It Starts...

Mornin MissD! That breakfast looks yummy

Steel cut oats are in a more natural unprocessed state. Rolled oats have been steamed, toasted and rolled. So they lose a lot of the natural nutrients (as well as taste) Instant oatmeal is even worse, its pretty much the dust left over fom processing. If you can get steel cut, give them a try. I like them but I still buy old fashioned sometimes also.

Thanks Ed for the info. We had a bunch of instant oatmeal in the house so I was slowing trying to get rid of it. I have seen the steel cut oats at whole foods but didn't check the price, I will next time I make a trip. It seems recently breakfast has just been cereal (kashi) or an instant breakfast with frozen fruit blended in. I just don't have time in the morning... I suppose I could always make time.

I have the same problem. Its called being a lazy bastard. I have been just chugging a whey shake in the mornings be cause I need more protein. But now I notice my fiber is going down so I need to work on that. Back to oatmeal I guess. I will just have to get up a little earlier.

You could always add some psyllium seed to your protein for added fiber. Its hard to find a healthy balance without throwing something off.

September 8

Today is going much smoother than any part of last week. Although I am overwhelmed with A&P homework I feel much clamer than last week. I'm hoping it holds.

I haven't really made a plan for this week. Step and I decided that because of my schedule on Mondays that it would be our rest day. I dont get out of class until 6 and would have put in 7 hours at work and then another 3 at school. Most likely I will be pretty tired. So now we just have to figure out what days we want to strength train and which days we want to run.

I myself got out of bed this morning and ran, just because I felt like I needed to. I only did a mile and it was my best time on the mill... well honestly I haven't ran distance on the mill only intervals and the last time I tried to run a mile it took me 20 mins because I walked so much. I did a mile this morning in just under 13 mins. Not a huge feat for most, but I was proud of myself. It truly showed my progress and that I CAN do this. Step said my legs are really looking thin!! Lets hope so!!

Food so far has been great and I'm going for my third glass of water now (my cup holds 16 oz so Ive had 32 oz so far!) I am currently finishing up some A&P homework and then will work on a plan for the week as far as exercise goes. Step and I did sit down and make a menu and grocery list as always. Tonight is grilled pork chops with wild rice and veggies!! We also bought a bunch of melon, so that will be desert!

Today's Eats

Breakfast:
Instant Breakfast w/FF milk and frozen strawberries

AM Snack:
vanilla yogurt
lg banana

Total Cals: 471

That's all for now.. back to connective tissues.... UGH!

Good job on the tread mill. I have a bear of a time keeping it going on a tread mill. On the road I can go for miles, but on the tread mill I'm shot in no time.

Steel cut oats are so much more tasty in my opinion. More earthy, which I like, but they take a long time to cook. For the trouble I'll usually make old fashioned rolled oats.

Thanks! I've found it easier to run outside, maybe because I feel like I'm getting somewhere. When I'm on the mill I find myself staring at my distance and speed. I've tried covering them up but it doesnt help.

Good to know about the cooking time, I still want to try them, but I haven't had oatmal in a long time... maybe tomorrow I'll have some old fashioned if I have time!!

Well I am a nurtition major, but I still have 2 years left in my degree.... And I have learned a general overview of the macro and micro-nurtients your body needs as well as how your body metabolizes foods...

Anyway, hopefully that gives you all an idea of what I am eating! Nutrition is essential to a healthy being!

Hey I thought I was subscribed to your thread!! I didn't know you were a Nutritionist in training, ALL RIGHT!!! :hurray:

I'm constantly wanting to be in Nutrition Training. I always try to read and learn things from people, magazines, and health food stores: for example, I learned that coconut water is a superior electrolyte source and better than most sports drinks.

I guess I'm lucky because my employer has the steel cut oatmeal cooked and waiting for me when I get in each morning. They also have all the toppings out ready to spoon on. I switch back and forth between oatmeal and the egg station. At the egg station I order an egg white scramble w/tomatoes, onions, asparagus, chicken sausage, and a sprinkle of cheese on top. I'm super lazy when it comes to cooking so I'm glad my work cooks for me. :)

I do have to admit though that the steel cut oats taste much better than instant. :)

Same here! I initially was going for a degree in Engineering, but it just didn't fit me. Once I switched I was sooo much happier, but doing what you do by reading outside sources is basically how you learn. I'm not very far into my program and haven't learned anything that I didn't already know from outside reading...

I did not know that about coconut water!! I will have to check that out! :coolgleamA:

Ooo you are lucky! And the fact that its free too!! I bet you save tons of both money and time!! How long have you worked for Google anyway?

I sometimes feel like I spend far too much time thinking about and preparing meals... but its essential to good health... IMO anyway.

This is my 2nd tour of duty at Google. Been here since April this time :) I do save money and I actually eat healthier too. Today I had fresh fish, green beans, and a spinach salad. It's one of the perks that makes this job so much fun....and because I hate to cook I'm that much happier!!

That's awesome, I really think all big corporations should take a hint from what Google offers to their employees. The office I work in is tiny and the owner is a large man who loves food and drink... so when we do have office "parties" the food is less than appealing. If it weren't for me, fruits and veggies would be completely absent.

Evening Check In:

Its getting close to 9 and I still have a bit of studying to do, but its for my nutrition class so I should be just fine.

Today was a great start to the week. I exercised this morning, ate good all day, drank plenty of water, and was productive at home. Stephen made dinner, which I was grateful for. There was a chicken breast left over from last night to cook as well as 2 pork chops, he grilled them all perfectly... made some rice and veggies... and bam dinner was served! My plate was mostly veggies though, I just wasn't in the mood for food, but I did eat!

I haven't had the chance to put together any kind of exercise plan for the week, but I plan to get out of bed again tomrrow and do something... maybe a video... or I might even run again. I am going to foam roll and stretch real good tonight before bed.

Today's Final Eats

Lunch:
Spinach salad w/walnuts, feta cheese, and tomatoes
Ham sandwich
Md orange

PM Snack
1/2 c salsa
9 tortilla chips (or 1 serving)
100 cal pudding cup

Dinner:
1 c broccoli
1/2 c wild rice
1/2 med chicken breast

Grand Daily Total: 1562

I should get another 100 cals in before bed, so I might have a hot tea with milk or some melon... or both.

I am still having a hard time getting all my cals in; but like tonight I just wasn't that hungry. Hopefully tomorrow will prove to be better!

That's all for now!

I have a problem getting cals in sometimes to. Happened last night actually. Here is what I did
1 cup 1% milk
1/2 banana
2 tbs natural PB
2 scoops chocolate whey
1 square dark chocolate (shaved or it will just get stuck in the bottome of blender)
handful of ice

Thats my favorite shake "meal" its flippin delicious. That is 602 calories. Sometimes I make half of one or just use 1 scoop of whey which shaves 100 calories. That gives me a 600, 500, 300 calorie shake depending on what I need. Less than that I will just have nuts or fruit. That shake has about 70 grams of protein. It tastes like sin but is really good for you.
