So a scary story about my trip home from the airport on Sunday.
I was driving Gordy (best friend) home and we got stuck behind this EXTREMELY slow driver. I am normally a law abiding citizen. However, Gordy had an appointment and being behind this slow driver would have certainly made him late since it is a no-passing, long, 2 lane road.
We stopped behind her at a red light. It was a light with 3 lane options. One to turn left, one to go straight, and yet another to turn right. Gordy begged me to get in the straight lane and turn left in front of her. I was seriously contemplating it, since she was driving no more than 20 mph.
Just when I was about to move up to the "straight lane," (I can't stress how close I was to cutting the wheel and going around her I was) the light turned green. Damn! I was too late.
Let me tell you. I am soooooo thankful that I did not do it. The lady was so slow to react to the green light. Thank goodness for her sake too. A car came barreling through the red light going no less than 70 mph. Had I listened to Gordy, the car would have plowed into my driver side door. Being in the car that I drive, I don't think there would have been much left of it, Gordy, or myself.
It seriously shook me up. I was one stupid mistake away from a terrible accident.
Crazy how simple decisions can have such profound impacts.
Thanks everyone. It is crazy to think about, for sure. If I had been first in line at the light, I would have pulled out a lot quicker than the slow driver did and I would have been hit too. The fragility of life is mind boggling. You rarely think about it, but when something happens that is just so darn close of a call, you are forced to.
It was a wake up call for me. Not so much of "don't do stupid things."
More on the lines of, live each day like it's your last. Treat everyone with respect, you don't know when it's the last time you will see them. Do something to improve every single day. I don't care if you read a book, go to the gym, quit smoking, just do something. When I go, I want to go out on top, knowing I milked life for what it is worth.
I've lost too many friends over the years unexpectedly - you really never do know when your last day will be.. mortality is there every single day... you have to do what you can for yourself and be satisfied with yourself.
the quote i get reminded of frequently - no one ever died - saying i should have worked at my job harder... enjoy life while you can...
oh Steve you are so wise....I'm really glad that everything turned out fine.
Did Gordy get to his appointment on time?
let me say, first of all - Thank God you were behind that slow driver.
this is definitely a wake up call - a sign that couldn't be stronger. i try to live life to the fullest, especially in last few months. i can barely recognize myself, its like that 16 year old came back inside of me and said no more running its party time lol...life is beautiful.

That is the kicker. Not even half a mile down the road, the driver turned. So I was one second away from death, just so I could get down the road a bit faster.
So yes, Gordy did get there in time.
STEVE...no SHORTCUTS. Wait, my child, allow your soul to grow......
