icing my trap

i read around a bit looking at other threads about ice, but it seems that with differing injuries, there should be differing healing methods.

i tore my left lower/mid trapezius and i have been putting an ice pack on it every night for 20 minutes.
is there any correct way to ice an injury?
like 10 minutes ice, 10 minutes nothing, 10 minuets ice, 10 minutes nothing?

i also read that heat is good for increasing blood flow, and blood helps heal wounds. should i heat it with my electrical heat patch?

can i do something like:
10 minutes ice
10 minues heat
10 minutes ice
ect ect?

i would greatly appreciate any advice especially from trusted posters(bipinate, georgen)

how did you hurt that muscle PB?

4 months ago-deadlifting with bad form and then continuing to stress it in future "rehab workouts" with lighter, yet apparently damaging exercises (chinups did not hurt at the time)

biggest mistake of my life so far

i think heat will help out; im wondering how long i should heat it and when i can heat it

its good to talk to you again FF :D!!!

Ice is mainly for the acute inflammotory response to reduce blood flow hence swelling and exudate. I think with your injury and the stage and rest is what you should be aiming for and possibly heat..I would have thought you would have seen a physio of something to sort it out and give advice :s

well how do i rest it? just lay down all day?
i sleep as much as possible...take 30 minute naps throughout the week in addition to 7-8 hours a night.
i dont activate it except by moving my arms, maybe stretchign a little bit, and i swim lightly...i cut out med-heavy sports.... :(

yes lay down all day. haha nah i meant just try to minimise its use whereas possible. Im not sure what exactly you could do to speed up the process other than patience. Im sure a physio would be a good help, i think bipennate is in the process of being one, dont see him to much on here these days ;)

Proteinboy - I gotta say that I am surprised this injury has lasted this long???

Maybe look into the issue being more postural???? Find someone who can asses you well.

i have good posture...its just that i keep on accidentally "aggrivating" it...
like today i played soccer and now it is a little sore :( whatever i do just hurts it....i think DDR and swimming has made it worse too. i havent been lifting..and i cant see a good doctor...please...i just need advice

I am going to post this in a second thread of yours.

haha,, you finally got rid of that avatar, so i havn't had anythign to say. Your posts have been teachin me some stuff, you are doing good.

SO, a dead lift!! what with a shoulder roll or shoulder lift added at the end, or did you try and use momentum to lift more than you shoul have been.

I'd take the advice of George and Matt dude! you are a young healthy strong person and too valuable to be using a website like this for your injury diagnosis and recovery.

what does Derwyddon say? Aint you one of her babies?

though she is in denial about her love fer me, she is kinda smahhtt maybe
when she remembers to breath.... hahha

i would go there if i could but my parents are pissed off that i need all this doctor stuff-i already saw my normal doctor and he just said to lay off weights till it heals. that pissed my dad off because thats exactly what he told me to do. he says that doctors wont help s*it.
then i had to see the doc for my poison ivy. my mom is pissed at me for that and she is also mad at me for injuring myself in the first place...she says i have to live with the consequences.

and yea...i dont know that i tore it. thats just my uneducated guess.
it was deadlifting with too muh weight, bad form, yanking from the bottom too much. i didnt even realize i had bad form because all i cared about was breaking a PR....:(

hmm..Give us some details of the injury.

Like where, type of pain when you first injured it..

and where the pains is now and what type of pain, try an dbe as pinpoint as you can..

well most of the time, when it does hurt, it is in my lower trapezius(left side, mid/upper back..close to the rhomboids)
there is never any sharp pain, just a small ache or sting when i forcefully pull my hand back, pinching my shoulder blades together, or when i try to pull anything or support anything heavy with my left arm. i cannot shake my protein shake mixer cup with my left hand vigorously or it hurts a bit.

as of now, it doesnt hurt when i move my arm in a circular position, or if i put my arm over my head. it used to though.
i feel like i cant flex my left traps or lats or chest without a little sting
anything high impact kind of hurts it; like football, or jumping and landing hard

but when i first pulled out my lat/trap, around 3-4 months ago, i could hardly even bend my trunk sideways without my lat hurting. it was pretty bad. it has healed a lot, its just that i kept on straining it unknowingly
