how important is a 'rest day'?

like the subject says, I was wondering if a day off from the normal routine is really important.. I only started running about a week ago as some of you know, and I have been walk/jogging 2 miles each night.

Is it crucial to have that day off for your muscles to rest?

thanks guys,

IMO it's extremely crucial in order to attain progress.

Your muscles grow outside of the gym and that's the time you need to nourish your body appropriately in order to see results.

you'll have to base how many recovery days you take on how your body feels. if you are feeling overly tired, are having bad workouts back to back and are suffering injuries then you will want to take more than 1 day off per week. I only run 3 or 4 days a week and I am training for a marathon. just listen to your body and do as it commands.

I took my rest day on saturday and Last night I got back to my normal routine.. Now my legs are sore as hell.. o well, my body fluctuates all the time so maybe I just had bad timing. :11doh:
