I'm taking it one day at a time...

Alane, time for my little speech about alcohol. I really love alcohol. Alcohol is not the devil. It's your friend. There are good friends and bad friends. Now do you keep a lot of bad friends around just to say you have a lot of friends? No, of course not. You hang with the good ones. The ones that you know are there for you and always will be. You don't settle for anything less then the best when it comes to your friends.

Don't settle on anything less then the best when it comes to alcohol, either. If you are having beer, don't go for that cheap ass stuff. Go for the good stuff. Something that was crafted, not mass produced. Something that each sip, each taste is a delight. That cheap stuff is good when guzzling it, but you wouldn't sip and taste and savor every drop. Same goes for hard stuff. If you are doing shots you are wasting your opportunity. There are some great tequilas out there. To do shots of JC and you are missing out. Scotch, vodka, bourbon, sake, wine whatever it is, there is good and bad. Choose the good and enjoy it.

When enjoying it, you might spend more per drink, but you will be satisfied with fewer drinks, so it will turn out to be less money and less hardship on the diet.

WORDS COMING FROM WISDOM! Not only do I agree with bombing cheapy alchy/beer...it makes my head hurt and body ache the morning after. I noticed that when I drink the "good stuff" I don't feel terrible the day after...and I've thoroughly enjoyed myself and the night before. What sake do you recommend? When I'm doing sake bombs half the time I can't make out the name or what the waiter is telling me! SAKKKKE BOOOMMMB...HIYYYAAAHHHH!

Oh, there are so many sakes out there. (over 1600 is what I've heard) It's like saying what kind of wine do you recommend. You have to find what you like. One rule of thumb, though, is hot sake is usually low grade sake. I've never tried a sake bomb. It sounds like a fun thing to do, but the idea is to get as much cheap sake into the customers as possible. I'll take it slow, myself.

You might look around to find a sake tasting to find what you like the best. Ask at your liquor store that specializes in sake.

WOW...Trops, this is some good shiz here. You are absolutely right. Go straight for the good stuff...in the end it will taste better and if you are going to ingest the calories it might as well be worth it!! Well said! I'm a fellow boozer to. Patron silver is my passion...

I'm totally going to GOOGLE such running store you speak of so highly...ALTA have you found any? Maybe we can go together and you can show me a thing or two about running.

Normally running stores are small boutique stores and they are usually affiliated with running and/or triathalon groups. Ask around and go to a good one that will give you 1:1 service and actually look at your feet and let you sample the shoes. Avoid the major chains at first until you find a shoe you like. Then you can go wherever you want afterwards and get the best price. I usually like the 1:1 service and am willing to pay more for it and to have the expert advice. These boutique stores are normally owned by runners and they are directly invested in wanting you to return to them over and over. The customer service can't be matched!!

Patron also makes a tequila based coffee liqueur that is 40% and really good. I haven't tried it straight, (though now I'm thinking about it) but mixed in a mudslide, or just half milk and half liqueur. :drool5:

Lovely, at what point in a runner's training would you recommend getting a "good" running shoe? I've been doing 3 miles and I'm just using whatever I got at the outlet. Nothing fancy, but they are working for me fine. I don't want to spend big bucks when anything off the shelf will do.

EEEK!! Off the shelf running shoe is not good!! It's vary rare that one would have a perfectly balanced foot...if you do and you buy "off the shelf" you are probably golden. But you must buy a full size bigger. Your feet swell when you run and you have to go bigger. If not, you'll injure your toes and can lose toe nails....

I recommend the right shoe no matter how far you are running...if you don't you will hurt and stop running...point blank. Running is hard enough w/out having to worry about injuries due to bad shoes.

Here is a must read article:

Hee, hee. Yup, I'm the worst. My one pair of shoes I got from the outlets, but the pair that I keep at work for those times I can get out running is something that I picked up at K-Mart for $10. Doing good so far. I have normal arches and my ankles don't over or under pronate. I haven't had any problems yet, and I will get to a store one of these days. I just hate dropping a bunch of money and then never using the thing. I guess I've been doing enough that I'm safe to say that I'll keep with it.

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread Alane!!

If your feet are not bothering you then your shoes might be ok. But if you are ever serious about running long distances it is worth every penny to get fitted for running shoes. I had no idea my feet pronated until I went to the running store and they had me run on a treadmill and they video taped my feet. Then they played it back in slow motion and you could see clear as day that my gait was whacked.

Additionally they did a heat sensor test with a mat that you stand on. I learned from that exercise that one arch was way higher than the other. This sucks because often a shoe will feel great on one foot but it won't have enough arch support on the other.

I also didn't know that you have to buy a whole size bigger...I learned this the painful way after losing 2 toe nails...lol

And...you need to invest in a good pair of running socks. Don't buy cotton!! Again, all of these suggestions are only applicable if you are going to get serious with running....otherwise keep doing what you are doing if it is working :)
