Are "they" REALLY trying to not grade kids in school these days???

They are "grading" to standardized levels of education... yes. I just meant about changing the color of the pen used for grading as to not distroy our delicate week confidenced children!! Does that sound right? Is that what people are trying to raise... some may be, but I am not. Let me ask you about the other instance with the sports?? What are your thoughts as to not keeping score, not TIMING RACES, giving everyone the same trophy whether 1st or 101st?? Is that really fair, or teaching any good lessons except for "being mediocre is the norm and is all that is expected from everyone". No one is "special"? No one can earn recognition?

Yes, good points. If anything, "they" can emphasize that we're good at different things--like someone who sucks at writing might be able to hold numbers well in the head, or someone who can't run a mile can make beautiful art......there's more to life than what's taught in school.

I agree 100%!!! But let those talents be found! If everyone gets the same "prize" for whatever effort they put forth, where's the motivation??!?
Why dare to be great?? Is that to much? I may be over reacting!! :blush5:
Where's Trops... we need his words of wisdom?!!??

I was remaining silent for the most part because I disagree with you on some of the points. I think that it is very important for kids to learn how to play sports. Learning the skills needed to play hockey, soccer, run track, it's all important. At this learning stage that should be the focus, not scoring the goal. That and learning the love of the game. This should be probably up to around age 7. After that, the kids have enough skills to put them to use and they will be rewarded for this. First place is an honor that goes to the team that works together and wins the most games. That is great and it's something that older kids can really strive for, but that is not the ultimate goal in sports. If it was, then 99% of the people who do it are failures, and I'm not buying that.

For schools, I think that a lot of teachers have changed their focus to teaching not so much grading. I want my kids to learn, not be judged. The way it goes now is that there are things they know and things they don't know yet. It doesn't mean that they failed, they just didn't learn it yet, but they will, and that is the goal. Giving a kid a failing grade for not knowing the spelling words does nothing for a poor speller. Isolating the problem areas and working on that, will help. Again, this goes for a young age. As they progress in school they start to get graded on projects and the grade reflect the work. Not everyone will get the same, and it will be apparent which kid worked hard and which didn't.

When it comes to PC, I have some opinions on this. I think that people try to be PC but it's mostly because they don't know enough about the people that they are trying not to offend. That's why we have Native Americans, even when the people them self want to be called Indian. That's why we hear of black people from Europe or Africa referred to as African American. PC, most of the time, means Public Cowardice.

True, but SOMETHING had to give otherwise we'd be like THIS (wait for minute 3:00--btw the quality of this is bad for the 1st few seconds. And his whole routine is HILARIOUS)

I HAVE to end things on comic relief. That is how I roll :p

Bunny - Thanks for the comic releif... That entire thing was hilarious!! :D

Trops- We agree, we are just saying things differently. Maybe my words weren't as well thought out, and more passion driven. We agree 100% about the young kids... they need to be taught, not graded. Never judge them over what they have or have not learned yet!! For the sports, you are right again... while they are young... up to the age of 7 would be great! We have leagues, even "high skilled" leagues here that don't keep score through the age of 10! Sports can teach a kid ALOT about their own character... many things can, but the competition, the hard work and practice, that's what it should be all about. I'm not saying label kids winners and losers... I'm just saying award hard work and dedication! To neglect to do that, so "soft skinned" kids (poor sports whose parents should teach them about falling down and getting back up) don't feel bad about not earning recognition is crazy in my opinion. Setting goals, working hard and acheiving them should be the focus. Those are lessons that can be learned elsewhere, but sports seem to highlight it. These lessons can be carried over into "regular" life, and they help keep kids focused and driven and SAFE. I have two rules for my kids when it comes to MOST THINGS IN LIFE... 1)TRY YOUR BEST and 2) HAVE FUN!! They haven't broken the rules yet ;) ;)

The PC thing.. well said!!! I feel the same way in addition to thinking all they are doing is changing the definitions of words!!

OK... on to more light hearted things! :D :D

Wednesday

AM Lower body workout... Damn good if I don't say so myself!! I think adding the jump ups has been a great idea! My legs are blasted at the end of the session! I thought I would end with a wall sit... due to the other excercises, I was able to do a 8 minute and 22 second sit! I'm going the wrong way with regards to this, but I know my workout is great! Hitting it from different angles kind of thing. If I want the long wall sit, I will need to do it at the start of my workout! I'll throw them first probably every two weeks from now on.

