I have a wierd pain in my chest area(LONG POST)

Ok...where to start.
The first time that I got this pain was in Febuary of this year. I was doing push-ups and I went down to do a pushup and a sharp pain comes in to my chest. I stopped immeditaly. But I continued to do them the next day and so on.
This pain would come back during the day. At that time I was in school, so I would be siting there crouched over with my hand on my chest trying to find out where it is coming from.
I went through this, I got passed the chest pains. I have been good for a long time all the way through May, when I stopped working out. I did get them after I stopped working out.
It would be a really sharp pain. Sometimes on for a split seconds some times a little longer like up to 3 seconds MAX. I would come from about the third rib up on my left side. I would almost be like someone was stabbing me. I have trouble breathing when this happens to me too. Like I would be standing and be like sh!t here it goes again try take small breathes.
My workout was based on basically Pushups and thats it. Until about april when i started going out for a 1.6 mile jog. I do just fine on the jog. I can finish it within about 13-14 mins. And for pushups I was just doing about 25 reps and like 4-8 reps sometimes a little more.

Sorry for the long post
Thanks for reading

Cliff notes...
I get a sharp pain 3 ribs up near my heart. Can't breathe that well when it happens. It was a basic work out, just pushups. 25reps and 4-8sets. It still happens even though I don't work out.

I have asked my doctor he just told me not to over do it. I was like am I really over doing it...???

I get that sometimes too, but mine last for maybe a minute. My mom, who has started working with weights/resistance, just told me she experienced it today. I don't know what it could be...I'm gonna pool some resources and try to find out.

-edit- I get mine maybe 5-10 times a year, max. It will usually come out of nowhere.

Well when I was working out in FEB I would get it like 2-3 times a day and just about every day of the week.

And now its maybe like 1-3 times a week

Well I know that having a stroke in my family is fairly common. Considering it happen to my grandfather(dads side) and my dad (when he was in his early 30s)

Thats what I can't tell. But is there really a muscle around the 3rd rib. I mean it could be but when it happens and i try to touch it, its almost like its behind the ribcage

I'm not sure but.. when you lift weights, you put a lot of stress on your body. If you notice, sometimes you hold your breath without knowing it just trying to get through your lift... Though you said you were only doing pushups... You should go to the doctor, see if everything is ticking correctly, stop running and forcing your airways to close the way it does.. Maybe you have asthma and you dont know it? Get it checked out!

Definitely get it checked for anything dangerous.

I had/have the same type of thing off and on, after heart, lung, stomach tests and lots of worrying it was finally determied to be from muscle spasms from both my upper back pulling around the side and from my neck muscle that runs down the front connecting to the center/left of the sternum. Doesn't make it hurt less to know the cause but at least I don't worry about it now and some stretches or muscle relaxants can get rid of it when its persistant.

I think it could just be heartburn.
I would feel pain on and off at random times (though not always when I worked out). It felt sharp and right around my chest. I thought it was serious but it just turned out to be heartburn. Could yours be the same problem?

I just chew my food better and no problems.

Well I did see the doctor...He said it was probalbly just something to do with my mucles and that i should just increase the load slowly. He said i shouldn't really worry about it at all as long as it dones' happen during or after I go running.

I stopped everything right now. I am at school and I am trying to go to the gym but...yea you know how it is.
Like I just came back from playing basketball and I was fine. No trouble breathing...

Maybe it is heart burn, but I have had heart burn in the past it its not in the same area. If you know what I mean. This pain is not coming from the sterme(sp?) its coming from like 2.5 inches down from my nipple on my left side(heart)

well everyone can put there medical books down, I know exactly what this is. It's called side stitches, also known as exercise related transient abdominal pain (ETAP). The pain is caused by a spasm of the diaphragm muscle. what creates this intense, stabbing pain under the lower edge of the ribcage is the stretching of the diaphragm muscle and the ligaments. the good news is it's not life threatening it's just annoying and painful. To prevent it from happening you need to improve your cardiovascular fitness, and concentrate on breathing deeply during exercise.
well on the other hand I have been making mistakes in the past few days, maby I should take a month or so off from this site do some refresh reading? what do you think?
