It Starts...

Yeah I thought mtn biking would be easier, but you really have to know how to control your bike... I can't ever seem to keep my front tire on track! But its sooo fun, especially once you get the nerve to let off the breaks a little and gain some speed!

With mountain biking speed is your best friend and biggest enemy. You have better control when you are really moving and it helps keep you on the line and getting over the obstacles. It also hurts a lot more when you wipe out. :biggrinjester: I need to get out again. I think it's been a month since I've ridden.

I started pre-training for a half marathon about 2 months ago (I am not a runner at all!!), and recently its been really bothering me when I run, typically 2 miles into a 3.5 mile run. I have done some research for stretches and they seem to help.. I've also used heat to ease the soreness.

My favorite stretch for the hip flexor is:

But I think what really helped my flexors was foam rolling. If you're not doing that, I highly suggest it. If you aren't familiar with what it is or does, do a search for self myofascial release. I actually had success with a foam roller and a lacrosse ball.

I've definitely had my fair share of crashed. Do you wear a helmet?

Just throwing my two cents here, but anyone who goes mountain biking without a helmet is a frikin idiot. I understand that some people ride on the road and have never had a crash might think that a helmet is optional, but with mountain biking it's a way different story. I'm done preaching for now, but just till I find that someone is not wearing a helmet. :smash:

Yes this is the stretch I have been doing twice daily. I have a foam roller, but haven't used it for this problem... But I will tonight. We are doing the loop again so I'm sure I will be sore.

Yes I have a helmet! I pruchased a new bike this spring and Step bought us both helmets!

When I first started I didn't have one and thought they were for dorks! But I understand now that its improtant to wear one and they aren't as terrible looking as I thought... I acutally look kinda cute!

Lunchtime check in!

Soooo my first class wasn't bad. Its Microbiology for health related sciences. The professor said "I won't lie to you this class is hard, but has an 85% pass rate." So I think I will be okay. She seems pretty upforward about her expectations yet laid back! Hopefully its not an overload!

I just put my lunch into fitday and I realized that I am going to have a problem getting all my cals in (as if I don't already have this problem) while in school. I should have had a snack around 10, which is when I am in class so I will have to tote one with me next time and water... I forgot my water bottle and wished I had it. I just stuffed my face seemingly and hopefully can get a snack in before my afternoon lab.

Campus was crawling with people, almost to the point where I had to dismount my bike, but I was able to creep through. TJ and her pup Titus ran along side of me on my way in and they kinda cleared the way for me, but I still almost ran over a few people. Oh well!!!

So I head off to class here in another hour and a half, this going back and fourth is going to suck... maybe taking the whole day off work is a better idea.

Lunch Eats

Ham and Turkey sandy on wheat w/ff cheese & mustard
1 cup baby carrots
1 banana
1 orange
lots of water
Total: 419 cals
And I feel stuffed, but I needed to get the cals in.... ugh!

Ha ha yeah I always miss school during the summer. I am glad to be back, I feel more like me when I get to use my brain daily. :)

Wow, you're actually one of those peeps who use your brain daily?

That's rare.

:p

What I miss about college the most is the liveliness. I mean the learning was fantastic too but I continue to educate myself every single day now so I don't really miss that much. Or I should say it's tough to miss what you still have... but it was nice being spoon fed some of the more complex things instead of self-teaching.

Ha, well not typically when I'm not in school. My current job drains my brain... but when I'm in school I get to "pump it up" so to speak....

I know what you mean about the liveliness... campus was hoppn' today. Lots of local radio stations doing giveaways and vendors out... I didn't get to spend much time socializing because I had to go back to work... such as life...

Evening check in....

So my A&P lab is going to be pretty intense. Lots of terms to memorize, which I hate, but apparently its that kind of course in general.

Step and I did NOT do the loop tonight. Neither of us slept very well last night and were pretty beat from our day... so we decided to just relax and play catch up tomorrow. I am going to stretch before going to bed.

So I am going to have trouble getting cals in, I came home today and whipped up a soy protein shake with frozen strawberries... it hit the spot... it was wicked hot out today and I was beat... the frozeness going down was just what I needed.