Eating... same foods as usual except dinner. I had chicken, egg plant and zuchinni pasta thrown with a little olive oil. Very good change.

On to tomorrow's Cardio!!! :)

Very athletic. Very Olympian. Makes ya feel powerful. Wow the supper sounds so good! You are kicking the shit out of your plan JZ.

Wow, nice job as usual! :hurray: That's it, I'm packing my bags this weekend and moving to Ohio so you can kick my ass into shape! ;)

Thanks Lilli! :) "FEEL", would be the key word in that sentence! :D Also, I'm learning ALOT as I go, thanks to many people here, and am always adjusting my "plan" after a trial period of a few weeks. Change, well at least variation, is good! Thanks for droppin' in, and stay warm! I hear Saskatchewan is beautiful this time of year!! :D Funny, but even with all the Hockey I played, I never made it their... fly over country I guess :D. I've been to Vancuver, Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, even to Prince Edward Island, but never to your "neighborhood".

Thanks Paula. :) Tough love right??!?!? You just need to "roll with the punches" in your situation too! You are EXTREMELY busy, but if you keep doing the small stuff every day, you will do great! Have a great day! :)

Very true JZ! I need to "tough love" my own ass and just get the workouts done... Its only an hour out of my day...I just sabotage myself cuz in the morning I tell myself that I'm too tired to get up so I'll do it at night and then night rolls around and I tell myself I'm too tired so I'll just "start tomorrow". I'm an idiot lol.

Meh, it's got it's charms but I like a hot climate. Yah we have produced some fine hockey players, Gordie Howe in the past and Ryan Getzlaf with Anaheim Ducks and Jarret Stoll with L.A. Kings today. Prolly a few more but I only watch play-offs & Stanley Cup now. Saskatchewan is a good place to fly over. LOL We don't have mountains, ocean, hills of any sort. The northern part is stunning but uninhabited. Best part of Skatchwan is the people. But I have a friend who's a film director from San Fransisco who tells me people are just a bit too friendly here. LOL I feel that. Grocery clerks, passers-by, bank tellers, all chatty.

It's a little hillbilly over here. I've never identified with them because I was raised in TO and Vancouver and originally born in Holland. My parents can speak several languages and are pretty astute about world events so I've always felt a bit snobbish. Give you an example, dating is a nightmare because I'm hard pressed to find a man that A) doesn't wear a fucking baseball cap and B) wears cologne. LMAO Do you sense bitterness?

Just human nature Paula! It takes effort to sideline that thinking! Practice makes perfect, right??? Also, Ditch that all or nothing thinking... that will freeze you up quicker than hell... well at least I know it did for me! Just make it habit... just part of your daily routine! :) I know it is simple, but true. Maybe that's what leads to people being so down on themselves... that it's so easy, but they are not doing it... but you know what... the PRINCIPLES are easy... actually DOING the work is not! It takes constant effort and thought, and can be extremely tiring, but that's what sets people apart... that rise to this and take it by the horns attitude! You have plenty of it... just plug into it and kick some serious butt!!

Wow Lilli, if I didn't have three kids and a good job, I'd head on up to Saskatchewan!!! I rarely wear baseball caps, and sometimes the old "navy" shower is the only one I get!! :biggrinjester: I would be a STUD up there!! ;) ;) :) :biggrinjester:

Still up with the wall sits, eh? :D

Sounds delicious! (uh, but I'm imagining fish instead :p)

Haha, sweet cardio enthusiasm--I've been sort of lazy about that...not in results, still running, just not pushing myself in running. No biggie, tonight is HIIT!

Thursday

Cardio day... jump roped for 46 minutes. I did not attempt to count today... feeling mentally lazy I guess... good workout though! After JR, I did some heavy bag work for 20 minutes. This workout is under rated... I really had a great workout!! :)

Eating was spot on again... doing great with the "nutrition" side of things! All protein reached, and calorie intake in check!!

Another good day... that's four this week... let's see what Mondays weigh in says!!

Hey JZ! I'm loving that workout, you must have been DRIPPING after 46 mins of skipping!! Holy crap! Also, I agree, the heavybag is really underrated. Even 10 minutes on that thing and I'm dying. If it's a hanging heavybag, a fun thing to do is make your arms completely straight and push it towards the wall, until it's sort of over your head with your legs straight and see how long you can hold it for. VERY HARD. You feel the burn (well, I did.)

Thanks Sara! Yep... drenched after that workout. Also, thanks for the "recomendation" about the "bag lift/hold"... I'll give it a go! Have a great one!! :)
