Journey, Not A Destination

It's great, Steve--did weights today but not a long session, unfortunately. Still staying solid, though--it's raining over here and therefore the season has started, so I'll be running a lot less and be in the gym more. Which is fine, time for the elliptical I guess. I haven't stepped on that thing since you said one doesn't have to incorprate cardio on their weight days, or at least, not at the same time of day. So normally I'd run one day, lift the next, do kickboxing, and so on--it was liberating to get rid of the elliptical time before my weights! On the best days, I run before work, and lift after, then do yoga--talk about sore! But that's rare.

Sounds like you are back on track Val!

I too run before work and lift in the evenings certain times of year.

Kimmie,
Trust me, barbell squats are the SHIT! I love em, makes me really strong in the hips, too--basically its a big move and works a lot of your body! AND it elevates your heartrate, too--some people get dizzy. I recently am squatting my goal weight (135 lbs). Here, I just took a picture of my butt--the pants I bought are very flattering, mind you--I have a HARD time with pants........a nightmare, shopping. My thighs are pretty big for my size in general.

The Power class is ONE hour of using a BAR with whatever weight you want to add, I usually put on 5 pounds or so. Then it's basically upper body with the bar, squats, lunges to music. It's pretty cool, and the music is what keeps me motivated, other than that I would hate this class. To me lifting weights is just boring, am I missing something???
Take a look at this link, this is what I'm talking about. The class is called Body Pump

Oh yea, we have that at our gym. I did it once as a joke, lol. Everyone was staring at me. :(

Lifting weights is 'boring' to some b/c they don't understand it. They think aerobic activities feel like they give them more bang for their buck b/c they get all sweaty, their hearts a racing, etc.

But what they don't understand is you can't use that same metric to measure the utility of resistance training. They are two different animals. Two different types of stress.

I'd focus on increasing the weight you lift each week or so in that body pump thingy majigger.

When I did the class, I didn't see one person squatting properly though, which is worrisome. Especially as loads increase.

You know, I never liked cardio/weights classes--for me, I need to dedicate an hour to straight weights, and I get in The Zone. In real life, men flirt with me, but in the weights room, they either look at me warily, compliment the amount of weights I do, or restlessly wait for me to be finished with something--they NEVER flirt, I think I look mean and businesslike when I'm lifting. Hey! It takes concentration/visualization!

Nice bootay!

Oh thanks, Steve, and you know, I credit some of it to you, thanks for recommending the heavy, free squats and deadlifts! :) See my lower back? It never used to be so firm-looking, I used to have much chubbier love handles before deadlifts (they're stil there, just the angle hides them).

:rotflmao: You're cute! Thanks for the compliment! But mind you, I have a hard time with pants size--like I'm in a size 9 pants right now, due to this ass and these runners' thighs. It takes a Big Woman to say, "Fuck my size, I'm healthy and this is a good size for me."

But if I can encourage just one woman to push herself and lift heavier or more often or bigger moves, I'm HAPPY!!! :D

Maybe I just need to find a partner to work weights with, maybe that would be more enjoyable. Your right I know there is a difference between the two, and maybe it is that weights are much harder and thus my mind goes in UH OH boring mode, I need to break away from that and just do it!! Thanks so much Steve, your such a STUD!! AND that gets to my next point. MAYBE that's why they were all staring at you. A LARGE BEEFY STUD MAN, in a measly power class. LOL LOL I only see maybe 3 guys in our class, and trust me, they all should be in there. LOL LOL I think one is 50. And I guess we have some good instructors in their, because I'll be the first to ADMIT, she came behind me and told me I was bending forward to much in my squats and she showed me the correct form and said I better becareful so I don't throw my back out. It only takes once, I'm really a good student. :)

OH this is funny, thanks to the fact that I have very little ass I wear a 9-10 now depending on the make of the pants. I have very long legs, not big anymore thanks to all the working out, but I have hips, thus the size 10. See it's weird to me, because your about 35 pounds lighter than me. UGGG I hate scales, I'm going to throw mine away soon, you watch!

Welcome.

I used to train with partners. But I finally stopped about a year ago. I just couldn't find a partner that was focused enough. Ideally you find someone who is 'better' than you. That way not only do they serve as a source of motivation, but also as an educator.

My training partners were always boobs. They'd take it seriously for a couple of months and right when things were getting good and we would be pushing into new territory in terms of strength, they'd bitch out.

Haha, if I were teaching the class I would have taken about 75% of the 'students' down to the weight room and showed them what they were missing.

That's good to hear.

One of the biggest problems I saw was lack of depth in their squats. Short changing the exercise by only going down a quarter of the way is not too good on the knees.

Oh no, don't do that! You make so much progress, we all LOVE hearing when the scale numbers drop for you! We all think you deserve it so much! We can't wait until you reach your goal!!! :D

What's in a size, really? You know what our problem is? That we don't tailor our own clothes. You know how much better we'd all look if we did that? Seriously! It makes a HUGE difference. Grrrrrrr and I HAVE a sewing machine, too. What a lazy bunny I am!

Steve, if only you knew how hard it is to find a lifting buddy for me. I've tried, but so many women just don't like it! The women at my gym who DO always say hi to me--but they have their own routine and stuff. I'm pretty shy sometimes for no reason, maybe I should get the guts to ask them on a weight date

You got it right, the HARDEST part is finding a good partner!! I had two of my friends sign up at my gym in February, both pooted out this summer, needless to say I don't let it stop me, I would miss it if I didn't go, plus I'm sure I wouldn't be down 25 lbs right now if it wasn't for my persistence, so I'll just hang in there and maybe I just need to make more friends within the weight room alone. Hmmmmmm, I'll have to try that. Val, to damn bad you don't live closer. SHI...... I hate that!

Okay, plus I think we practically highjacked Steve's diary. SORRY STEVE!! Well, I better get to work also. LOVE YOU GUYS!! Have a great weekend Steve, and VAL!! I'm going to do weights this weekend too, see I'll post progress on Monday, CHOW GUYS!
Kim

Ha! A weight date....

I can see it now. Me showing up to the gym with a box of chalk and a weight belt, asking some guy to be my weight date.

Sounds like a recipe for a bloody nose, lol! :p
