How to find out BMI

I am looking to find out my body fat%. i tried that online calculator which was absolutely crap and i asked at my gym and they said they dont have the tools for that lol any ideas how i would find that out?

BMI is NOT the same as body fat. BMI is body mass index, and it does not take into account fat vs. muscle. Purely a weight vs. height compared to some charts created in 1959.

Put simply, a tall anorexic woman will appear 'healthy' on the BMI chart, while a short professional bodybuilder will be morbidly obese despite 4% bodyfat.

If you gym doesn't know how to test bodyfat, well just don't take ANY advice from them since they're utterly un-educated.

Any personal trainer with a 2-day weekend certification will be able to do a 4 point skinfold caliper test on you to get a decent bodyfat percentage.

You can buy a caliper and tape measure set off ebay for like 10 bucks. Then read the instructions and teach your significant other how to measure you. Win/Win

hahaha thanks. thats a brain fart on my behalf although the ppl who work at my gym are complete morons. i asked a friend and she said bmi was body fat....anyways thanks ill look into that lol

If you can find someone who is comfortable doing body fat measurements with the calipers, that is probably your best and most affordable bet. Just make sure you go back to the same person to get re-tested later to minimize testing error.

You could use a scale that estimates body fat, but there is usually a much larger possible error with those. You would have to follow the pre-measurement guidelines very closely and follow the exact same routine every time to get even a somewhat accurate idea of your BF % (same time of day, same # of hours after eating or drinking anything, no caffeine, no alcohol, etc.). Your hydration level drastically affects the readings, so you have to be strict in following the instructions.

If you can, go with the caliper measurements.
