How does this sound

After a two year lay off I am back to training. I was going to just do cardio until I got down to where I want to be before I started weight training again but that got shot down. So I bought a new weight bench today to go with my eliptical.

So here is what I am now thinking (keep in mind that I do plan to change it around from time to time) as a GENERAL way to go -

cardio, weights, cardio, weights, day off, cardio, weights, day off, cardio, weights, cardio, weights, day off, cardio....'til the day I die.

Like I said, as a general idea how does this sound?

Thanks.

Well, it sounds OK...but it's really vague. There are tons of different weights and types of cardio.

Do you have a more specific routine or basic idea of what the weights and cardio would be? Which exercises which day? How many sets and reps? What cardio? How long? What equipment do you have? And what are your goals? etc...

What's your goal?

Is it to gain muscle?
'Cause if it is, you're setting yourself up for overtraining and burning out. You need to have more rest if you want to maintain your energy.
Rest is a key component that a lot of people tend to ignore. Your body needs that.

If it's just to stay in shape, I'd say go light. Don't over-do it. You could still overtrain without enough rest and zap your energy.

Think of energy like a bank. Everytime you workout, you withdraw from that bank. Rest is like deposits. If you workout and don't give time to allow your body to recouperate, you'll go negative. And I can assure you, you will know when that happens. Lack of interest, tiredness, and no energy to do anything.

Think about it

Not too sure what my ultimate goal is but for now getting back into shape is what I am aiming for.

Weights will consist of just about everything there is to do, different days of course and for cardio I use an eliptical. I have been running for 45-60 mins every time I do cardio but I am going to give this HIIT workout a try and see what happens.

I do feel as though I am getting enough rest. I even miss working out on days I do rest.
