importance of protein

my question is how important is eating/drinking protein for muscle building...wont just lifting weights build muscle...or will you get a large boost in building just by having more protein. i just want to know how much of a difference having more protein in your diet can make

Protein is very importatant because it's main purpose is growth and repair of the body. When you lift weights you should be lifting so that the muscle group you are doing is overloaded, that is you can't lift anymore on that set. Overloading makes little micro tears in the muscle and what the protein does is mends these micro tears forcing the muscle to grow thus it gets bigger.

Protein is important because that is what your muscles are made of. The addage "You are what you eat" applies here. And if you are lifting regularly, your muscles are needing to repair themselves. They can do that much more effectively if you are intaking what they require - protein. Muscles that are given enough protein heal faster and become bigger.

You should be intaking 1 gram of protein for every pound you weigh to maintain muscle growth. So if you weigh 160 lbs., you should be taking 160 gms.

Space your intake out throughout the day. Your body can only process so much protein at once (about 50 gms per serving max). Any extra protein will simply be flushed.

You need to be eating a well balanced diet as well

Hope this helped!

...protein is construction material for the human body like bricks are for a building. Body structures made from protein include skin, hair, nails, bones, connective tissue and of course skeletal muscle. Other proteins in your body include antibodies, enzymes, hormones such as insulin, and transporters such as hemoglobin. Next to water, protein is the most abundant substance in the body, making up approximately 15-20% of your weight. Of most interest to the bodybuilder is the fact that 60-70% of all protein in the body is located in the skeletal muscles. In order for muscle growth to occur, every day you must consume more protein than your body utilizes.
