How long should it take?

Hi Im a newbie here.

I was just wondering if i am eating right and excercising 5 times a week (30 mins cardio and 15 mins weight training). how long should it take for me to start losing weight? i realise that it dosent happen overnight. ive been doing this for 3 weeks now and i keep stagnating at around 90kg going up by 500 grams then back down? could this also be muscle building?

thanks for your help.

Hi there Mparashis,
It's great to hear that you have started exercising. Dont lose faith with what I say, but generally and it does differ for each individual, you need to allow 6-12 weeks to really start seeing results, you've said you have been training for 3 weeks, so keep with it and dont lose motivation, the results should come. Obviously I dont know your routine or diet. In regards to your diet, I have the calculation on my blog to determine how many calories you should be getting each day to maintain your weight and in your case, how many you should have if you are looking to decrease weight, have a look when you get a chance In regards to your routine, I'm not sure if you have time restraints, but cardio is great for losing weight so it's good to hear you're doing a lot of cardio, if you have the time, you should increase your weight training. The more muscle you have on your body, the more efficiently your body and burn fats whilst resting.
Main points - keep going, allow time to see results, check your calorie intake and increase weight training a bit if possible.
=)

It's tough when you don't see results straight away, but stick with it, you'll get there :) Keep up the cardio and the weights :)

Not really an exact science. I say keep away from the scales only that it will prove to be a demotivation factor. I would say weigh yourself maybe once a week at the same time wearing the same clothes.

Now, when you say "How soon" I can never understand. It depends on so many factors. In an unhealthy way, you could lose 5, 10 pounds, but in a healthy fashion, you could lose 1, or 2 pounds per week. However, you will see "large drops" here and there. Like sometimes you will see 1, 2 pounds, then another time 3, 4 pounds, then back to 1, 2 pounds, etc, etc. It's really unpredictable and sometimes you might not lose anything at all. But then again, losing weight really doesn't conclude whether you're doing it in a healthy way or not.

also, while you don't need 90 minutes of lifting weights to get benefits... 15 minutes is a little on the short side. A good workout with some intensity should take 30 to 60 minutes.
