Say you bike 25 miles three times a week. You hit some a few good hills everyonce in a while and try and keep your speed up. I have 9 hills on my ride that are not real big but I have to stand and really pumped but always make it.

Is this as good as one hour on a treadmill with a few inclines as well running about 5.8. I usually run pretty hard on the inclines for about 10 minutes then back down to straight out run. Any inputs on this and if I added a little weight to my bike would that burn more calories. Thanks...........m :D

Hi, Marty.

I guess it depends on your point of view. Usually HIIT is a cardio program that is broken down to about 30 seond intervals. So it might look like this-
30 seconds jogging
30 seconds sprinting
30 seconds jogging
30 seconds sprinting.

Interval training (not High Intensity) can be something like this-

5 minutes jogging
3 minutes fast run
5 minutes jogging
3 minutes fast run

The difference between HIIT and regular interval training is that in HIIT you shouldn't really be able to do more than 30 seconds of your highest intensity level. Hope I am making sense...lol

Biking up hills and then not, then up hills, then not is a form of interval training, but I wouldn't think of it as HIIT.

I don't know if this is "as good" as being on a treadmill for an hour because I don't know what your heart rate is on the treadmill -vs- your bike trips. My humble opinion...stick with a variety of cardio workouts...biking, treadmill, HIIT and that's a good plan.

Thanks lynn I plan to bike until mother natures has other ideas. Although I can ride my stationary bike inside not many hills in my living room LOL :D

My heart monitor on my treadmill is not real accurate I start at 82 and get my rate up to around 158-166. At the docs it's about 58 resting unless of course that little red head nurse walks by LOL.. I guess a heart rate monitor is one my next want list After a rower of course LOL. My wife already complains that I've turn the living room into a gym :D

My plan next year is to build a room off my bedroom strictly for working out ;) .
Thanks for your help.........m :D
