i weigh 500lbs and i am new

Congrats on the desire to lose the weight and keep it off and congrats on your Latina bride!

I agree with Steve on some of his points. I think it sounds like you have been on a starvation diet for the last 9 months and it stands to reason that you will lose weight. You're starving. A man your size needs a lot more than only 1000 calories a day. You're not a bird. Especially since you said you burn about 900 calories in the gym. If my math is right, on those 3 days in the gym, your total caloric intake is 100? I'm surprised you haven't passed out during a workout.

Once the weight comes off to where you want to be, and you start eating normally again, your body will tend to store the calories trying to protect itself from starvation. The weight could possibly come right back on. Unless you're planning on eating only 1000 calories a day for the rest of your life, you might want to rethink how you're losing it. You should be eating more frequently, small meals throughout the day to keep the body going and healthy. There are calculators on this site where you enter your height weight and age to give you a good idea of the number of calories you need per day. Check one of them out and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Achieving the weight loss the right way won't allow you to lose it quite as fast, but it will be consistent and gradual so you won't end up with the loose skin and flab that comes with such a drastic and quick weight loss. Again, Kudos to you for caring enough for yourself and your bride to do something about your situation.

I can't stress how terrible your diet is.

Your trainer should be stripped of his ability to deal with people on this level if this is something he devised for you. I understand that you're happy b/c you've been fat forever and now the weight is coming off.

But let's be very clear here. The weight could come off many, many ways. Some are better than others. I could take a sword and slash some slabs of meat off you. It would "work" too b/c the number on the scale would fall, right?

It's very simple.

The more rigid you are with energy intake, the more intelligent you have to be with nutritional decisions to make sure you're nourished. I mean, we're not talking only deficiencies on the micronutritional level which in themselves can cause a lot of issues... we're talking on the macro level too where things like losing muscle is a very real possibility given your size and nutritional needs coupled with how few calories you're eating.

And I'm not talking about the kind of muscle that flexes your arm; skeletal muscle.

I'm talking about the kind the pumps you heart; cardiac muscle.

This is your chance to do things right and make some serious improvements with your health. So far, your trainer is not helping with that cause. My special needs cousin who is 13 could help you lose weight and be healthy if it were as easy as starving and depriving yourself of the essentials.

And she can't tie her own shoes.

If you enjoy working with this trainer, I'd suggest confronting him in a nonconfrontational way and explaining to him you have concerns regarding how you're going about losing weight.

Ask if there are healthier options that will also help me maintain this weight loss forever.

You can tell him what I said in this thread if he asks for specifics of why you're concerned.

Eating a balanced diet consisting of adequate protein, lots of veggies and fruits, essential fats and unprocessed carbs will take you a long way. You've proven that you're capable of being extremely strict.

If I were you I'd take that as an accomplishment. That's the worst you can feel while dieting so it only gets better from there.

I don't want to deter you from being motivated to make change. Please tell me if I am.

no your not but i am hungry and at times i wish i could eat but i really have no idea what to eat except fish chicken turkey and veggies but my GOD that gets old....i have binged as well since i started in this 9 months and i feel horrible afterwards not liking the food any more i just need variety, in the morning when i wake up to go work out i feel very tired (4:30 in the am duh i feel tired lmao) and even sick to my stomache and i wanna throw up but have not eaten anything....but my trainer tells me (and i believe him) that i need to push through it train myself to become healthy opush through the tiredness and the sick feeling and it will pass.....and it does always....i would honestly like to believe that eating more than 1000 a day is a better way but i honestly feel fat aven after my 1000....i think i need major help though, i develope other bad habbits just to maintain my diet like laxatives if i over eat or vomiting or even smoking to calm my cravings when i am bored and i dont like any of those things but it helps me defeat the food...i guess its like suicide....it just makes a mess of things and the problem is really still there

Disciple...

Eggs are great for you. Why not make an egg white omelet for breakfast, and put some of your favorite veggeis in it, like tomatoes, onions, green peppers or mushrooms? When I have that, I always have a slice of wheat toast as well. As a snack in between, have a piece of fruit of your choice. Another breakfast choice is hard broiled eggs. What about a fruit salad? Oatmeal (yes, the kind that has no flavor) and add nuts and/or fruit to it? You have options, you have to be creative. I can help create a menu for you that may be palatable and you won't be eating the same things every day.

