It Starts...

I agree with Sam. If I recall correctly you shouldn't go below 22points no matter what weight you are. Also, if you are exercising heavily you should eat more to make up that deficit. Plus the 30+ "extra points" are designed to be eaten each week. So you were totally under eating...don't know how you did it! You should have been close to 28-30points per day.

Have you watched biggest loser? There are weeks when the contestants try to lose more weight by skipping meals and it backfires every time. Their weight loss stalls and they are so confused because they work out for hours every day. Just goes to show that your body needs the right amount of calories so it doesn't shut down on you!

Good luck w/the counting calories. I don't have the time or patience for it. I'm sure it works as you are holding yourself accountable and can really focus in on how many calories you need to cut in order to lose weight.

I replied to your hip flexor question in my diary, but yes, I suffer from this too. It normally is from pushing myself harder than I normally do. Make sure to do some good exercises to stretch those out. My pain is more of like a sore muscle ache and usually fades within a day or so. I wouldn't worry too much unless it is a constant pain that doesn't go away.

You'll notice all kinds of new pains as you run further and further. I for example have an ankle injury that came about all the sudden when I ran 20 miles in one weekend...it's our body's way of saying "SLOW DOWN". LOL Listen to it!! If it hurts, something might be wrong...ease up. :)

I am really interested to see if eating more will boost my weight loss. And fitday really does make it easy, I would say as easy as figuring points. I don't know how I did it either, but I have the problem of under eating rather than over eating, but its nice to feel "full" after a meal and not still hungry. But it has done a trip on my mind... eat more = weight loss... doesn't make sense, but as far as how many cals my body is burning it does... I just have to change my thinking...

And yes I love the biggest looser.... and its crazy that some of the contestants think they can get away with eating only 500 cals a day plus exercise as much as they do... I would pass out!!!

Thanks for the hip flexor info. Its much better tonight than it was yesterday. And I know to listen to my body, I don't want to risk a serious injury that will derail all my efforts... and running is a slow progression.

Sam:Thanks for stopping by! I hope you have a good workout tonight!! :)

August 21

So I am realizing that 1600-1700 cals is alot of food and I need to balance better so that when dinner comes around I don't have 1000 cals left to eat. But I think this is working! When we got home from our trip I weighed and the scale said 143.2 and I yelled at it because I was sooo sure that was wrong, so I weighed several more times and got an average of 144, which again seemed crazy. But after getting back to eating both sunday and monday with the points system the scale when back up between 146 and 147... and I weighed this morning to find the scale again at 144.5!! I just hope to see this number go down more within the next few weeks... But I am also interested in my measurements. I plan to get in more strenght training than the past few months and from previous experience thats when my body really shows improvment... which is what I want!!!

Okay enough ranting. I ran 1/4 mile intervals last night for 3 miles. Felt really good, I caught myself smiling a few times... Guess I was enjoying myself. After I got off the tredmill Stepeh felt the need to get on... and he ran 4 miles at a 10:30/mile pace. Before he moved here with me he was running 8 min miles... but like 2 weeks after he moved here he shattered his wrist and was out of commission for the rest of the year and didn't get back into running till Febuary of this year and hasn't been very consistant... but since I have set a goal to run a 1/2 marathon he has felt the need to keep up with me or just ahead of me as it seems. Which makes me happy, having him beside me and supporting me has made a tremendous difference in my motivation.

Okay again I'll stop ranting.

Today's Eats
Breakfast:
Instant Breakfast w/FF milk

Am Snack:
Coffee w/cream and sugar
1/2 bagel with blackberry jam
Note: I am trying to get more cals in during the day, which is the reason for the bagel and jam as a snack... but it was yummy and boarderline too much.

Thats all!!

So Amanda got me thinking about my own class schedule for this semester and I thought I would show you what I'm up against this semster.

Nurtition 344: Energy Nutrients in Human Nurtition
Biology 239L: Mircobiology for Health Related Sciences
Biology 237: Human A&P I
Biology 247L: Human A&P Lab I
Psychology 105: General Psychology

I am most looking forward to the Human A&P courses, the lab is a cadiver lab which is both scary and exciting! I am hoping to learn tons about the body!

