Just starting

Stats:
5'11
240 lbs
16 y/o

I am trying to cut fat around my thighs, butt, stomach, and chest. I don't want to become ripped, just slim and cut. What do you guys recommend I do to acheive this goal. I have a gym membership and can go whenever I want.
I know I should do cardio and lift weights, but in order to acheive my goal (200 lbs) what routine should I do?
 
EXCELLENT ADVICE, NEWF! Notice how the advice in that article is quite similar to the advice you hear coming from me. In fact, both of those guys (Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove) are frequent forumites over here if you want to ask them questions directly. In fact, Lou is one of the main moderators/forum leaders over there. You can get their book at Amazon, and I can't recommend it higher. In my mind, the best thing I have seen come along in a looooong time!
 
A lot of the things in that article seem silly to me. Most people aren't working out.. to live like a caveman or to be better prepared if stranded on an island. Of course people do crunches to look good.

I would put in some high intensity cardio for some fast weight loss, and do some base hypertrophy training to add some muscle to help you lose weight. I'd imagine your diet needs to be changed as well.
