how to tone my lower body when have knee pain

I am 19 and have been suffering with regular knee and ankle pain since I was 12 because I'm a dancer. I can not find any exercises to tone/strengthen my thighs, quads, calves, or butt that does not hurt my knees and/or ankles. I'm talking ANYTHING... no exercises for them are painless for me. Any suggestions for exercises that you know that might not cause me pain will be helpful.

How do you dance with a bad knee? I'd recommend you talk to a physical therapist. They can best diagnose your level of discomfort and then provide exercises to safely stregthen the area.

Sorry I can't be of much help

trust me it's not easy! ;-) Seriously though, because of it I keep having to stop dancing for a few weeks at a time. Sometimes my knee will be fine for months at a time. I've been to a physical therapist for it and they help strengthen the muscles I need to not cause further injury to my knees but I don't know how to work out my legs.

u seem in a bad way...ur therapist must not b very good if they can't find wat's wrong with it...maybe try some exercise bike and / or cross trainer (the one with the big foot holes but not the arm handles?)...for exercise bike try with seat at different hts so your leg doesn't reach full ext and keeps pressure on the muscles...use a high int setting (pedal resistance) and do bouts going as hard as you can...for x trainer try going backwards for glutes and hams and staying in a crouched / squat position...also exercises don't haqve to be done full range you can do partial reps to just before point of pain and c how they go...if u don't quite understand wat i mean drop me a post at rich-fit.com and i''l try and explain in detail

Hey there, I think I know what you have. I've been dancing for the past 12 years and now have the same problem.
After visiting 3 different specialists because it was so annoying for me, they diagnosed it as femur patella syndrome.
He couldn't offer a lot besides a massage specialist to help work the kinks out which seems to help a little. He said that if it becomes severe they can talk surgery but not much help beyond that.
This probably sounds bad, but I have noticed that after doing lower leg exercises for a while it stopped working, not sure if thats because the muscles are starting to become strong again or what.
Hope this helps!
