I think the penny finally dropped...

Hi San,

Wow you're not far into your journey but doing really well so far! well done.

Good job on resisting the Curry you made for your husband - the stirfry sounded deliscious! its always nice when clothes get loose. keep up the good work!

Hey, San, just caught up on your diary. Looks like you are really making a change. The mind set that chocolate is just off limits is a good place to be. I know when I think I can have just a little, that's what gets me in trouble. Next thing I know I'm packing the kids off to Hershey Chocolate World. :ack2: Better to just think that the chocolate is for the family and not for you.

Don't worry about the husband being an ass. All guys are asses. Once he sees that this is just the way it is, and not a phase that he needs to endure, he'll come around.

Ferocity -
I actually like cucumbers, and am eating them. So far, the veggies I'll eat are carrots (but only raw), Sweetcorn, green beans, lettuce, bean sprouts, sweet peas. That's it.
And yes, it's still strange to have to eat in order to lose weight. But I think I'm getting my head around it, slowly but surely. :)

Thanks a lot! :) And suprisingly enough, given my track record, I seem to handle the temptations well so far....not sure if it will stay like that, but I am finding more and more stuff that I can actually eat, and really like, different veggies and fruit and things like that. And stirfry....I actually love it, but never bothered to make it, go figure! *lol*

Trops -
Thanks for stopping by...:) And that's exactly why I don't do the 'just one piece' thing. Because I can't eat 'just one piece'. If I try that, the next thing will be another, and another, and then the bar will be gone, and I'll hate myself for it. So....no. No chocolate, no sugary coffee, nothing like that. If I want something sweet, I'll have some fruit, which usually helps. And another thing, I only buy chocolate that I don't like. My husband loves dark chocolate and Turkish Delight. I hate both of them, so if that's in the cupboard, I'm not bothered at all.
As for hubby....I think you hit the nail on the head. At the moment, he thinks it's just a phase, and I'll get over it. With time, he'll get used to it, and will probably want to join in the end. He certainly needs it (our scale goes up to 400 lbs, and when he stepped on it, he got an error message....so much for that...:( ).

I wasn't kidding. Last week we went to Chocolate World and I had more chocolate in that one day then in the past 5 months. Now I'm back on the no sweets at all. Coffee is a big exception. I need something sweet in there. Usually it's either Ovaltine (chocolate malt with vitamins) or honey.

Speaking of sweeteners, is it just artificial sweeteners that give you problems? I'm a big advocate of local honey. It is so good for you and will help the local beekeepers. :cheers2:

Not much going on. Weather is depressing...I mean, how much rain can one person take?? I thought the weather was crap in Germany, but since I moved over here (3 years ago), I don't think we had 7 days in a row without rain. It's bloody depressing!!

Anyway....weight loss forum here, so, let's get on to the weight loss....*lol*...nothing much to say there either. I'm slowly losing weight, which is nice. I do 1 hour on my little bike per day, and I want to add 30 minutes of walking, but that depends on if I get 30 minutes without rain....*sigh* Guess as soon as my weight drops under the magical 325, I think I'll invest some money in a treadmill.

Other than that, I'm getting more used to veggies, and am less tempted by creamy stuff, pasta and sweets. It's easier than I thought...or at least, at the moment it is.

I am starting to notice a difference in my clothes - not a huge difference, but pants that were really tight are starting to get a little more lose, and I have less trouble doing the buttons on pants as well. Oh, and my bra's are getting a little less filled....great, the only place where I don't need to lose any weight is the one where I lose it first. *sigh*

My mom will come to visit on the 10th....she hasn't seen me for 4 months now, so I wonder if she'll notice any difference. She said she wants to go on walks with me and stuff because she needs to lose a little weight as well...so, if you could all keep your fingers crossed for good weather in the Manchester area from Sept. 10th to 17th, I would be eternally grateful. ;)

Oh, and I tried the proper lemon juice in my water....soooo much better than other fruit juices!

Does anybody know how quickly a stomach shrinks? Just wondering, because I just had 160 gr (~0.3 lbs) of prawns with a piece of bread, and I feel like I'm going to burst!

