The reputation system is just a way to give kudos to other members for helpful posts, or whatever by clicking on 'give rep for this post. I think it increases based on other factors, too, such as number of posts but I could be wrong.
As we've seen around here lately, it's not especially relevant. But, hey, everyone enjoys kudos, right?