Your schedule defintely sounds hefty! How many credits are you taking this semester--Im stupid and loaded my plate up with 17 credits, but Im paranoid that its going to take me longer than 4 years (even though I know it wont) to graduate. Psychology is a lot of fun, youll really like it, and I took Microbiology last year and I had no problem with it! But A & P was a rough class, but Im sure if you like it and stick to it you'll breeze right through it! Our professor was really tough, and you defintely do learn A TON about the body but our labs were super intensive as well as our exams, all I reccomend is listening and studying heavily for the tests!

This semester Im taking (Just in case you were wondering lol!)
BUMGT 304: Principles of Managment
Chem 201: Organic chemistry
Engl 388: Writing Multimedia
HDFS 115 (for my minor): Family life issues
FN 320: Maternal and Child Nutrition
PE 120 (Minor again): Self Paced Personal Fitness

Its a total of 14 creadit hours and I will work 27 hours a week so its a pretty heffty load, but I took 17 hours last semester and worked 25 hours and manage to keep my gpa above 3.0 so I was happy.

I did a little research about my A&P professor and looks like he is tough becuase his teaching is sooo poor, but I'm really good about studying and keeping up on my readings and what not. I am unsure about my psy class only because its HUGE... the room its in holds over 800 people and I'm sure it will be loaded and with a class size that big you can't ask questions and there isnt much class discussion only lecture... But I am keeping an open mind about it.

You can handel 17 hours, it seems like alot but as long as you manage your time you will be fine! Organic chem is tons of fun! I took and intergrated o-chem/biochem course last semester and LOVED it!

What University are you studying at? I'm at the University of New Mexico. I have a degree in computer drafting and design from a private college and then went to UNM for engineering... but its not my cup of tea so I changed my major 4 semesters in... so with doing that I will graduate in 5 years... The Fall of 2010!! Only 5 semesters away!!!

MissDFitt!

I totally hear you on the work thing, I have 3 jobs up at school (about 25 hours a week) and sometimes it defintely is a tough class load, Im sure you'll do awesome!

Im glad to hear that you like OChem because at my university it has a reputation of being the worst class to take ever lol. I am actually enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Our classes sound no where near as big as yours! My Pscyh class was probably about 150 students max and thats considered a huge class to our normal classes (which are around 20-35 people)

But ive been able to keep about a consistent 3.5 GPA since Ive been in school and hopefully Ochem wont ruin it for me haha! Do you have to take advanced physiology? I am dreading that class as well, its the next class after A & P and it also has quite a bad reuptation at our school for kicking peoples butts..:willy_nilly:

Heres the thing with organic chemistry. It's is very much based on memory. You need to memorize prefixes and suffixes like woah, and on top of that you need to memorize the structure, or active group that corresponds to that prefix/suffix AND sometimes even the location of the group on the molecule. Also memorizing reactions and reagents and stuff. A different reagent will forn a completely different reaction. And trust me, there are a lot of reactions haha. It's a tough class and many people that I know hate it too, but if you have a good memory then it's a sinch. I have taken organic chem and advanced organic chem and I passed them both the first time. In the adv ochem they introduce alpha/beta/gamma prefixes. Wonderful eh? haha

Yeah I've heard that ochem is rough no matter where you take it... but for me it was easier to understand than gen chem... But Amanda is right there is alot of info you have to remember so flash cards will be your best friends!!

Thats awesome that your keeping a high gpa. I am happy as long as I keep mine above 3.0 and it is. I am shooting for a 4.0 this semester, but A&P could be my downfall.

I don't have to take physiology... at least not for my nutrition... but possibly for the exercise science.. Ill look into it!

August 22

I am officially throwing the scale out the window as of this morning! Since I set a goal to loose 7 lbs I have become OBSESSED with weighing myself... and its NOT healthy for me because I stress easily (as we all know). So I have decided to not weigh until my birthday or even after that.

Okay now with that out of the way... So last night I got home from work and just vegged for a bit... I was super unmotivated to do anything. So Step decided that we needed to get out of the house and go have dinner somewhere... and I was game only because I was pretty bored. So we went to a gormet pizza place... split a small pizza and caesar salad... then went to the mall and walked around for a bit... then went to DQ for ice cream... we split a med butterfinger blizzard... I would say Step ate most of it... or maybe thats just wishful thinking. So yesterday I was about even as far as cals go and it was hard to put that into fitday because the pizza was not your typically HEAVY pizza... it was on a super thin crust with little cheese and sauce... and same for the salad. So lots of eating yesterday and zero exercise... but ya know thats okay too, tonight is the loop and tomorrow is mountain biking so I'm content!