I can only imagine....I would have eaten the place empty! *lol* As for coffee....I just stopped drinking it. I hate it without sugar, so I am not having it. Never tried to sweeten it with honey to be honest!!

And it's only artificial sweeteners...but it doesn't matter which kind. I tried a coffee with splenda the other day, and ended up sick as a dog. I really don't know what it is, but something in sweeteners just doesn't agree with me.
Anyway, never thought of using honey....but that's a pretty good idea. Of course I know that honey has loads of calories and stuff, but it's much healthier than refined sugar, and much sweeter, so a spoonful or something should do the trick...that would allow me maybe a cup of coffee a day, which would be nice....thanks for the tip!! :)

I'll go a week without coffee from time to time. I find that my weight loss is so much better with coffee then without. Increased energy or metabolism or whatever, it works for me. Right now I'm pretty cranked up. :willy_nilly: Wish I could head to the gym right now.

You're doing so well San. It's awesome to see you sticking to your guns.

And yeah - the bazooms are always were it's first to go. Always. I hate it too. They were the only fun part of being heavy, LOL.

I'm also a big fan of lemon (or YUM lime) juice in water - it makes it much easier to drink. If you like that sour taste, I use lemon and and lime juice on steamed vegetables, especially broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, and green beans.

Another thing that can help is a little sprinkle of a nice, strong cheese. Real Parmesan (or even the canned stuff) is good on many vegetable. You only need a tiny bit and it can seem decadent. Parmesan doesn't melt much either, so it's good in texture department.

Another new thing, one my Mom introduced me to, is roasting broccoli and/or cauliflower. It shrinks considerably so you can eat a lot more without feeling stuffed on vegetables. I usually spray a little dish with some olive oil, toss in the bite-sized florets, and roast them along with whatever else is in the oven (usually around 350 - 415 degrees) until they're browning around the edges. You could add your smidge of Parmesan to that and just go crazy.

Asparagus is good roasted too, and it's normally a vegetable I hate.

Keep it up!

Just realised it's been nearly a week since I last posted. Sorry about that.

Guess there is just not much going on at the moment. I am trudging along with my weight, made it down to 338.4, compared to 342 the week before. Guess that's not too bad.

Took some pictures today, and I don't see a damn bit of difference. I notice that some of my clothes are getting a little more loose though, so something must be happening. I mean, nearly 30 lbs, they've come off 'somewhere'...*lol*...wish I knew where though.

Anyway, I am up to 45 minutes on my little exercise bike now, and I can do it without pain or cramps now, which I guess is good as well.

I tried some instant coffee yesterday, and it was horrible, so I guess I'll just stay off the coffee altogether. As for the veggies....at the risk of sounding horribly picky now, but I can't get broccoli or cauliflower down, the mere smell of it makes me gag. I hate Asparagus, so I don't think that's an option either, and the smell of parmesan makes me sick. At the moment I am sticking to a few veggies, cucumber, carrots, sweetcorn, peas, beans. And salads in various forms. I found that raw cabbage works great in a salad, at least for me. Just a tiny bit of salad cream and I'm happy! :)

I'm also eating quite a bit of fish, prawns and the likes. I forgot how good all that stuff tastes. Even made it through my wedding anniversary without relapse - we ordered Chinese food, and I had half of my portion (soft noodles, mixed meats and mushrooms) that day, and the leftovers the next day for lunch.

Hubby's a little more supportive now, maybe he finally realised that it's not a fad diet or anything that I'm on...not sure, but in any case, he has stopped waving chocolate around in my face. He's actually cutting down on crisps and stuff himself now!

Anyway....not much more to write...hope everybody out there is doing good and happily losing weight! :)

Oh, and if anybody has any sunshine to spare? Please send some into the Manchester area...I am soooooooo sick of this rain, it's not even funny anymore....:(

You are doing great. Keep up the good work.

It's great the hubby is starting to support you. That should make things a lot easier. Always helps when the support is right there.

Matt

Hi San! Just read through your diary and wanted to say congrats on getting started and making such good progress! I was just talking to a friend last night and she said that artificial sweetners make her sick too...and I had never heard of that before!

