how much to lift

I was talking to a personal trainer at LA Fitness yesterday, he was telling me because of my body, I should lift heavy with low reps. He said most people that are realy overweight should lift light with a lot of reps. He said it would help me get cut more faster, and build my muscle better by doing low reps at a higher weight. What do you guys think?

Hypertrophy (muscle growth) is best acheived in the 6-12 rep range and about 60-80% of your 1RM. 1-5 reps is for strength at 90-100% of your 1RM. Anything over 15 reps is considered endurance. As for the high rep low weight to help you cut isn't all that true, cutting is a matter of decreased caloric intake and increased cardio to lower body fat %.

Good way to put it. It would be wise to go for strength rather than hypertrophy in his case, but the biggest deciding factor is diet.
