Dear WLF,

Hi all! Here is my story.

I am 23, female, and from Norfolk, England. I went to university in Birmingham, and since then have been travelling the world with my fiance.

I have never been obese, but since my early teens I have been a little overweight, and struggled to keep it under control. In my first year of university I gained a lot, and hit 168lbs, my highest ever weight, when I determined to sort it out once and for all.

I am far from a newbie on this forum, though I'd be flattering myself to think that anyone remembers me, I have been away for a year and I know this is a VERY busy forum!!

I first joined WLF in September 2006, and wrote regularly until December hit(read CHRISTMAS!! The wrecker of healthy lifestyles). I came back in January 2007 and did quite well until June, when I was last around... a whole year ago.

When I decided to come back to WLF, I though about changing my "name" etc, and starting completely from scratch, but I've just had a look at my old diarys and there is still stuff there I can learn from, and I don't want to waste the foundations I built then.

So, now it's time for an update... what have I been doing in that year! Some of you may remember that, as I was last writing, I was planning an epic round-the-world trip. Well, I have been travelling since last September and it has been an incredible, life changing year, I have seen and learned so much. In a nutshell, we (D and I) left our hometowns in England, and travelled across Russia, China, South East Asia, India, Australia and South America. So, I have (kinda) had an excuse for not being around!! (OK, not much of an excuse, I know internet cafes are everywhere!) We are now in Mexico, our final 'stop'. We fly home to England in four weeks.

And of the many wonderful things that have happened this year, the best is that D proposed... we are engaged!

We have a fairly active 'travelling style', we do a lot of hiking, most recently the rather strenous, three and a half day Inca Trail in Peru, that involves three mountain passes. Having said that, it can be weeks between hikes, with no exercise other that walking round towns (of which, admittedly, we do a lot!) Also, it can be very hard to control diet on the road. I don't mean to make excuses, there are MANY times I could have made a healthy choice and didn't, but in some countries (eg Chile, Argentina) it's very hard to find healthy options in cafes, and it is quite unusual that a hostel have kitchen facilities. I have REALLY missed doing my own cooking this year!

Anyway. The result being I now (as usual) weigh more than I would like to, and would like to do something about it. My highest ever weight was 168lbs. When I joined the forum it was 160, and when I left it was 147. Now it is around 150lbs. Not too bad, but I'd love to be able to maintain between 130 and 140.

The main reason I'm coming back now is because I fly home for good in a few weeks, and I want to start getting back into a healthier mindset now.

I can't set any specific goals now, as I said I can't cook for myself, so I can't count calories, I can't go to gyms, I am travelling very light so I don't have any kind of exercise exipment of my own (including running shoes!)

So, my goals for the next four weeks are to:
1) Walk and swim whenever possible
2) Try to make healthy choices from menus (not 100% of the time, I'd be missing out if I didn't have the occassional beer and taco... in Mexico after all! Maybe I'll aim for 80% of the time!)
3) Come on this forum at least once a week. More than that is a little unrealistic in my present situation, but I know from experience that the healthiness of my lifestle is directly related to how often I come on this forum!
4) Weigh myself once a week.

I'll set new goals in four weeks.

I think this entry is already far too long, so I'll just end with saying that the support from WLF forum Ihave recieved in the past was just incredible, I could not have lost the weight that I did without it. I look forward to sharing support with you again this time.

Kez

welcome back, kezzy - you sure have been busy in your absence... sounds like some great adventures...

COngrats on your engagement too - that's exciting :D

Dear WLF,

I am still in Carribean Mexico, enjoying the sun and island hopping! Now we are in Cozumel:

It's beautiful, and VERY hot! It is 32 degrees, but because of very high humidity, it feels like 39 degrees (that's official, not a guess, it's like the opposite of wind chill!) Anyway, I have now come out in a BAD attack of heat rash! The only other thing that helps is going for a swim in the perfect, warm, turquiose sea. Oh, what a trial ;-)

I went snorkelling yesterday, and saw some lovely reefs, and several huge baracudas! I LOVE snorkelling! Strange maybe, as I find scuba diving rather scary! Tomorrow we're going to rent bikes to explore the island (keeping active, see?!)

As for the "healthy lifestyle program" (trying to think of an alternative word for diet), it could be better, but it could be worse. To be honest, if I can survive the next three weeks without putting on weight, I'll consider that an achievement! Mexican food is amazing, though I won't drone on about it for fear of tempting those holier than me who are on sticter regimes! Though I am far from angelic, I have made some healthier choices recently. Last night I had a grilled shrimp salad for dinner, with lime dressing (and fries on the side, but I only ate half) and this morning I had a fruit plate for breakfast.

I will update again when I come across some scales, and manage to weigh myself. Many pharmacies have scales, so I'll keep my eyes open. Only problem is, of course, I'm always weighing on different scales, which will not necessarily be calibrated the same.

when on vacation... judging by how your clothes fit is generally a good way of knowing how you're doing... or a tape measure... but jhave fun - stay active and just be aware of what you're eating and drinking :D

That's pretty much what I'm doing, really.

Ooo, I meant to say I went clothes shopping the other day and bought some really nice, pretty beach clothes (even a bikini!) that made me feel really good, as I'd gone shopping the previous day, and couldn't find anything to fit me!

It's scary how quickly the diary section moves!!

Haven't managed to weigh yet, but I'm looking out for scales in pharmacies, and I'm going snorkelling again tomorrow!

Hey WLF,

Well, three weeks after my last entry I am finally back in England, and ready to start monitering my weight again. My intention is to focus on fitness and eating in moderation, and make slow, sustainable improvements.

I have confirmed today that my weight is 150lbs. I am happy, and a little surprised, that I didn't put on any weight during my month long stay in Mexico!

Hi kezzy.

I rejoined WLF a couple of weeks ago, after an absence not quite as long as yours and without your admirable achievement of keeping your weight stable. (But I'm back in the game. :) )

Thanks for the message you left me. I really enjoyed your company here too. Your year of travelling sounds mind blowing. I hope all is still going well.
