, and would like to do something about it. My highest ever weight was 168lbs. When I joined the forum it was 160, and when I left it was 147. Now it is around 150lbs. Not too bad, but I'd love to be able to maintain between 130 and 140.
The main reason I'm coming back now is because I fly home for good in a few weeks, and I want to start getting back into a healthier mindset now.
I can't set any specific goals now, as I said I can't cook for myself, so I can't count calories, I can't go to gyms, I am travelling very light so I don't have any kind of exercise exipment of my own (including running shoes!)
So, my goals for the next four weeks are to:
1) Walk and swim whenever possible
2) Try to make healthy choices from menus (not 100% of the time, I'd be missing out if I didn't have the occassional beer and taco... in Mexico after all! Maybe I'll aim for 80% of the time!)
3) Come on this forum at least once a week. More than that is a little unrealistic in my present situation, but I know from experience that the healthiness of my lifestle is directly related to how often I come on this forum!
4) Weigh myself once a week.
I'll set new goals in four weeks.
I think this entry is already far too long, so I'll just end with saying that the support from WLF forum Ihave recieved in the past was just incredible, I could not have lost the weight that I did without it. I look forward to sharing support with you again this time.
