How do you all do it under 1 hour?!!!

I've read that when working out, it isn't wise to workout for more than 40 minutes. That should be the max. But I dont know how some of you all can do it so fast! When I workout, it takes at least one to one and a half hour. Sometimes more. I workout 3 different body parts a day. Does resting in between count as your workout time?

Your body begins to produce cortisol after an hour (estimate) of weight training. Cortisol counteracts the effects of testosterone. Typically my weight training program lasts 45minutes to an hour, depending on how fast i go and how may people i talk to :). And then I do 20 minutes of cardio. Try to limit weight training to under an hour; if your routine takes more than an hour you're doing 1 of 2 things: 1. Moving too slowly 2. Doing too much or both.

Post your workout; everyone can have a look and comment on it.

i agee with allen and Adler1983. i rarely go over an hour anymore. get in, get it done and get out. :)

lets see what you're doing on a typical day. :)

Im all business in the gym during my routines. Before, after between strength training and cardio, I can be approached. When Im in the middle of my routine though, I try to block everything out. (Not saying I can do it all the time) My wife has been standing over me for 5 minutes when Im doing lateral raises or dips and I never noticed her until she grabbed my shoulder.

Cortisol or not, for 3 muscles you should be around 45-60 minutes, including rests of no longer than one minute between sets. You mentioned resting: there shouldn't be breaks between each muscle worked. To go longer suggests you're not working out as intensely as needed. You won't be able to do as many sets if you're going to failure.

Focus on increasing the load on the muscle using less sets. Simplify and shorten the work using 8-10 sets per muscle while increasing intensity by going to failure and focusing on lifting more weight using rest-pause, partials and cheats.

Have you thought about working only 2 body parts per day instead of three? Three would take me a long time too.

Jen =)

Thanks for all the great advices and info! Im currently following a workout program from a book I downloaded off the net. It seems really great. The book is free to download at this site:
