I'm visiting the UK

Hey all,

I am heading over to the UK (in Solihull/Birmingham area) on Saturday and i will be there for 2 weeks. I know there are a few people from the UK on this forum and i was wondering if there are any "have-to-see" places... Granted i'll be working most of the time, but i do have a few days to myself. Any help or advice would be appreciated, as i'm traveling by myself :(

Maybe we can even meet up for a pint or two!

Birmingham/Solihull Area?

Place to visit: Villa Park, Birmingham.
Place to avoid: St Andrews, Birmingham.

Also try to get to see the Bullring while you're there - excellent place.

There really is very little to see in Birmingham!!

30 minutes down the road big fella :D

Bullring if you need to do some shopping, its pretty sweet. Some nice restaurants, I know a great Japanese place called the Shogun in the Mailbox (shopping complex). Good places to consume beer all down Broadstreet, like the central hub of Brum (as we call it) on Friday and Saturday nights.

Outside of that, if you've got some transport you're 30 minutes from Stratford (birthplace of Shakespeare), Warwick and Warwick Castle, both very nice, and to the south of Birmingham there's Gloucester and Herefordshire, pretty 'old world' landscape. Also nearby is Worcester, again rather pretty.

Depends how far you can travel. Museum and sight seeing wise, London is most probably where it is at but theres plenty more to see depending on where you can get too.

London has all the famous "sights" of Britain barring Loch Ness Monster and StoneHenge....

Should try and get some sort of drinking contest going here!

I'm staying in Solihull area (really close to some shopping area and a little mall), but i can easily get a taxi into birmingham on the weekend. I've been to some japanese restaurant in the Mailbox before, it may have been called Shogun...

I've also had the opportunity to visit the Rocket Club... spent a LOT of money there!

Plenty to see and do in and around Birmingham, just depends what floats your boat.

Some places in Birmingham, the Botanical Gardens if plants tickle your fancy, a walk around Brindley Place and the canals, Sealife Centre etc., there's also the National Indoor Arena, always something on there. There's art museums and theatres as well. If your interested I'll point them out.

Nearby there's also Warwick town, nice and medieval particularly good if you've just been up to the castle, Leamington Spa down the road, Kenilworth castle, Coventry Cathedral, Anne Hatheways Cottage (just outside Stratford). Some very pretty little parts of the world dotted around there.

Also right near the Mailbox and the Bullring is Birmingham New Street Station. You can get a train from here to London Euston, about an hour journey and you're into all the landmarks and museums (London museums are fantastic if you've never been). Well worth one weekend.

Oh and bring something warm and something waterproof

Well i arrived this morning and look a little nap. I checked out the gym at the hotel, and its surprisingly "adequate"... Anyway, i'll probably be sticking to Solihull Towne Centre for dinner tonight, and i might head into Birmingham later in the week.... then off to london for the weekend!

I'm going to try to make it to at least one of the places you mentioned, rather than spending all my time in the hotel! Thanks a lot!

My pleasure.

Out of them Warwick Castle is probably the best, but its pretty weather dependant. Which is a bit of a b*tch in a place like England :D