I found that my selection of foods broadened as I began to eat healthier....I got bored after a bit with the same stand-bys. But I also got creative with spices and the like to change things up. The way you prepare veggies can really make a difference in the way you enjoy them. I love my asparagas grilled or broiled and even raw better than boiled and it has a different flavor if it is still tender crisp rather than soft.

Have fun experimenting with recipes and finding new healthy ways to enjoy old favorites.

Have a great week!

Beth

Sorry for being awol for a while...I had my mom over here for a week, I only see her about twice a year now, so I spend as much time with her as I can while she's here.

The week was okay, and I got plenty of extra exercise with running around and looking at stuff. I wish I had one of these step-counting thingies, I probably walked a few dozen miles...*lol*

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and food tips - I am carefully trying a few veggies that I usually don't eat, and I think I am making a bit of progress. I had some roasted cauliflower with a sprinkling of cheese yesterday, and while I wouldn't say that it's my favourite food, I managed to get it down without bringing it back up (which is what usually happens when I try to eat cauliflower). So that's a bit of progress.

Other than that, not much happened. I think I lost about 3 lbs last week, and slowly but surely my pants are getting more lose. I need a belt for all my pants now, where before I could only just about close the button - so, while I still don't see a difference, I can definitely feel it. It's a nice feeling for sure. :)

I'm struggling with the drinking though, and have been seriously slacking off. I am trying to have my 6 pints at least, but a few days I didn't even make it anywhere near there. Is it normal to struggle to drink enough? I'm just not thirsty!

Oh and about the sweeteners, I had a look around and got some info, and apparently nausea, diarrhea (sp) and migraines are common side effects of sweeteners. Usually just when they are overdosed, but if people are sensitive to the stuff, even a small amount can cause that. So I guess it's best to stay away from them.

Hmmm....not sure what else to write, there's not a lot going on....I want to start a little bit of strength training next week, so I'm searching dozens of websites for info about how much, how long etc., and there's different info on every single website...how darn confusing!! *lol* Guess I'll just pick out what looks good and what I think I can handle, come up with my own plan, post it here and see if somebody shouts at me or not! *lol*

Okay, time to start tidying the house...why does having guests always result in having chaos once they leave?

Hope everybody out there is doing well! :)

Hey San, great job on trying out new veggies. After awhile you really might start to crave them. That's what happens to me once I start eating something regularly. Also, that's great progress with the 3 pounds, and even better that you are losing inches! Keep up the great work. Sounds like you had a good time with your mom.

Finally getting the chance to sit down and write...it's nice having guests and all, but the peace and quiet is not too bad either! *lol*

Just stepped off the scales, lost 3.3 lbs since last sunday. I thought it might be less because I haven't been paying that much attention to what I ate while my mom was there, and I actually had a cup of coffee with sugar every day - guess it wasn't as bad as I thought. Plus, loads of walking around. And no giving in to the cravings when walking past McDonalds....I never thought I had that much willpower! YAY me! *lol*

Anyway, I did the nekkid picture thing again today, and for the first time I *think* I noticed some very slight changes. Might have been the lighting though, not sure. I definitely think my backside has gotten smaller, and my pants seem to confirm that.

I also took some measurements...of course I took them all in cms, so I just roughly converted them to inches....so, according to my amateur measuring this is what it looks like:

08/21/08 --- 09/19/08
upper arms 18.5 --- 17.5
upper thighs 34.5 --- 33.9
calves 20.9 --- 20.4
chest 57.3 --- 53.3
waist 56.9 --- 53.9
bum 57.7 --- 54.1
belly (the big roll at the bottom)
62 --- 59.1

Hmmm....does that look like I got it right? Or did I do something wrong while measuring? I tried to stick in the same places and do it exactly the same way as the first time. Would be nice to think that all those inches have disappeared off me already!
Oh, and can you tell I'm brick-shaped? chest, waist, bum, all nearly the same...*lol*

Hubby has decided to lose weight now as well, he's still struggling with the veggies and fruit (he's a picky eater, anything that is healthy doesn't taste good....*lol*), but he's been cutting down on the soda and on junk food/sweets. It's a start I guess.