You have to get creative. Over on my forum and I think this one has it too, there are recipe sections with yummy meals. If you're really going to learn to love this lifestyle, you're going to have to learn to love to spice up your food selection and spend time preparing foods.

Balance is key when it comes to nutritional selection.

Proteins include: Chicken and turkey breast, lean ground beef, ground turkey and chicken breast, pork tenderloin, low/no fat dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese) and eggs, fish, beans, top round or flank steaks

Fats include: Fish, fish oil pills, flax, avacados, olives, olive oil, nuts

Carbs include: Tons of veggies, fruits, whole wheat pasta and bread (wraps), rice, yams, potatos, oats

This lists go on and on. And there are many, many ways to spice up all of these foods.

i have binged as well since i started in this 9 months and i feel horrible afterwards not liking the food any more i just need variety,

I'd be binging too if I ate so few calories and I'm under 200 lbs... meaning I have a lower caloric requirement than you by a long shot.

Starvation dieting in general leads to a very unhealthy relationship with food. That's why in the long run, they general don't work. You need to be on 'good terms' with food if you're going to make it work with you opposed to against you in the long run.

but my trainer tells me (and i believe him) that i need to push through it train myself to become healthy opush through the tiredness and the sick feeling and it will pass.....and it does always....

Why can't you eat something before you train?

i would honestly like to believe that eating more than 1000 a day is a better way but i honestly feel fat aven after my 1000....

Maybe it's a matter of simple education.

Do you understand how caloric requirements are derived and really understand what a calorie deficit is?

i think i need major help though, i develope other bad habbits just to maintain my diet like laxatives if i over eat or vomiting or even smoking to calm my cravings when i am bored and i dont like any of those things but it helps me defeat the food...

These are signs of an eating disorder.

Your trainer is not helping the matter.

Monday:

This is just an example.

that all sounds really good....steve i dont eat befor ei work out so i can get a very accurate weight and also i wait till after i work out to eat because my motabolism is racing and devours just about what ever i eat

Metabolism doesn't swing as wildly as you (or your trainer) is making it out to.

Eat when you're comfortable eating... timing of meals is of little concern to me at this stage of the game for you. I'm more worried about your overall nutrition.

see but also giving my trainer some credit i dont share all this info with him about the eating disorders and stuff i did at first but he kicked my but and said not to be doing that lol

so what do i do guys because i had a small egg white omlette this morning just so i can have a massive lunch around 4 and call it quits for the day...i only eat about once or twice a day and in that once or twice i take in ALL OF MY 1000 i kow i am not eating right and yeah i am starving myself but can i possibly eat more and see the weight drop? i am used to loosing 10 to 15 pounds a week and i am very scared that if i increase my meals that this weight loss will stop...its already getting harder and harder to loose weight my trainer tells me it is just a wall i need to push past.....once again i am clueless

Horrible. Eat multiple times a day. Why? It won't affect your metabolism..maybe a tiny bit... but you're getting rid of the chances of binge eating because you're hungry. You have to remember. A good portion of your success is going to be your nutrition. When I say success I mean long term, not just short term. try our method for a week, and see how YOU feel. You will still lose the weight, my friend. I promise. This is what I am doing. i see a drastic difference in the scale, I went from an XL to a L in 15 weeks... and I haven't changed much of my routine.

Stay away from the 3 whites as much as possible. enriched white flour breaks down into a compound sugar (Steve can better explain this), Salt which holds water weight in your body (so stay away from pickles) and sugar.

If you're interested, let me know and I can definitely help out with nutrition. Am I a nutritionist, kinda but no. I was trained to be a pet nutritionist by my former employee. I just did some good research and took what Steve said to heart.

Good luck, dude. We're here to help out and don't lose your motivation. You're doing amazing!

I have found that eating several small meals a day helps me stay energized. I eat about 5 times a day but each meal only has about 300 calories in it.

I am 5'9 154 lbs and I am currently losing weight by eating 1700 calories a day and exercising daily.. 1000 calories is not nearly enough for someone of your size!! I actually think by doubling your food intake (2000 calories) you would actually lose MORE weight... and it would be easier since you would not be as hungry! Eating more often keeps your metabolism going strong. When you starve yourself like that your metabolism actually slows down because it doesnt know when you will feed it again so it stops to preserve what little energy you are feeding yourself...