How often are you weighing yourself? If I step on the scale and don't like what I see, it can mess up my whole day. A lot of the literature says to weigh yourself once a week - or once a month if you can bear the suspense.

I put my scale on the opposite side of the house. Out of sight, out of mind so I can focus on eating and exercising. If your house is tiny, put it someplace nonsensical so it's a pain in the butt to drag out. Maybe under some pots and pans or in the back of a closet . . .

I was weighing every time I went into the bathroom... so several times a day!! It typcially just sits out... easy access. I jumped on this morning for Friday weigh in, but I'm going to hide it away until after the 1st.

I think my biggest problem was setting a weight goal... I typically set fitness goals but I got in my head that I want to be down to 140 by Sept 13 (my birthday) and its become a huge obession... so I think I'll stick to setting fitness goals instead!!

Thanks for the tips. I might just put it underneath something heavy so that I dont want to use the energy to get it out!!! :ack2:

Hi

Wow, you call Stephen Step?

That's what a few girls back in highschool used to call me, lol. Never heard anyone else use that before.

August 25

Fall semester finally begins!! I am both excited and a little nervous. I hated school when I was younger and used to make myself sick so that I wouldnt have to go and the anxiety still bothers me today... I will be fine once I am acutally in class.

I had a great weekend!! Step and I ran the loop Friday evening... He made me run the whole thing and I died. My hip flexor was killing me about 1/2 way through, but he wouldnt let me walk... so I pushed through. Over all it was a good run. I stretched really good which helped.

Satruday morning we got up and out of the house to hit a mtn bike trail. We haven't been out since the 4th of July and even though I am currently in pretty good shape, mtn biking still kills me. We did a 7.5 mile loop that took us about 3 hours to complete. It was brutal to say the least. The whole first half the the trail was uphill and rocky... needless to say I bike hiked most of the way... but Step did too which made me feel better. You dont only have to be in great shape but you have to have the skills to climb up over the rocks and its not as easy as it looks. But I am happy to say that I am waaaay better than I was 2 years ago when TJ and I started doing trails. The second half of the ride was all downhill, but that didnt make it any easier, on one side you have a huge drop off and the trail itself was pretty narrow so I was going VEEERRRY slow.. I'm chicken when it comes to flying downhill. Overall we had a good time and burned tons of cals which was a great bonus!

Yesterday we were very productive at home getting chores done and what not. We also took my beater bike over to TJ's so that I can ride it to campus. The three of us cruised around campus a bit. Just a nice slow ride. Yesterday was both productive and kick back. Step was happy that we got as much done as we did. Usually we do NOTHING on the weekends, but I think since we have been running together weekly it has boosted our overall energy and motivation to get off our butts!!

And that was the low down for my weekend. Today I have mirco-biology lecture, and A&P lab... plus 5 hours here at work... so a full day, but it will go veerrry quickly!!

Today's Eats:

1 cup coffee
1 tbsp creamer
1 lump sugar
1/2 bagel
1 motts applesauce cup
Total: 251 cals

I will be up and about today so I figured 1/2 a bagel wouldnt kill me this morning.

And that's all for now!

Sounds like an excellent weekend! What's wrong with the hip flexor?

Mountain biking is waayyy tough. I've done it a number of times and while it's a thrill, it's also taxing! I remember when I first started, I watched a few guys go downhill as fast as they could, no brakes, hopping over stones and logs.

I was like, "No F-ing way am I doing that."

I finally worked up the courage and it's definitely a blast. We have some amazing trails (best on the east coast) near by.

Good luck this semester! Hope you learn a lot.

I started pre-training for a half marathon about 2 months ago (I am not a runner at all!!), and recently its been really bothering me when I run, typically 2 miles into a 3.5 mile run. I have done some research for stretches and they seem to help.. I've also used heat to ease the soreness.

Yeah I thought mtn biking would be easier, but you really have to know how to control your bike... I can't ever seem to keep my front tire on track! But its sooo fun, especially once you get the nerve to let off the breaks a little and gain some speed!

Thanks for the luck! I hope to do well!