I had pasta with king prawns, spinach leaves and - wait for it - broccoli yesterday, ate it all, and kept the broccoli down. Hey, I might just end up liking that stuff one day! *lol*

Still working on coming up with a light weight training to get started with....things have been rather hectic around here the last few days, including a big row with my husband, refurnishing the bedroom, nearly killing myself while putting new lights into a friend's house (I took the fuse for the lights out, so it should have been safe, but some idiot mislabeled the fuses and I got a nasty surprise....ouch!), falling down a set of stairs (good thing that I still have a lot of padding) and trying to convince a new laptop to downgrade from Vista to WinXP. I am not entirely sure what the most painful of all of that was, but I think it was the laptop....*lol*

Anyway....haven't even had time to do my cycling yesterday, so that's first on the agenda today. That, and trying to figure out where to get $1500 from to get my car fixed - the clutch is going, I have been driving around without a 3rd gear for a few months now, but now the 4th is going as well, so I guess it really needs fixing....*sigh*

I'll try to post more regularly from now on....but I'm not promising anything. When the heck has real life become so stressful??? *lol*

Hope everybody out there is doing well and shedding the pounds they want to shed! :)

Hey, congrats on the weight loss! That's fantastic! :hurray:

Gotta take it easy though, Windows is hazardous to your health. :biggrinjester:

Keep at it, you're doing great! The time to work out and train will be there, even if at first you can only fit in 5 or 10 minutes at a time. I moved it up as one of the priorities on my list, to the detriment of other things. I'm hoping once my work mellows out a bit, I can stop working 10 hour days and get some of my life back. You know, to do those little things, like sleep. :willy_nilly:

Yay!!!!

Oh well, so much for posting to my diary regularly....I'm such a slacker. :(

Anyway, Phoenyx, you're certainly right, Windows is a health risk! *lol*

I have started to work out regularly, and while some of the exercises are pretty difficult (for little old me anyway), I think I'm doing okay. Didn't sprain or tear anything yet, which I guess is good. I do about 30 minutes, 3 times a week, and about 45 minutes of cardio every day.

I still keep losing weight, slowly but surely, so all's well there. And I think I will order myself a new pair of jeans today, and see if I can fit into a smaller size. The ones I have are definitely getting too big now. That has never happened before! *lol*

Still a long way to go though. I notice that a few things are getting a little easier though...like, to open the trunk of my car I have to bend down and pull a handle on the floor, right next to my seat. Before, I had to get out and unlock the trunk with the key because I couldn't reach the handle, now I can actually just pull it. And there is more room between my legs and the steering wheel as well.

On the downside, my boobage seems to be depleting considerably. I mean, they were saggy before, but it's getting worse and worse. At least I think so. Hubby says they're smaller, but still okay, but then again, they're his favourite toys, so he wouldn't say anything unless they disappeared completely. *lol*
It bugs me though, they looked bad enough as they were before.

And it seems as if I can see my stretchmarks more than I used to....but that might be just my imagination.

Other than that, nothing really new or interesting happening. I'll try to have something more interesting to report next time I post!

Thanks to everybody out there for your support, good advice, and occasionally giving me a much needed laugh. Don't think you know how much it helps to have this group of people. :hug2:

that's always a nice feeling..

and do order those new jeans.. even if they don't fit right now -you know they will... that was one of my biggest motivators -more than the scale - continually buying a smaller size and eventually fitting into it..

I actually just did that....I got some catalogues with stuff on sale, and there was a really nice pair of jeans....but not in my size. The biggest they had was two sizes down from the one I am wearing right now. I thought 'what the heck' and ordered them...they won't fit now, but maybe by christmas they will.....:)

Plus, over here you pay by size, the bigger sizes are more expensive than smaller ones in most places...and I am only one size away from getting into a cheaper category now...so, another reason to drop those pounds! *lol*

Well now that's cool, smaller sizes = less money seems like a cool payment system.

Having any luck keeping your husband motivated to lose weight with you despite the vegetables?
