How to get flat abs

I'm 153 pounds and 5'3. Looks pretty big on my frame. I'm actually OK with my body except for my stomach. I look like I'm 6 months pregnant and have to suck it my tummy all the time (annoying!). I'm wondering what kind of ab workout you do to get a flat tummy? And do I have to lose weight all over my body before I see any ab changes or can I just work on my tummy?

I have back problems so sit-ups are a no-no.

Thnx

That's not my pic. I found it on the net but my tummy is kinda like the before pic of this but fuller. I, of course, want the after pic :)

Almost always if you want some ab definition its good to get your body fat % down.
Crunches/sit ups are the best workouts you can do to get a flatter stomach. I see that you have back problems, but perhaps you can somehow do the crunches/sit ups to your best ability. That way you can start getting results without putting any pressure on your back.

Heres a video i came across not too long ago (not in english but hey you can follow the images lol) and it has great 8 simple exercises which in your case can be slightly modified (for your back problems) and in no time you should start seeing results.

Complete and utter BS.

Crunches work the underlying muscles, but they don't do anything to remove the fat over the muscles. The only way to get rid of tummy fat is to lose fat all over the body. The way to do that is to eat fewer calories than you take in.

There's really no other way.

read the sentence above that text that you quoted :D

And the only way to lower body fat is not only by consuming fewer calories but increasing cardio. Running/jogging is a great exercise that within time will decrease body fat but will also work on the core

And crunches are STILL not the best exercises to "get a flatter stomach".

Crunches aren't the best exercise for the core either.

I've noticed that when I don't consume bread/flour-based products often my stomach 'deflates'.

Also, sometimes back problems actually stem from weak abdominal muscles (I like working the abs for that reason).

I have to disagree. While you can reduce your body fat % it seems a lot of ppl that dont work to tone the tummy area specifically run into problems. The tummy is a known problem area especially for many women.

I have a pilates dvd that focuses on the abdominals and they have some great exercises on there. Some of them do not involve back movement, but leg movement instead and you can really feel it in your abs. If I find any similar movements on youtube I will post them for you.

The dvd is called Quick Fix Pilates Workout. Not sure where you can find it. I bought it used on eBay. Try eBay or Amazon.

Please read what I wrote again.

CRUNCHES are not the best exercise for the core or abs.

I said nothing about other core exercises, including many of the Pilates type exercises that are part of a good resistance routine.

I never said not to work the core and abs. I said crunches are not the best way to do it.
