I get siatica when doing crunches

Hi people,
I've been suffering Siatica when doing regular situps. Very sharp shooting pain shoots down my right leg from the base of my spine when in that position.
It was my fault from putting weights down wrongly when I was 18, I stood up and crunch, I couldnt sleep properly for months due to the uncomfortable pain, which eventually subsided, and for years its been fine, until I started doing situps again.
So now I have to lay on my bed (legs hanging off) and raise them up, 1x straight up, 1X bend knees in and raise up - this way I dont have any pain.

Point is, does anyone have any tips for relieving the pain or a way to continue doing proper situps without the pain kicking in, when it happens its completely disabilitating...

for thoes of you who don't know sciatic is the largest nerves in the body and are about the size of your little finger. They come out of the spinal column low in the back and then go behind the hip joint, down the buttock, and down the back of the leg to the foot. unfortunatly there is not much for cures. all you can do is keep working at it, so do situps like you've been doing staying active and this might cause the problem to "fix it self" hard to explain how that works, but it could also cause it to reinjure yourself. ya so stay active, within limits imposed by your pain.
hmm you could try doing them while hanging on a bar, a decline bench might work. Ill let some of the others chime in on alternative exercises.
o yes almost forgot there is a cure of sorts or a way to help with pain. on the way but I don't know how long it will take but it has to do with ( 5-hydroxytryptamine ) it was comparable with that of NSAID therapy. I don't remember to much it's somthing to look into.

^Thanx for the info & advise phaledax,
its really appreciated dude...Ill look up the 5-hydroxytryptamine & NSAID therapy,
