Next time someone says that, tell them to produce a peer-reviewed study that has a control group in it that backs up that claim.
Considering whey is a bi-product of milk, it seems highly unlikely and nearly impossible that mixing milk and protein together would hamper the absorption of anything. And if this is true, then the protein that is in the milk you drink wouldn't be absorbed either.
Slow/fast, whatever. I've tryed drinking a whey shake in water after workouts for 2 months. Then I switched to milk mixed with yogurt, and I noticed better results with the casein, I knew this because of quicker recovery periods.

Although like abear said, there are some people who cant digest it... but most likely you're not one of them.
