[insert witty title here]

I just wanted to give a really quick update and you guys know that I finished my 5K race this morning! I feel wonderful :)

My official time was 30 Minutes and 19 Seconds. (I'm a little confused by this because I crossed the finish line at 30 minutes 2 seconds... but whatever :) )

I will write more about my experience when I have a little more time!

oh snap! :gnorsi:

GOOD STUFF! you said you hoped to do in 30 to 32 mins and managed to do it in exactly that! wow, big congratulations are in order.:cheers2:

Race for Our Heroes - 5K Run

My 5K started at 9am in downtown Raleigh, NC. I live about 45 minutes away, so the family and I woke up around 6:15 in order to get everything together. After taking advice from some friends that are runners I ate breakfast around 6:30. Had one egg with cheese on an english muffin. It seemed to sit pretty well on my stomach, and we finally hit the road around 7:15am.

I got to the race and tons of people were already there. I proudly wore my new shirt that I got with the registration, along with my racing bib, number 244. I got my chip, which gives you an accurate time and hooks onto your shoe laces. I knew I needed to warm-up but was unsure of how to, I usually just hit the trail after a short 5 minute walk; and, once you are at the starting line it is very crowded and hard to do anything.

My goal times for the 3 miles were: 10 minutes, 10 minutes, 9 minutes. This would put me in around 29-30 minutes.

3-2-1 START

Everyone took off really fast from the start, and it didn't help that it started downhill, which made everyone go even faster. Compared to the others I felt like I was going REALLY slow. People were passing me on both sides, but I really tried to keep a slow-ish pace so that I wouldn't run out of energy. The course description said "no hills; only slight inclines"... no hills my ass! This was the hillest race I've every been on, and at no point was it flat. It was up and down, up and down the whole way. As I approached the first mile marker I heard one of the volunteers calling out times.

"8:40"

WHAAT!!! I ran the first mile in 8 minutes and 40 seconds.... no wonder I already felt so tired! I instantly tried to slow my pace and let me heart slow down.

I started to worry about making it to the finish line. I felt dead, with the hills and the rushed pace I just couldn't push anymore. I came to another hill and started walking. I gave myself 30 seconds to 'rest' and make it up the hill. As soon as I hit the top I ran again and pushed until the next hills. Walked again. Ran again... but this time I ran until the end. I came up on the last stretch, about 6 blocks. My body wanted to stop, but I kept going and had a burst of energy right at the end. I saw my wife and kids there, holding up signs that said "WE LOVE YOU," and "GOOD LUCK DAD." It was so cute and really made all of my hard work worth it!

When I was finally able to stop I was flooded with emotion and walked with my family over to the grass... where I layed for a while and relaxed. It was wonderful; a HUGE feeling of acomplishment and pride... in myself!

My official time was 30 minutes 19 seconds; and that included two short walks! I am really happy.

-------------------------------------------

On a separate note I found a 10k. It is on October 11 in Disney World! I am going to take my family down and make a long weekend of it. I am going to start training next week (will post my training schedule once I find a good one). I'm not pushing for a specific time on this race, just to finish without stopping or walking.

I'm also doing another 5K race on Jun 13, 2009. This time around I would really like to get a sub-30 minute time! This 5K should be easier since I will be in the middle of training for a 10k, we'll see.

:) :party::party:

I learned from this race that I have several things to work on for my next race.

1. I need to workout on hilly courses, because most road races are not flat (like my beloved trail near work)
2. I need to practice running in the morning to get use to my energy level at a differnt time of the day. It definitely felt different than running in the afternoon.
3. I need to find a better way to pace myself within a 1-mile distance. Going so fast on the first mile really hurt my time and pace at the end of the race.
4. When running, even for practice, I need to start at a comfortable pace and speed up towards the end... not the other way around.

haha, love the last picture!

Thats awesome you did it in a little over 30mins. If I ever attempted to run 3 miles I'd finish like 4 hrs later :D

Woo for Disney! Exercise, good causes, and family fun, best of all three worlds!

oh yeah, that last pic is hilarious! by the way i just did a quick glance at your before pic again, and then the one where your about to start the marathon....it's amazing because you now look like any other athlete! heck, you don't just look like one, YOU ARE AN ATHLETE!

the last picture is classic!

haha, good job dude. for sure.

im impressed.

Thanks dude! Yeah, that last pic is me trying my hardest NOT to puke :)

Thanks! It's weird, at the beginning of the year I couldn't run for more than a minute at a time. One single minute. I know for sure that if I can do this, anyone can. I failed the mile every year of middle school and high school. I remember running it with the girls because I failed it the first time with the guys. Now, I'm starting to feel like a runner... kinda :)

That before pic is scary, and I have to remember that I started there. It's so easy to be critical of yourself and we all need to remember that even if we still have a ways to go, we have already come a LONG way. For that, we should be PROUD!