I made pork fajitas for dinner, they turned out pretty tasty. We were going to just grill the chops but I wanted to do something different so I sliced them thin threw them in a pan with peppers and onions... and bam! And with that my cals for the day were met and I am still 500 cals in the deficit! Plus I was more active today because of riding my bike too and from campus and walking around... that has to be the best part of having a pretty big campus... I get to use my legs!

Here is a few pics from our biking adventure on Saturday. The first is at the beginning of the ride and then the other 2 are at the top of the little mountain we climbed... in the second pic I am standing where the trail heads back down....

Hey there,

Great job in getting all that extra exercise in. Especially being able to ride your bike to and from school, your set :)

A/P classes and labs were hard for me. I had to retake my anatomy and physiology both... Just so much information to try to process in an average semester. Flashcards were definitely my friend when I finally passed those classes.

I took an A&P bio class a couple semesters ago. I don't know if your tests will include identification (from models or samples), but mine did. What really saved me was taking pictures of the models, printing the pictures, and then labeling everything with and relevant notes beneath the label. Also, when I ate or performed some other identifiable physiological activity, I mentally went through all the steps that my body would perform to process the food (or attack the infection - whatever.)

Good luck!

Yessss, it was a beautiful day for a ride and we left early enough that it wasn't too hot. That was the first time I had been on that trail and even though it was brutal I loved it because of the scenery!!!

We are planning another ride or hike this weekend. We have been considering taking our bikes up the Sandia ski lift and then riding up top and then take the trail down... The whole trail up the mountain and down is called "king of the mtn" mostly because you gain several thousand vertical feet!!! Which is why I would rather go down then up!!! Lets just hope it works out!!

Hello Handsome! I am soo glad that school is back in just because I get to ride my bike daily!! I feel like I have more energy already and its only the second day.

I've heard so many bad things about the A&P courses and I'm kinda scared. I have used flash cards to get through chemistry and hopefully they will help me with this course. But it already seems like overload. Since my lab is Monday we did 2 labs in a very short period of time and I didn't even have my manual yet... So I'm already feeling overwhelmed... and the lecture is web based so I only have class once a week... I will most likely have to really bust my butt to score high... But I'm trying to stay positive about it.

The TA suggested that the entire course is based upon memorization and they gave us a website that has all the pics and things we need to study and I plan to use them as well as flashcards....

Thanks for the good wishes!

August 26

Evening check in. Today went better than yesterday as far as getting my cals in. I remembered to take both a snack and a water bottle with me.

My Nurt 344 class is... well I don't know yet. The professor is organized which is always a plus, but she wasn't very clear as far as expectations. This whole course is about the energy nutrients (macros) and how they are digested, absorbed, converted.. etc... Today we just reviewed the history of Nutrition and looked at the different food pyramids from around the world.

My Psy class is a whole other ball of wax... first off there are over 600 students, most of them being freshmen (yeah its a 100 level course so that was expected). I was hoping for this to be my "easy" class for the semester, buuuuut looks like its very labor intensive. Its another web inhanced class in which we will spend upwards of 6 hours a week doing assignments and quizes online... Plus we will have 11 exams throughout the course... Exam 1 is THIS THURSDAY!!! Yeah, not looking forward to that, but I am sure when its all said and done I will finish with an A... I'm just complaining because its more work than I expected.

On the plus side, I saved close to $200 by buying my books online... now if they would just get here before the weeks end that would be great!!

Ummmm, I was pretty tired when I got home from work and pretty much passed out. I woke up around 7 and started dinner... I was hoping to get a workout in... but I'm just too tired. I did get an ab workout in the morning (hip hop abs: ab sculpt 25 mins) so at least I did something!! Hopefully I won't be as tired next week... I can't let school derail my exercise efforts!! I was doing soooo good. The plan is to get a fore limb workout in tomorrow morning and either the loop or intervals tomorrow evening. Lets hope I'm not too tired!

Thats all for now... I'm going to go pick up the kitchen and head off to bed.

Night Night
