How to proceed w/ sore knee?

Hi, I was just wondering what you all would advise in this situation. I am not quite sure why but my left knee started hurting badly while running today, so I went home and iced it for a while. It hurts to walk at this point.

I do about 1/2 hour on the elliptical 5 days a week, and I was planning on running MWF's to train for a 5k.

So, I'm not sure how exactly to proceed at this point and how to get in my cardio. Do you think it would be okay to do the elliptical w/ the swollen knee? If not, would the bike be better?

Basically I just want to make sure I can keep working out and not fall behind. If it still hurts and is swollen on Friday, I don't know if I should push it and try to run. At this point, I'm not even running a mile .. I've just started.

Any advice would be appreciated :) Thanks!

hey mommy,,,

skip the spammer - LOL!!! what funny post. Maybe the real question they are asking is- ARE YOUS URE IT IS PAIN! lol... many peeps confuse pain and pleasrue. maybe what you really feel is pleasure, and you're just demented!
LOL!!!

hahahaha

take 2 days off running, and then let's see how you are.

Running is a very body taxing activity, and you are new. Just take a break, and then let's see what's up.

how swollen is it?

let's see a pic

FF

and what kind of pain?

Like I get Iliotibial Band pain. I have one hip that is slightly higher and turned forward. It hurts on the outside of my knee and up towards my hip.

Does it feel like nerve pain, or something else?

Like FF said, often when you are starting out it is just the process of beginning running, but you should take a little rest and see how it feels...

Thank you both! It is not as swollen today but still sore, there is puffiness on the upper inside corner of my left knee. That's where it's sore too.

So the pain is sort of just like a weakness when I walk and it hurts to put weight on it. Going down steps is harder than going up because I can't hold the weight on that leg as I bend my knee. It's achy, not really sure how else to describe the pain. I feel like I'm not making any sense, lmao!

I can tell you though that as I was on the track, it wasn't bad on the straightaways, but when I was going around the bend to the right, that's when I felt it. So maybe it's because of how my left foot was landing out to the left a little as I went around the bends?

you may be onto it there. that 1/12 mile track is a tight circle, and now you are running further. Go outside when we get back on track.

It sounds like the teardrop muscle thing is sore

rest it.

then we will talk about stretching after your runs - wait, I already agave you all that info.

Okay outside I go .. I looked up that muscle and it's in exactly that area .. I just hope I don't have any cartilage problems. That would suck!

I started getting really bad knee pain last year and was really stupid and kept running to the point where it would be so stiff I would have to start walking even if my lungs could keep going. When I went to the physio she couldn't believe i had waited that long to go see her and so it took ages to go away. it's not TOO bad now, but I still can't do some things like mountain climbers OUCH they really hit the front of your knees.
Basically I just had to strengthen my vastus medialis and do these stupid little exercises, which work mind you :p

But yeah I would recommend definantly icing it when you can, stop running when it starts hurting, and if it keeps happening GO SEE A PHYSIO. It's just not worth it letting the problem get bigger and bigger.

Thanks again!

I found a very sore spot just pressing around my knee, on the inside of my knee. I looked up some diagrams, is that the medial ligament?

I wouldn't mess around with knee issues - there are too many moving parts and some of them don't heal well (tendons) or at all (cartilage). I would stay off of it until you can have an orthopedist check it out.

no it doesnt. Until you see the doc you have a chance to do other stuff, like make bicepts and pecs, and strengthen your back, do ab work, and on and on the list goes.

Quit being such a girl!

:sport:

Okay so it's knee tendinitis, apparently. Sounds pretty generic, but the area of the pain is the pes anserine ... something like that. Anyway she says no running until I do some physical therapy. :( I will get on the elliptical soon though! I swear!!! :(

ouch....I hope you feel better soon.

Saw the orthopedist today for the follow up after my MRI and I have a stress fracture. I'm not allowed to run for a while .. and I just started. :bncry:

So sorry to hear, but I can't tell you how glad I am you went to see the doc! That could have really gotten worse if you hadn't!

Take it easy and follow orders, it's better to get it healed properly than to do something to that could really do some damage!

take care!

I can still get around but I can't do anything involving impact. As far as the elliptical, etc, I can do it as long as it doesn't start to hurt. He said he didn't want to cast me or anything crazy because I'm getting around okay, and I have to go back in 4 weeks to get another x-ray so he can check how it's healing. Weird that it barely hurts at this point, but I bet if I tried to run I'd feel it, lol.
