how many reps?

Hi,

I am trying to get back into shape. I've been working out on and off since I was 15 or so, 24 now, I've been off for over a year until about 3 months ago I started working out again except I'm a lot more focused on weight loss. I've always been heavy but now I am quite overweight. I've been told that doing only cardio is not good and that I should keep doing weight training. When I was a bit younger I used to do 3 sets of 8-12 reps of whatever exercise I am doing. I've heard from some people to do 15 reps, or to do 4 sets of 10. I'm not really sure what's best, usually if I do 15 reps on my first set, I can only get to about 12 on the second and third set. My main goal is weight loss, my muscles are big enough, so I'm trying to figure out what is the the best combination of sets and reps.
