I don't know where to start

:D I´m 5ft7 and I start having the same problem. I think it´s not because people are THAT much taller but just because stuff is supposed to look crazy tall (also: 5 inch heels are considered normal footwear instead of a form of bondage these days). And models are crazy tall of course. "Palaver" is used pretty much exactly the same in (Austrian-) German, which I find funny.

I love the word palaver. "What a load of palaver!" I haven't heard it for a while. For the first time in my life, I am finding some slacks too long Polly & I/m about 5'7& 1/2" It's a pain. Even bushwalking ones, which obviously are not meant to be worn with heels. Crazy!

I never thought about high heels Maria. Thanks for pointing it out. Yes, the youngsters do add about 4 inches to their height these days don't they?
Cate Here's another palaver. A well known English actor/celebrity, who trades that he is a happily married regular family man; has just won a super injunction to stop the English press naming him for his sexual antics with a hooker and her mate. Now, OK ,but he has been named in the Scottish, press, US and Canadian not to mention social media over seas. But we in England can't find out who he is...I'd love to know! N need to name him is there? Just post a photo and say how big a fan you are. Isn't our law ridiculous

Just Google celebrity injunction Polly & you'll soon see who it is. I hadn't heard about it. It is not a hooker & her mate. The alleged couple are both male (Elton John) & the less well-known partner apparently had a Menage a trois with 2 other men. It really shouldn't be news. I am heartily sick of reading about so-called "celebrities" & what they get up to. As far as I can see they were all consenting adults. I have no interest in it & I also don't see why it should be out there in public anyway. There is no crime involved as far as I know & it is not serving the public by them knowing. The article I just read was quite nasty.
Hope all is well in your lovely part of the world. I am very grateful to be in a loving, happy relationship in a beautiful part of the world & I know you are too, xoxo Cate

We can't even google it over here Cate,it is a total blackout.Even if we try to get in to foreign newspaper sites we ate stymied.

...which only makes the story more interesting. Famous people getting it on for money wouldn't really be news otherwise, would it? I say whatever consenting adults get up to in privacy is their business alone.

I had a phone call this afternoon from an old friend from way back in 1972 and it brought back a special memory of my mum .My old friend was a young doctor when I was a young staff nurse. For some reason, lost in the annals of time, he was always known by his initials..L.C. I shared a flat with friends and one day my mum rang. L.C.was there (cadging a free meal) and answered the phone. He told mum I was working, introduced himself as L.C and took a message. When I got home and rang my mum she said 'Oh Polly! That poor woman Elsie sounds just like a man':hurray:Good one mum

Our house is 53years old, we've been in it 3 yrs and just starting to get unessential jobs done. The inside doors are the originals, and although still perfectly serviceable are dark and dingy so today we are having new white ones fitted. 7 in all. The firm, which is local, should have been here at 8.30... we are still waiting.I'm not too worried because they have fitted doors in 4 houses in the close and have a good reputation but a poor one for time keeping

Doors are so expensive, aren't they? But - even when you rarely notice them - they really change the look of a room.

You have never said a truer word Maria. They have made the whole house look lighter. Our landing is very small, with 3 bedroom doors and 1bathroom door leading off it.Even with light wallpaper it was dark. You should see the difference! Our next door neighbour has booked them after seeing what ours look like.
This is ours, but they have brass handles rather than chrome

Our front door is a big honking hardwood plank - I'm constantly tempted to cut in a window to brighten up the living room, but my wife's not loving the idea, and I can't think of a good window choice.

Those doors would definitely brighten up any house Polly. Mirrors make a difference too.
Would a stained glass window be nice in it LJ?

Nice one Cate. We did that in our old house LJ and it made a heck of a difference.
The 7 old doors are in our garage. If the firm which fitted them, took them away they would have to pay a fee at the council tip, which they would then have to pass on to the customer. So they remove all the fixture and cut the doors in halfand the customer disposes ofthe because being ordinary householders they get free use of the tip. Two of our neighbours are taking them up this morning.I'm going to make them some welsh cakes as a thank you

:) The lovely neighborhood again! I used rented a place with salmon-pink doors for a while and while I was way too lazy to repaint them for the little time I spent there I never got used to them.

My husband's birthday today, we don't usually celebrate our birthdays. After a couple of bereavements we just lost the umph. But we said in January that enough was enough and to pull ourselves together. The problem was that it is my birthday next Tuesday and would have been our daughters in early June.
I have to go for breast screening at mid day,I hate it!

Oh Polly. Your birthdays are still very special as I think you & your husband are very special. Please give him a great big hug for me. I just shed a tear for the two of you. Such a huge loss. Sending you both so much love Polly

It's always a bad time of year for me Cate. Christmas, Easter, birthdays, holidays. All those milestone dates through the year turned into times we dread coming around.
Just before she died my daughter was going up a little hill, turned around and said 'Love ya mum' gave me that special smile all we mums know, and jogged off. This is the memory which does it for me, still brings the tears on.
On a brighter note. I went for my breast screening and the radiographer reminder me of a female version of Scooby Doo's daft cousin Scooby dumb.

I think it's a good thing that you decided to celebrate again (you deserve a celebration, hon; you're awesome!) But I can see it's hard, especially with this kind of timing. Big hug for the both of you :grouphug:
