Journey, Not A Destination

I'm more concerned about the cold getting me than anything else! My biggest fear when doing something like this is frost bite. I can't imagine getting it so bad where you're losing fingers or your face is turning black, yet, not being able to do a damn thing about it!

well just remember not to "thaw out" any areas you think you're getting frost bite in until you're definitely out of the cold completely

Yea... not fun.

I'll be making sure I'm more than prepared. Worse case scenario, I'll burn the 'weakest link' to generate heat for my survival.

Wow..

That's all I can say about the conversation I had with a family friend yesterday afternoon.

I ran into her out and about. I used to work for her husband doing construction years ago. She was always 'that one reallllllyyyy hot mom.' Still is to be honest. She always had a thicker bottom and thighs.

I guess this started bothering her b/c she told me she hired a personal trainer. The convo went something like:

Her: I'm in love with this trainer. He really gets me motivated and I lost a few lbs already.

Me: That's great, how long have you been working with him?

Her: A few weeks.

Me: What does he have you doing?

Her: Well, it's all circuit training b/c I'm only interested in toning up. He's a professional 'female body sculptor.' So no heavy lifting...

Me: A professional female body sculptor, huh?

Her: Yup... and he doesn't allow me to run b/c running will only make my legs fatter he taught me.

Me: Okay, okay... listen, you know I do this for a living so why would you not ask me for help? I wouldn't expect you to pay me or anything. I can't tolerate this level of absurdity your trainer is talking. You *really* need to learn to ask simple questions with your trainer; namely "why?"

For instance, why does lifting light weights tone my body. I would think higher weights would do more for my muscles?

Or how about this...

If running makes your legs fatter, how come marathon runners don't have the fattest legs of all the world?

Her: Steve, this guy, if you talked to him, you'd know that he really knows his stuff. Plus, I'm enjoying it so....

Me: Well I really have to be going... blah blah blah

Unfreakingbelievable.

One of the guys who is considering going on the trip with Gordy and I sent me this in my email today saying, "Are you fucking kidding me?"

that sounds like it would be a great trip....I think. I really would like to do some winter hiking but not at that level. Since i just started hiking, one of my friends said we should do Mt. Washington some time next year. I just have a hard time hiking a Mt that high and then seeing cars at the top. (although you wouldnt see any in the winter).

I hear you on the muscle training for a hike. I was fine climbing but the descent was a KILLER on the legs. Reading your stuff on here, im sure you will be in the shape you need to be.

Matt

Thanks Matt.

To be honest, the hike we do up there in NH doesn't present a lot of views of cars. The presidential traverse the time of year we're going will take days... maybe 3.

The top of Mt. Washington is the only place where you'll see cars and that's only a brief stint of the hike.

Last trip we did when we almost died from the cold and weather... by the time we made it to the top of Mt. W we had trashbags tied around our hands, necks and faces that we stole from a cabin we broke into in order to survive. Needless to say we looked like a train wreck. When we got to the top of Mt. W there were a bunch of city folk all nice and warm who drove up or rode the train up. They were shocked by the site of us and we ended up telling our story to a circle of people who couldn't believe it, lol.

That was actually a nice break from the hike to be honest.

:eek2: YOU'RE FUCKING CRAZY, STEVE!!!! :eek2:

Dude, that is HARDCORE. Aiight, whatevs, take some pictures, ok? LOL!!!

I don't do snow :p

Hey that's wack, WTF, trainers actually tell chicks stuff like that? Your friend's mom should go to a race and see how fat runners' legs are NOT. Well, actually, runners come in all shapes and sizes, but a larger precentage have nice, strong, firm legs. I'm as amazed as you are--you must have CRINGED.

"Hiya" :waving:

Some pretty cool comments left in my blog in response to the piece about Jared...

That was beautiful Steve, and a surprise for me. As I was reading it I thought that it had been written by my grand daughter, Erica. She too experienced the wonder of Jared. I met him once at her house and guess what, he was all smiles. Thank you.

There is not a day that goes by where Jared isn’t in my thoughts. What you wrote was amazing. The years i spent with JB will never fade from my mind.

Thank you Steve for the beautiful article on Jared. Thank you also for seeing Jared as we his Mother & Father DOES (not did). He will forever be alive in our hearts.

Your article has left me with tears in my eyes. I miss my brother something terrible and can’t begin to express the void his death has left. However, knowing that Jared ALWAYS lived life to the fullest leaves me with a great sense of peace. I am truly grateful for the beautiful article you So elequently wrote portraying Jared’s life. It is an article that will stick with me for life. God Bless You.

Thanks guys.

And writing isn't a natural gift for me actually. I used to be terrible at it. Still am. I need emotional fuel to get me going, but when it's there... I usually have some good stuff to spill out of the old noggin.

beautiful article steve. val opened my eyes today about my self-esteem and this article helped me chase away the doubts.

btw would it be possible to bother you one of these days to help me set up an exercise routine i can more or less do at home?

have a great day handsome :)

Glad to hear Lena. :)

Sure.

What are you currently doing? What do you have at your disposal? What are your goals? Any nagging injuries or limitations?

i was doing tae bo two times a week until last week. i have small problems with my foot (nothing serious), but i don't feel any pain while in the right shoes. i have to stop with tae bo classes because of work and i need to save a bit. i had some back problems years ago, but i know how to adjust the exercises (for example when doing abs exercises that include lifting lower parts of the body i put my hands underneath my back and such)

at home and waiting for regular use i have, an elliptical, 3lbs dumb bells and a large pilates ball, plus my neighborhood is mostly hills. i will do my best to at least go to gym or to one of the tae bo classes once a week.
i'm open to all suggestions :)

oh wait i forgot my goals:
- losing weight off course
- having more energy
- my biggest problem is my belly and my calfs. but defining all parts of the body would be nice :)
- being in better shape in general