In my opinion you would greatly benefit from eating more!! Try googling a calorie calculator to see how many calories your body actually needs and try to start at that point...

I am not saying stuff your face cause that never gets us anywhere but try to start at at LEAST 2000 calories instead of 1000. You seem very dedicated and I promise you will still see great results!

i am dedicated and you guys are awsome my only fear is i love food so when i allow myself any food it is hard to stop...eating more might hurt me cuz i tempt myself more....i dunno

Okay, it's obvious that you need to hear about some of the basics of metabolism.

Each of us have a specific caloric range required so sustain bodily functions, health and tissue (weight).

These needs include BMR, TEF, and TEA.

BMR = Basal Metabolic Rate
TEF = Thermic Effect of Food
TEA = Thermic Effect of Activity

Caloric Needs (metabolism) = BMR + TEF + TEA

Okay?

BMR is the amount of energy (calories) needed to sustain your body at rest. Even at complete rest your body has a lot going on inside from brain processes to respiration. Believe it or not, the majority of your caloric needs are comprised by BMR. A majority of BMR is comprised of maintaining lean body mass. People generally make this out to mean if you jack up your skeletal muscle mass, you're going to jack up your metabolism. This isn't the case generally, considering lean body mass is comprised of much more than muscle, most notably your organs.

BMR can make up upwards of 70% of your metabolism. So like I said, the majority of your your caloric needs is comprised of BMR.

TEF is simply the energy required to breakdown and digest the foods you eat. It requires energy to move foods to where they need to be in the body for utilization and storage and that is represented by TEF.

TEF can account for 10% of total caloric requirements.

TEA is simply the calories required to fuel all activity above and beyond pure rest. This includes exercise, fidgeting, walking, gardening, house cleaning, etc, etc.

Now, it should be evident from this that the larger you are, the higher your caloric needs are going to be. You have more tissue to support, more weight to move around, etc, etc.

To determine the actual numbers, you start with BMR. There are many, many ways to arrive at an estimated BMR. They can do an actual metabolic test or you can use fancy formulas or calculators.

Suffice it to say that your BMR is up over 5000 calories. That means to sustain your current level of tissue, you would need to consume at least 5000 calories and that's not taking into account any activity whatsoever. Add activity into the picture and you might be burning between 6-8000 calories per day. That means if you eat beween 6-8000 calories per day your energy intake = your energy outtake and no weight will be lost or gained.

Think about that for a second.

Now compare this to what you're currently doing. You could be losing eating 5000 calories per day but intead, you're eating 1000. And the foods that comprise said 1000 suck.

This isn't about seeing how fast you can take the weight off. It's not a competition and like I previously mentioned, the faster it falls off, the faster it tends to come back primarily for psychological reasons more than anything else.

You have to make this about being healthy. Make this about adopting habits that make you feel natural. You don't want to be a prisoner here. At 750 I'm assuming you felt you were a prisoner to your body. You're not freeing yourself here. Now you're a prisoner to food and weight loss.

Shed the shackles man, that's what I'm trying to say. Ditch all the irrational, extreme behavior and find the middle ground. You might be be losing 15 lbs per week but you can still get away with a nice, consistent weight loss while feeling loads better.

If I were you I'd be shooting for 3000-3500 calories per day. I'm not a doctor though and someone of your size should really get some testing done to make sure things check out before you embark on this sort of journey. The fact that you haven't keeled over already though eating jack shit and exercising says something.

Is this making more sense to you now?

No no.. you can do it...its all about will power and if u have made it this far i dont see you just turning back...

you do need to still enjoy food or this diet will never stick.. what is going to happen after you lose all your weight? Are you just going to go back to eating cheeseburgers and fries just because you can? All that weight will pile back on.. You really need to evaluate this in the early stages before its too late.. Don't deny yourself food because that is just not realistic.. Adding calories is simple.. we all know that but there are healthy ways to do it..

I saw someone mention an omlette for breakfast.. thats much more beneficial than a special k bar.. protein in the morning will start your day off better... Just try what we are saying for a week or two and see how much better you feel!

Just do what you are doing now since you are so dedicated to it but add in a little nutrition like an extra veggie with each meal or a cup of brown rice.. you just need to eat more than 1000 calories a day or you are going to be sorry :(
