Journey, Not A Destination

Yes, I did read it - thanks.
I'm going to start the end of next week, and start off slow, the way you suggested. My back is gradually getting better; I think in another 4 or 5 days it'll be back to normal.

Yeah, the 440 is a sprint that lasts 4 times longer than the human body's oxygen capacity.

WOW. I can't imagine sprinting that long. Well, some people sprint the 5K when they do it--which I probably will do next year at the Danville race. Ugh. Hey Tom, why not put a pic of you in your heyday?!?! Huh, huh??!

Ask, and ye shall receive! [hope you don't mind, Steve]. This is me in 11th grade, 1965.

Tom, that's a great photo! You'll be looking almost like that again when you're done, aren't you? :D

Sorry, Steve, couldn't resist the temptation.. And yes, you look great too..

Hey, Steve, another question:

At the end of Days 1 and 3 I want you to finish off with some body weight calisthenics. These will not be easy. It will be done in "giant set" fashion.... meaning you move from one exercise to the next without rest. This will bump up a nice energy expenditure. It will look like this:

BW = Body weight

BW Squats x 12
Lunges x 12 (total, so 6 each leg)
Split Squats x 12 (total, so 6 each leg)
Jump Squats x 12

When you say, "move from one exercise to the next", do you mean this:
1 Squat, 1 lunge, 1 split squat, 1 jump squat, repeat

or this:

12 squats, 12 lunges, 12 split squats, 12 jump squats

I assume it's the latter, but just wanted to make sure.

ps. Sorry for hijacking your thread -- won't happen again! :)

Hahahaha.

That's a great picture Tom. You were a STUD!! Keep it up and you'll be looking like that again in no time.

And there is no such thing as a hijack when it comes to this journal. :)

With regards to your question, the latter is correct.

I honestly don't remember.... I want to say mid 11s but I could be wrong. I wasnt really my sport. I played lacrosse at the same time, which was my sport.... so I never speed trained.

Steve, I haven't been able to find a good vid of a dumbbell Romanian Deadlift, which is one of the exercises in my new routing. Is a pretty good description of it, though?

Tom, just go to my "workout" stickie in the weight-loss through exercise thread and look on the second page at the stiff-leg deadlift. Pretty much the same exercise, even with a vid. Instead of holding a BB, hold DBs instead.

The description in your link is okay. The pic, not so much. He seems to be rounding his back a bit, which isn't good.

Just remember that it's not all about simply bending over. It's all about pushing your ass back against an imaginary wall. Naturally you will bend over, but it will be different.

Thanks, Steve. I'll take a look at that. I'm starting to think about the logistics of doing these as supersets in my gym, and it definitely will be easier to do the squat with a barbell and row with dumbbells together. Finding 2 olympic bars at once can be a problem when it's crowded in our gym. I'll have to carry the dumbbells about 50 yards to the power cage, but I'll just consider that another exercise, LOL.

Haha, do what works for you. Each gym environment is different and you will have to adapt the plan to meet your needs. I am, at many times, the ONLY person in the "free weight section" of my gym. It's like having my own personal hideaway. But I certainly understand how crowded gyms can get.

Good luck, and let me know if it ends up being too hectic. Hopefully not though, I am anxious to see what you think of this program.
