Journey, Not A Destination

Steve,
Question and dont ask why or where i came up with this but would like your opinion.

Why do you think people fail at losing weight? Is it motivation or lack of knowledge of what it takes. I dont mean they are not smart but so many times i'll ask a person, that is trying to lose wieght, how many calories they should eat a day and they have no idea. Just like to see what you have to say about this.

Thanks,

Matt

Well I'm a fan of this question. Why?

Because it was one of the questions I asked Lyle McDonald in an interview for my blog recently.

He goes into some pretty great commentary on the subject.

From my own experience, more often than not, people fail at weight management because of their minds more than their bodies. They're pre-wired to fail. They also have piss poor management of expectations and a complete lack of understanding of how much 'work' really needs to go into losing weight.

Combine these together and it's pretty easy to see why people fail.

That's why I truly believe that identifying and arranging your mind and thought processes is the most critical step in all this. In general, for most, autopilot doesn't work for a number of reasons.

I'd love to go deeper, but I think I'd like to wait until my interview is released, if you don't mind.

Well I have to decide if I want to release the blog before my website or not. Right now I'm leaning toward doing so. I also have one more question for Lyle to answer and than we're done.

I think you should release your blog... (but I'm hardly impartial i like reading what you write...

so what if it's got links to your site in it-- while it might not be open for business -it's not like it's ramshackle and falling down -what you've got is good stuff -you're just adding more to it...

Thanks Mal. I think if I release my blog, I will take down the site until it's got more meat to it... namely more vids. I wouldn't be comfortable releasing it now. But the blog I do think I will be releasing soon.

Hi Steve :D Releasing a blog/vlog, eh? Sounds great, and yes oh course you help lots of people!

Maybe you can help me. The back of my right knee is perturbing me at the moment. TWO MONTHS ago, I think I might have strained it kickboxing or whatever. I don't even recall when it happened, which means it wasn't sharp pain or anything. AND it does not bother me at all, normally. But...... when sit, spread my legs out to stretch over one, then the other, the left leg I can pretty much lay on, but the right leg I can only go half down before my muscle there hurts and doesn't allow me to stretch down. For two months it has been like this. I feel no pain whatsoever while running, weight training, or even Kickboxing, really, but I've lost the range of stretch that I had....and it has not improved at all in 2 months. I was trying Hanumanasa this morning
(Monkey pose, )
and of course I know I can't fully get into it, BUT the left side was almost there, the right side I could barely do the front splits AT ALL. What the hell can I do? I have not seen a specialist, and I looked on the internet, but cannot pinpoint what actual anatomy is screwed up.........

Hmm, that's tough and could be any number of things. If it's been that long, I would probably go see someone.

What do you do for flexibility? I know you do yoga. Anything else?

Do you know about self myofascial release?

Nothing else for flexibility, and I do not know about s.m.r., but I'll look into it. I haven't seen anyone cause my insurance sucks ass, and I just figured it would correct itself. But it hasn't.

I've talked about smr quite a bit here... let me dig up a post or two:

Here's a post I made about SMR in James' journal:

Here's a link to a free ebook from a respectable trainer that I recently posted:

I've been doing most of my SMR using a tennis ball and a med ball... I feel I'm able to isolate knots better.

And the fact is, what's wrong with you may very well be something that SMR can't fix. But knee pain, front or back, can be caused by tightness and/or knots found above or below the joint.

Thank you very much. I'm probably going to give myself another month, but I'm going to consciously work on the back of my knee, and attempt the SMR as well before I try to find a cheap way to get professional assistance for healing it, if needed. Hmmmm, I could try to mack on a chiropractor I suppose :D Juusssssssssssst kidding ;)

Haha, deep tissue massages are great for recovery and breaking up adhesions. That's really all you're doing with a foam roller, ball or whatever other instrument you choose.

James...

I don't know. I miss him. He sort of vanished. Hopefully he's doing okay though.

The best instrument would be the hands of some hot ho-boy, dammit, but I can probably make do with a foam thing. I bet they're expensive :(

I'm sure James is fine :) He might come crawling back....I did, Sunny did, etc.....

Sounds like you might have strained either your popliteus or plantaris muscle.

Also likely is you have injured your PCL. Although, this is less likely than the other two I mentioned. A quick test for PCL injurys is to sit on the floor and have someone gently push down right above your knee(distal end of femur) while lifting your foot at the ankle at the same time. If you feel pain in the back of the knee you have likely injured your PCL.

Thanks, T, I just sat down and tried that myself, and I felt no pain BUT, when I sit flat and spread both legs out, it already starts to feel uncomfortable, and as soon as I twist my torso to lean over the right leg, I can't really go any further....

Do you feel any pain down your hamstring? Or is only in the back of the knee?

Anyway, standing up straight on your left leg. Keep your right leg bent(off the floor) at the knee. Can you rotate your foot inward, toward your left leg?

Do you feel pain anywhere in that range of motion?