An athlete... I like that. Wayne the athlete. Athlete Wayne.

i see rockband for the wii in your pic. are you good? im ok on the drums haha

I was getting pretty good on the guitar, and I'm okay on the drums. I haven't been able to play since Jan (baby number 2). I miss it :(

It's funny you mention that, I actually just plugged the wii back up TODAY! :hat:

I'm feeling a little antsy. The food portion of my lifestyle hasn't been the best for the last 4 days. While I haven't done awful (probably eating around a maintenance level instead of a weight loss level) I feel like I've 'let myself go.' It sounds so weird to say that, but it's true. A little candy here, a bigger than normal lunch... seconds at dinner... it adds up, for sure. On top of that I am highly unmotivated to go to the gym tonight. It's already getting late, the kids are still up (but going down soon!), and my legs are actually sore from the run yesterday. I hate to have a rest day since I rested on Thur. and Fri. for my race.

hmmmm.

So, this week I am really going to get hardcore on my diet again and cut out the 'in-betweens'... also reduce my portion sizes a little bit on my main meals. I'm not worried, all should go well! Tomorrow at work I am going to work on a training schedule for my next race. I know that it will include 3 weekly runs (1 speed run, 1 short run, 1 long run), one day of yoga/weights, and 2 days of low-intensity cardio/weights. I have to figure out the basics (like where and when to fit my runs in)... but it should be do-able.

Here is the I am signing up for on October 11, 2009.

My next 5K is on June 13, 2009; 7:00am. It's a Race for the Cure (breast cancer), which is great because I work in clinical research on several breast cancer trials. I think it will be a really inspiring run!

Tomorrow is a new day, and I can't wait to face this week HEAD ON. Goodnight forum world.

"The grass is not greener on the other side. The grass is greener when you water it."

A friend of mine posted this quote on facebook the other day. It makes a lot of sense. We have to stop envying what we don't have and actually MAKE IT HAPPEN. I'm never going to get a hot bod by sitting around thinking "gee... it would be nice if I looked like that guy." I have to put in the work to achieve the reward.

Here's to hardwork!

Week 1 (10K Training Schedule)

Well, I sat down with my wife on Sunday and Monday and devised a training schedule for my next race. I wanted to make sure that I didn't take away from family time and that I didn't make life harder on my wife by picking awkward workout days/times.

Beginning this week, I have exactly 25 weeks until the 10K. Here is the daily breakdown:

Monday: REST DAY
Tuesday: Short run
Wednesday: Treadmill focusing on hills or speed
Thursday: Short run
Friday: REST DAY
Saturday: 45 min. Cardio Workout and/or weights and/or stretching (yoga)
Sunday: Long run

So, on Tuesdays and Thursdays I will be doing my short runs during my lunch break so that my evenings are free, Wednesdays will be in the gym after the kids go to sleep, Saturday will vary, Sunday will be on the trail.

I am doing 2 miles today, 2.5 on Thursday, and 3 on Sunday. By the end of 25 weeks I should be able to run 6-7 miles (last long run will be 7 miles) and will have 12 speed workouts and 12 hill workouts. Also, I did a tally and by the time this race comes I will accumulate 284.7 miles!!!!!!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, last night I begged my wife for the scale. I wanted to see it so bad! This is the 9th day I haven't weighed myself, and it is definitely starting to get harder. I think it's all mental. I know that I will be weighing in this weekend and I keep thinking, "what if I totally blew it these last two week!" "What if I get on the scale and it is the same, or UP!" I want to see a new, lower number - even if it is only 1 lb... I just want to know that I am going in the right direction and eating healthy. I need some form of justification from the scale.

Needless to say my wife didn't give in and I will have to wait until Sunday to weigh, but I sure am getting nervous!!!!

Question: Who else weighs every other week or every month? Do you start to get really nervous before a weigh-in? How do you cope?

AMEN TO THAT!

OMG! that's freakin amazing!

Well, I had a cheat meal today so I thought I would write my calories down... just to make sure I didn't go too overboard.

--Fiber1 Cereal w/ skim milk - 263 Cals
--1 C Grapes - 110 Cals
--Lean Cuisine - 270 Cals
--100 Calorie Pack - 100
CHEAT MEAL: (according to nutritional info from restaurant)
Burger Bites - 850 Cals
Chips w/ queso - 500 Cals
5 Fries (ha) and tbl ranch - ~200 Cals
-------------------------------------------
Total 2,293

Considering I usually eat between 1800-2000, I don't think I did too bad... it's just that my calories came from more fatty foods than normal. I did eat less during the day since I had a cheat meal coming up, usually I eat around 1200 calories before dinner.

Going for a workout (running intervals to improve time) after the kids go to bed. I should be able to work off some of the damage ;)
