How to curl

So, I just got started with my new work out routine on Friday. I figure if I'm gonna do this, I might as well do it right - so for the first time in my life I actually tried to do the exercises 'right'. As in not cheating, keeping good form etc...

Anyway, I got a question on the barbell curl. The way I did it, I stood up straight, didn't use my back or hips or anything, kept all of my body perfectly still - and just bent my arms at the elbow and brought the weight up (hope that makes sense)

But then I saw this

This guy's elbows are all over the place - first they go back, then the go up - I always thought that was 'bad' - so - is that what I should be doing? Or does it not matter as long as I'm just using my arms and nothing else?

(Sorry for the dumbass questions)

"There's not such thing as a dumb question"....

But yes, you are right, he is doing it incorrectly. To work your biceps more effeciently, you need to keep your elbows as still as possible... There is acutally a device that you can use to help this... Just remember, in order to work a muscle properly, you must move it through it's entire range of motion... That pic is a good example of what happens when there is too much weight...

you are absoloutly right, he his an idiot and remember,
if they have big muscles it doesnt mean that they are smart.
you should look on exercises to see the basics and then decide by what you think and feel what is best for you.
your body will tell if its wrong or correct our body never lie to us.

I'm glad you posted that link to the Dead lift...

cause tomorrow is my 'legs' day and the workout I picked has me doing dead lifts - what's that guy doing wrong so I don't do it wrong too?

yea, you have stiff leg and bent leg.

bent leg is shown in ethan01's post. stiff leg works more hamstrings. you're supposed to keep a slight bend in the knee and lower the bar to about your knees.

Also, I think the best curl is the preacher curl...the one where you are curling inside your theighs. It totally takes your elbows out of the equation

Agreed....the website is generally good, but many of the clips are "iffy"...the form is not always there...they really should make some changes there.

Ethan01, the exercise where you a curling a dumbbell inside the thigh is called a concentratin curl...preacher curls are done on the Larry Scott bench ;)

Another Q

This applies to a lot more than just curls - but I figured I might as well ask here; how long after you curl, or do any exercise should you still be sore?

I did my abs and biceps on Friday, and my arms (especially the lower part of the biceps) are still pretty sore. Is that what I want, not enough, or too much?
